Yo Gabba Gabba

Recommended Posts

This is for anyone with kids. Check this show out.... it's all about singing, dancing and listening to music, but the twist is the music is actually really freakin' awesome.

Guests such as Weird Al, Devo, Shiny Toy Guns and Jack Black. Man, my childhood was wasted on Patsy Cline and Romper Room. My little boy loves this show and I gotta say, so do I. I think it's on ABC2 on a Sunday morning, but not sure exact time. Here's the youtube channel link.

and apologies to anyone who thought I was talking about old skool hardcore.

don't like it. It is too fast paced for my liking. There have been studies done into how quickly scenes change and the affect this has on kids... I believe playschool is one that moves slowly enough... check it out next time you are watching different kids tv shows, they should move very slowly between scenes as young children's brains can't process the information that is blasting at them quickly enough.

apparently.

i agree in some regards, read somewhere there is no benifit at all to kids shows before the age of 7...basically instead of thinking the kids are just watching imagery flash...but hey its not going to exactly harm them too much either, gone are the traditionalist days of a kid playing in the local bushland and reading quietly in his/her study room.

kids are just like us adults in many ways as well, whilst i love to be thought provoked by a intelligent documentary, also other times i like to just shut off my brain and get pure entertainment value as self depricating as it is but equally i like to watch regarded brain dead stuff like beauty and the geek, UFC and bear grylls eat bugs. i suppose the kiddy equal to a doco is similar to play school and gabba gabba is like beauty & the geek.

fraggle rock used to be very fast paced, but equally it holds a special place in my childhood memories...for absolutely no reason just because it is as it is...its important not to get too carried away with intelligising kids, thats what they have school for...they also need to just watch brainless stuff and decode sometimes too.

anyway isnt it terrific for kids that they have 2 station totally dedicated to them all day......free too air. assuming of course they get a little bit of sunshine too : )

Yep! My 3yo loves Yo gabba gabba and most of the other shows on the 2 free kids channels

In between racing around the backyard and pulling out my pot plants to take for a ride on her bike its good for her to have a little rest and watch some happy kid shows

Although the Yo gabba gabba show has a bit of a recurring thing about bad *germs* I hope it won't make her OCD !!!!

Wouldnt the fast paced flashing and bright colors have a deeper effect on there subconcious? what other subjects are they disscusing on the show besides germs? now im a little older i can see the subliminal messaging in programs like play school sesame street and even the simpsons. not to say its anything dark and sinister its probably about selling products YO GABBA GABBA talks about germs alot right? bet they have a YO GABBA bathtime range. if a cartoon flashes like a pokie room it cant be good for your wallet.

I read somwhere a while back the teletubies were causing speach impedaments lol

Yo Gabba Gabba turned my son into a germaphobe.

He didn't want to touch anything because it had "tiny yukky germs on it" just like they say on the show. He also wanted to wash his hands all the time. I managed to snap him out of his fear but it wasn't easy.

One time on the show the host said

"Stars are just shiny planets"

I know Venus is a shiny planet and it looks like a star but it took me ages to convince my kids what most stars really are.

Hmmm... haven't come across any germ episodes yet.

From what I could see, the predominant message is that "Listening and dancing to music is awesooome!!!"

We don't watch much tv at home.... the activities I like to get involved in with my son are playing in the garden, playing musical instruments, reading books and getting out to explore new places whenever the chance is there. Sunday morning, we usually put on rage and let him watch a few cartoons/kid shows afterwards. Some of the shows are utter crud and some are really creative.

Yo Gabba Gabba struck a chord with me because music is such an important thing in my life and in our household and I'm regularly disgusted at how many children's shows/toys/CDs are filled with deliberately out-of-tune singing (for what the hell reason I can't figure out... is it meant to be cute?). I respect the fact that simple songs are easy for kids to grasp and there's definitely a place for them, but I've seen in my son that kids can really enjoy a huge variety of music. My son loves dancing to pretty much everything I've exposed him to to, from Latin to Funk to Jazz to Rock to Pop to Electro to Hip-Hop. Yo Gabba Gabba, germs or no germs, is giving kids the benefit of the doubt in terms of musical appreciation and that earns it a huge amount of respect from me.

