krazykungfu Posted November 30, 2010 Just sitting here downing a bowl of the good stuff wondering who else does? None of this "yeah I tried it drunk in Fiji one night blah blah blah"... Anyone else enjoy (or at least tolerate) the unique taste and drink it regularly? It's underrated if you ask me - my theory is the majority of people from Ozzie culture are so used to alcohol and it's easily noticeable effects that they write kava off first for the taste and then for the subtlety... Anyway that's just a rant....who drinks it?
kindness Posted November 30, 2010 I'd drink more of it if I could get hold of more of it! I really like it, tis good stuff!
Alice Posted November 30, 2010 Can't say I drink it regularly unfortunately, given the ridiculous prices these days. Tolerate the taste? Love the taste! my theory is the majority of people from Ozzie culture are so used to alcohol and it's easily noticeable effects that they write kava off first for the taste and then for the subtlety... I agree with that, we are a spoiled bunch.
Auxin Posted November 30, 2010 It took sina years of pestering me but I've enjoyed kava regularly going on three years now. As for the taste I cant say since I havent tried your kava, the taste seems to vary drastically based on source. I got a pound of hawaiian once and that stuff was horrid, whereas my favorite brand of samoan kava (paradisegypsy) doesnt taste at all bitter, or metallic, or otherwise funky when I extract 4 tbsp into 2 cups half water/half milk. I just received a fresh pound and am just barely managing to wait to dive into it until 3 days from now
MORG Posted November 30, 2010 I'd drink it more if it wasn't for the taste. Seems the only stuff I've found in Australia to give effects tastes bitter as all hell.I couldn't swallow the Klin instant. I was lucky enough to drink in the traditional way on Tanna, Vanuatu and after the mastication treatment it tastes just fine and the effects are far from subtle. Will post a report when I finally get a moment to put my brain onto writing and editing it.
WoodDragon Posted November 30, 2010 I tried it twice but the stuff I had did not have any effect beyond numbing my lips, and I certainly had 'enough'. Perhaps it was too old, or from a poor source? It wasn't bitter; it simply tasted like mud. If it had been active, I certainly wouldn't have minded the taste if I'd had the chance for consuming more. No chance of that now though, given the arbitrary government tightening of availability of yet another ethnobotanical.
ThunderIdeal Posted November 30, 2010 i reckon it tastes like soapy dirt water. however, about once a month i get a random hankering while i'm at work or something. i never get that with alcohol unless i've had a beer several days in a row (so hardly ever). however kava hankerings consistently come at me from out of nowhere. you know how it goes, you imagine the taste, and start thinking about how good it would be to have a big cup in your hand, and how nice it will taste on your friendly old tongue
ENtiTY Posted November 30, 2010 Kava is one of my fav plant friends As for the taste... the stronger the kavalactone repulsion the better the kava be. If you aren't getting any effects then you either have something in your system that is counter acting the effects or you need to challenge your gag reflex a bit I'm told kava has an excellent synergy. Teotzlcoatl Posted November 30, 2010 Here in the States "Kava" is totally legal and I just had a pound of the stuff shipped to me! I LOVE KAVA!
krazykungfu Posted November 30, 2010 I was lucky enough to drink in the traditional way on Tanna, Vanuatu and after the mastication treatment it tastes just fine and the effects are far from subtle Thank god somebody else recognises it's true power! I can't wait until I eventually end up back in Fiji drinkin fresh stuff... i reckon it tastes like soapy dirt water. however, about once a month i get a random hankering while i'm at work or something. i never get that with alcohol unless i've had a beer several days in a row (so hardly ever). however kava hankerings consistently come at me from out of nowhere. you know how it goes, you imagine the taste, and start thinking about how good it would be to have a big cup in your hand, and how nice it will taste on your friendly old tongue That's awesome because you admit it tastes like poo and you still want it! That tells you something about how good kava is For anyone interested, make sure you make the mix as strong as possible! as thick as can be... it does reach a saturation point and that's where you want to be, where no more kava will actually release itself from the gooey ball in the cloth (ps it's a fine balancing act because you don't want to waste what is left over in the cloth, you wanna get it all out so add just a touch more water and keep mixing until it's lost it's clay like feel but the mix is still potent!).... Drink that over the course of an afternoon with some light snacks along the way to settle the stomach and you'll happily be in kava land! To all the Ozzies out there we need to start a petition or something on this one, because the law wasn't changed that long ago and it was under a different government - who knows but stupid rules like this make me wanna move to NZ! planthelper Posted November 30, 2010 (edited) I tried it twice