Have I been given awful advice?

Question

Hi All,

I have been identifying certain kinds of fungi for a while now, and I am reasonably proficient. Recently I was advised with sincerity and certainty by someone who generally seems more knowledgeable than I am that the following mushrooms are active. He/she claims them to be "gold tops", but certain aspects of these go against everything I have ever known to indicate active shrooms.

Can anyone help me figure out the true identity/nature of these mushrooms?

don't eat, but maybe not bad advice either.

They deff appear to be a blue staining gym to me. See the other gym threads here. I am sure there are better gym peeps out there will respond soon. Make pints for sure!

I repeat. DO NOT EAT!!!!

Sorry off topic I know but incognito, I just noticed you have used the lyrics to one of Mumford and sons songs...just not long discovered them but they are just awesome when in the throws of a shroom generated euphoria. I am so lucky that I live in the bush and I can walk along the ridge at night down to the Burnett river and take in all the stars in all their glory. Mumford is my tune of choice at the moment.....If you like them may I suggest Newton Faulkner, "hand built by robots" nearly as good....sorry again for the hijack mr cmarx...

gold tops usually (always?) refers to cubensis, which those are not.

Where I grew up,(Canberra), we always called Subs gold tops. No one had ever seen cubes.

i dunno they look even a bit wacky for a gymnopilus to me. unless it is just they are young. the texture of the ring and on the stem, and colour of the gills is unusual even for immature gyms i have seen.

something about them makes me think pholiota but i really don't know..