Kindness, I know what you mean about the pace.... from a learning concepts point of view, I'd imagine that the fast pace would make it harder for kids to absorb information. To be honest, from the eps of Yo Gabba Gabba I've seen there isn't really much in the way of learning concepts in comparison to shows like Playschool. I wouldn't rate this show in that regard, although it brings something different and (IMO) equally important to the table.

Magicdirt.... "Stars are just shiny planets" is a bit grating. I'll pay that.

I'll keep an eye out for the things that have concerned some of you, but I think for us the positives will outweigh the negatives.

Thanks all.

Yeah, not sure how I feel about the night garden. It's pretty weird.

I wouldn't go so far as to call it traumatizing, but there's definitely something creepy about it. Seems to have a hypnotizing effect on kids.

Maybe those random rhymes have some sort of meaning that our minds don't catch but make perfect sense to kids who can't speak properly yet.

dark psy i tells ya!

im not traumatised, more...it makes me feel funny. funny in a weird way.

(and ill jump in ahead and say no, not sexual ;P

i dunno, its just weird. something about the shadowy forest. walking in shadowy forests feels weird(especially pine forests)

and those psychadelic bizzare characters. they are surreal.

word to that incog. We had a small phase of nightgarden here. I really got the shits with the mispronounced words though.. fer fark sake... a telephone is a telephone not a trumbliphone. I don't need to teach my kids twice what the thing is! lolz.

I am also a little bit annoyed that now whenever my kids see pebbles balanced on each other, (something that has been around for a lot longer than makka bloody pakka) the kids think it's a makka pakka house. To me that has either represented balance, or a marker on a hiking trail lol.

Anyhow, yeah, kids shows... Rabal - wasn't having a go mate - i just don't like it. It's not because of the music style or anything! When my youngest was a wee pup one of the easiest ways to get him to have a nap was to crank daft punk's homework up and dance with him in my arms :) he loved it and still does.

peace

The best part of In the Night Garden is the end.

One time I was fed up with having to watch that garbage every day, so I held my hand out like a gun and said "bang" just as Iggle Piggle fell down and it looked like I'd shot him. Everyone cracked up.

It's become a ritual in house to shoot Iggle Piggle every weeknight - the only enjoyable part of the whole show.

Now my kids get disappointed if we don't shoot Iggle Piggle.

What's with that Makka Pakka thing - Childhood idols with OCD just don't sit right with me.

Those Tombly fucken boos always losing their pants seems a bit weird too. Trying to keep pants on toddlers can be hard enough without those fucking things taking their pants off every five minutes.

lolz and upsy daisy is a bit of a skank too... going around kissing everybody and everything.. then the iggle onk, (or whatever its called) cracking a sook cause it didn't get a kiss? Whats up with that? Gender socialisation or what?

Didn't even think it. I didn't create the show, so you couldn't be having a go at me.

You actually raised a few points that I hadn't considered, so as far as I'm concerned your contribution to this thread was all good.

Cheers.

man that yoga farmer show is crazy creepy....

im a closet wiggles fan just quietly. captain feathersword has some skillz lol

apparently he graduated from NIDA in the same class as Hugh Jackman, and helped the wiggles out partime to earn some extra cash, tuning out as a wiggle when one was unable to perform. Now he earns much, much more than Hugh Jackman.

The show where steve irwin appears is an absolute cack.

As far as kids shows i watch with my girl, i kinda dig that Lola and whatshisname (her brother) show.

Its really sweet :P

All the wiggles have got to be rolling in it.

They were a band before they were the wiggles. What was it?... hang on... here we go

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sKxyJsRiC58&feature=related

I actually thought I hated the Wiggles until about about a year ago when a friend bought me and my kid a ticket to the show. I grumbled all the way to the concert and when it finished I grumbled that I had to go home again. It had such a good feel and they all were great showmen. They've all got to be pushing 50 but they were doing acrobatics and dancing and singing and having a ball doing it.

They made the right move going over to kids music.
