Exactly.

I don't see any Acacias is that because they are not in the relatively safe category ?

I have struggled with deciding weather or not to add Acacia for a very long time... it's lack of traditional usage is what made me decide to leave it off the list... but perhaps I should add it?

Anything else I'm missing??

depends how you define traditional usage teotzcoatl, australia's indiginous people have a minimum 40000 year history and were some of if not the most entheogenic users of plants in terms of medicine food ceremony etc, without much research into their usage as a whole i wont make assumptions besides i think it would be quite valid they would have used acacia spp in many ways which qualifies it for traditional usage.

didnt see wormwood on your list?

edit

yes there is wormwood i missed it first time sozinnocent_n.gif

it isn't safe though.

Aaahhh

teotz good old listings...

I wonder what will you do with it when you complete it!

Yeah, I think there are some stuffs you are missing, not plants though [with the exception of dragibus - don't let the latin name here guys for obvious reasons - and then again dragibus is reported to be pretty risky with all its variation and all]....

You have to admit your list is not particularly changed since last time...

first of all there's that safety thing, which is subjective. Any such list without tropane plants is simply wrong but they don't enter your list because they're 'dangerous'. But in your opinion everything in that list is relatively safe.... Which is not true, because all drugs can be dangerous when you not knowing what you're doing, mkay? Plus daturas can be perfectly safe if you know what you're doing, plus they have a very big range of effects for every category of yours...

Second of all, the categories are wrong. You are not doing a list in medicinal flora, this is an arrogant overstatement, if you really did this list it would have to be huge. From what you wrote on top of that category, it seems you're still listing herbs that are medicinal to the psych, sedatives, antidepressants etc, so they're still psychoactive herbs, only of a different class.

Third, the title for your listing does not indicate it has to have been recorded to be used traditionally to be listed. So Acacias and so much more have to enter

fourth, many of the plants you listed belong to more than one category. F.e. Psilocybin mushrooms are both entheogenic, psychedelic, aphrodisiac, antidepressant, f.e. The examples are countless.

fifth, IMO, plants should be classed according to psychoactivity class, because this is essentially what you have been doing: doing a list with psychoactive plants, and it won't become more important if you give it academic names or bias the listings and categories to your worldview. What you're doing is listing psychoactive plants...

so, my suggestion?

Skip

* the safety thing

* the 'must have been used traditionally'

* the general medicinal thing

Title your list psychoactive plants

and categorize them according to class of activity....

That's a list I would love to look at.

But of course now I am projecting my view of plants/drugs/psychoactives into your list. What do you think?

Wonderful advice Mutant, thanks!

What should I refer to those semi-psychoactive plants like Gingko and Ginseng and such if not medicinals?

PD, that's probably because that guy thought I was attacking Toetz and/or he doesn't like me anyways. I think Thunderideal knows who he is :P

Medicinal plants. You can keep the medicinal plants list but with a note that this is no account of a full list, anyhow, making a full list is almost a lifetime's work, not a simple thing.

Mind you, that listings are great means of arranging thoughts, classing items and all, thus allowing us, f.e. to understand the world around us better and/or faster. But a list cannot include all kind of details, actually it cannot include any detail.

So you can choose to class each item according to it's major action, medicinal for those two f.e., or you could make the list more than a list, f.e. for each item with multiple uses, apart from the main action/use you can include a short note with other actions/uses.

Well this of course lifts this projects of yours from simple listing, to advanced listing. Using databases or some software with such features you can do it more advanced and interlinkable.

You can title your project "psychoactive and other interesting plants" so as not limit it to psychoactives, but I think it's important to admit what this is list is not, that is a full list of medicinal plants, but a choice from the lister.

You could also name it "psychoactive plants and a selection of other interesting plants" to include all this approach.

this way you can also include also foods, many of which have medicinal properties like Onion, Garlic, Citrus sp a.o.

In any case mate, this depends on you and what you intend to use this for or what's the goal of this...

some good ideas mutant but teotz probably isn't trying to get an honorary masters degree out of this. it could become more sophisticated following some of your ideas but its a good source of info in it's current form.

- it doesn't specify traditional use, it specifies traditional use OR overt psychoactivity.

- 'known to be relatively safe' that can just be taken with a grain of salt really

does anybody know any effective, psychoactive medicinal plants? there is bound to be more, and i'd suggest traditional use ought not qualify anything for inclusion here since we have a pretty good idea that some traditional plant use was mistaken.

good job teotz.

Hey thanks for the nice comments guys. I appreciate the input.

I just can't believe I can't find anymore overtly psychoactive plants... the only ones I can find are either so observe I don't feel the need to list them or... they are dangerous (like datura).

'known to be relatively safe' that can just be taken with a grain of salt really

Agreed. It's basically just saying I won't include any plants which are known to kill people (like datura).

Irie Teotz,

I just love your lists....in fact that is how I found this site years ago....

I wondering if you shouldn't do a list of plant that you should not fuck with? Likely to mess you up or death!

Just a thought.

overt psychoactivity without traditional use = Argyreia nervosa

I think that this 'safety belt' for dangerous plants is hypocritical, because psychedelics and all kinds of plants can be dangerous too. And daturas don't usually kill people, this is pretty rare, daturas just scare the shit out of people so that it's OK they burry them and demonise as valueable psychoactives.

That is, if you censor the list/info just because you dislike daturas or you want to make a politically correct list [that is you encourage people to use all the other plants which in your opinion are safe] but shy away from the overt psychoactivity of tropane plants, you have no right to protest when governments spread their propaganda on drug laws and lies about drugs or classes drugs unfairly etc.

All in all,

this was a far fetched point, but I suppose it gets through...

"Psychoactive and select neuromodulatory ethnobotanicals"?

Thatd let stuff like ginkgo, ginseng, ashwagandha, st johns wort, etc be in

I just can't believe I can't find anymore overtly psychoactive plants

There are many not in the usual 'legal highs' lists.. Delosperma bosseranum, Magnolia virginiana, Eleangus angustifolia, etc.. it just takes time in the archives.