but the stuff I had did not have any effect beyond numbing my lips, and I certainly had 'enough'. Perhaps it was too old, or from a poor source? that happend to me aswell the first two times, it's just that your body and brain, has not yet learned to recognise the effects. often some people who never smoked pot and than have there first one, say the same thing. they claim it has no effect, but onlookers would say different. i definately have seen first time kava drinkers, suddenly sitting calmly, but they all said, i can't feel a thing. anyway, i remeber at times feeling still so straight in the head, on kava and thought to myselfe, it's not strong today, but than when i tried, to walk a bit, i noticed that my motion was very drunk like. so just give it more time with kava! i don't think it's a good idea to brew it strong, it's much better, to just drink 2 or 3 times as many cups instead. solomon Posted November 30, 2010 (edited) i really like the taste and how it makes my lips numb.. pretty good brew, i think the stuff over here in supermarkets and the like is pretty weak tho edit: Like plant helper said above, lots of people dismiss many a plant after trying it once.. PhoenixSon Posted December 1, 2010 drunk a crap load of the instant klin gear, seemed to give me an anxiety type of attack and i shouldnt of have any other substances counteracting the kava... just different peoples chemistry plus different kava strains chemotypes
incognito Posted December 1, 2010 drunk a crap load of the instant klin gear, seemed to give me an anxiety type of attack wow, thats odd~ I loved the klin instant! when i get around to it I want to source sme more! I couldnt sit around drinking cup after cup of the raw stuff best thing about klin's is you only need a little, and can be drank in skullable amounts. I found kava it great for socialising and quite the aphrodisiac. Kava sex is the bomb!!
sapito Posted December 1, 2010 drunk a crap load of the instant klin gear, seemed to give me an anxiety type of attack I get this from the instant aswell if i drink too much. Seems more 'speedy' for lack of a better word when compared to normal klin stuff
ThunderIdeal Posted December 1, 2010 (edited) you mean more AWESOME :D ha, hahahhaa (private joke) though i agree, i have become quite the motor mouth using instant Edited December 1, 2010 by ThunderIdeal
krazykungfu Posted December 1, 2010 (edited) I still don't know how this works but sometimes Kava for me is an energising and socialising buzz (energy that can go all the way up to anxiety-ish), yet more often a relaxing, calming thing... And that's within the one strain without changing varieties etc I guess it just levels you somewhat and can take you a bit either way depending on the circumstance... PS never tried instant - you just mix and scull - no straining? Interesting... Edited December 1, 2010 by krazykungfu

Bread Filter Posted December 2, 2010 drunk a crap load of the instant klin gear, seemed to give me an anxiety type of attack and i shouldnt of have any other substances counteracting the kava... just different peoples chemistry plus different kava strains chemotypes And me makes Three. I only had the recommended dose though. A type of anxiety attack is the best way that I can describe the sensations it created. Now to totally contradict my statement the "anxiety sensations" were nothing like a regular anxiety attack.
PhoenixSon Posted December 2, 2010 ye its a strange feeling.... Usually i dont mind a speedy feeling. But this was different.

krazykungfu Posted December 9, 2010 (edited) Klins Instant Kava Didn't know that kinda thing was possible anymore, and I'm going to definitely give it a try... Been goin' to a lot more trouble than that for ages (admittedly getting away with it a lot cheaper though!) A quick tip to anyone in Oz with Kiwi Relo's/Friends - pester 'em to bring it over if they ever visit - especially if they're from the North Island... There's a large enough Islander population to warrant plenty of Kava in NZ... been there many times and brought back much!!! Did all those reporting anxiety attacks drink a higher dosage than recommended by the instructions? It's a freeze dried product not the dried root so you can't treat it the same as drinking a freshly brewed bowl. Never experienced that effect personally but seen it in people who didn't pay heed to personal and package limits. Been lucky to strike gold on some really great waka recently thanks to a close friend, great stuff! Would be lost without kava in the medicine bag for anxiety, muscle pains, insomnia, etc. 2tsp of klin or just 1 cup of fresh kavakava. I do not recommend to mix with alcohol although many people do and don't seem to mind (not a drinker myself).
MORG Posted December 9, 2010 +1 on not mixing with grog. Did that once and felt fantastic that evening but had the most toxic hangover ever. Dizziness, vomiting, aches and my vision was funny, kind of like the world wasn't as 3D as it should be.
sapito Posted December 11, 2010 Did all those reporting anxiety attacks drink a higher dosage than recommended by the instructions? Its definitely more likely to occur if you drink more than the suggested amount but the instant will make me on edge from a 1tsp dose but this is still pretty far from a panic attack. I cant remember what the recommended is.
