Movies that changed your life

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys, as you probably know i like movies. And there were some certain movies that kinda changed my life at the time i saw them. Is there anything out there that made you go "shit, I've got to change my whole life now". Movies that made you think and think again about the way you see your life? Death? The Universe? Or maybe all this at the same time?

I for myself have a few movies that had influence on me: Gladiator. Though its a very trivial movie, it impressed me a lot and it was one of the main reasons i decided to become a movie critic. And it changed my whole demeanor in regards to manly charisma.

Another movie that changed my life was "Nightmare on Elm Street" It was the reason i fell in love with the horror genre. "The Godfather 2" changed my life in some certain aspects too. Theres a famous quote that i like very much: "I don't feel I have to wipe everybody out, Tom. Just my enemies!" After all these years, i couldnt forget this quote. And i always think about it when someone treats me really bad. :)

There are a lot more movies that influenced me. Fight Club, Pulp Fiction, Terminator 2 and many more. bye Eg

i will never forget seeing the original star wars movies on the big screen with my sisters when i was a 5 year old child.

filled me with such a sense of wonder.

speaking of movies, can anyone find the clip of the lion getting shot up with tranquilisers on the first 'madagascar' movie? im desperately trying to find it to show my friend. i think its the best tripping scene ive ever seen in a movie, and definately changed the way i view childrens movies!!! so many drug referneces in them its crazy!

Beat me too it! I was going to say Donnie Darko too. One of my favourite movies. It left me feeling blown away afterwards, and does every time.

My all time favourite is Princess Mononoke. An Anime by Hayao Miyazaki. It's a bit more serious compared to his other films. Has a lot of good comments about humans fucking up the world. That we need to get back in touch with nature, etc. But also also has a strong fantasy and out of this world feel to it.

Into the Wild. Directed by Sean Penn. Heaps of people have talked about it on here, so I won't go into the details. My favourite bit was when the quote "Happiness is only real when shared." comes on screen. Brought me to tears.

Blow. Staring Johnnie Depp. There is an awesome contrast between the party side of drugs with the downside. Again, the ending was a tearjerker.

There are heaps of movies for me as well, but that's my two cents.

Akira - I think the ability to focus your mind, energy and spirit, enough to create a universe is mind blowing. Sparked my interest in the power of the mind, reality, parallel (sp) universes etc. But being an angry young man i could relate to a kid thats always been picked on and had people decide for him and then lash out when he had the power of a god. Plus it has the whole sci-fi thing about it. And for some reason this film catches more emotion on the persons face better than live action, and it has all-round amazing fight scenes blah blah. AMAZING!

Taxi Driver - Travis Bickle, the angry young man, loner, cuts sick at the scum who deserve it. Reminds me that even the most overlooked person, seemingly a weirdo who doesn't care can make a difference. The power of one person!!!

Sprited Away - Just an all round beautiful film that i LOVE. Zany, cute, emotional.

The Shining - Sparked my love of the Horror genre and Stan Kuberick.

Trainspotting - Dunno why, but makes me think about where i am in life. How i've changed where i want to be as apposed to where i am. Makes me realise i haven't hit the lowest point in my life.

Great thread EG! Love your work lole.

cheers

i really liked the matrix movies, it's interconnected with the terminator in the same respect with the ultimate theory of a world dominated by and eventually taken over by the end result of human lazyness and commecialism.

even though both plots are far fetched it gave enough mindfodder for one to imagine many dimensions interlocked within a frame of technology, god, evolution and fantasy.

Seven Samurai - I've lost count how many times I have watched this, the greatest!

Fight Club - I know, it's so typical for a middle class male.

Before Sunrise & Before Sunset - :P

Dazed and Confused.

Shawshank Redemption - 'Beaches' for men. :P

Velvet, thats great and nice to know! Atm im wrtiting an article on the work of Peter Thomas. He made the film music for the Edgar Wallace Movies and some other cool vintage stuff.

Nito, those WERE the Druids we were looking for. :-) Classic stuff, man. I must have seen those movies a thousand times.

Yawning Man, this week i was watching THE SHINING and TAXI DRIVER! I love them both but especially TAXI DRIVER! Great rage movie. Yesterday i just decided that i am going to get me the long version of THE SHINING. The european version is pretty disapointing because it has been cut down to 115 minutes which is way too short. It misses many great scenes that i loved in the book. But Jack is unbeliably great! That was one of the best Roles ever!

Stinkmeat, you just made me curious about INTO THE WILD. Sean Penn is pretty awesome in general. Good Charisma.

Dale, man i love Kurosawas films. 7 Samurai is great! I also love John Woos great Heroic Bloodshed films. John woo was influenced by Kurosawa a lot! A BETTER TOMORROW for example. And at the same time that movie had a major influence on the way i see the life too. Check out BULLET IN THE HEAD and THE KILLER.

Yeah and when im reading them i realize that i also love Shawshank Redemption, Matrix and Donnie Darko! And "First Blood". :-)

Fuck yeah! Klaus Kinski and Herzog is the fucking super team - check my fucking avatar!!

......

Films:

Anything by Herzog

Films by Harmony Korine (especially those starring Herzog)

yeah awesome man, klaus kinski, what a fucking man, there is none like him, brilliant! have you read his autobiography? its a great read, but you cant believe it as truth, herzog has talked about how kinski turned up to his house demanding he help him create some stories for it, a statement kinski would deny i suspect hehehe

you have seen his film 'my best fiend' about kinski's and herzogs relationship. great documentary that one, herzog is my favourite director i think, he makes such stimulating films, not only those brilliant ones with kinski but also great films like 'the enigma of kaspar hauser' with bruno S, he is a fascinating character.

they did another too which was the first herzog film i saw, Strosek. great film about a poor man stuck in germany dreaming to lvie in the US and finally gets to go there only to find it is worse than his fucked up life in germany. some great scenes in that film.

i could go on all night about herzog, but i will speak of one more film and go, his documentary, gods angry men.

gods angry men scene

and

and what other filmmaker can make a film with a dancing chicken

strosek

aguire preview

its english dubbed that one but its still kinski, hes one crazy motherfucker, that scene they show in there herzogs talks about how they got that shot, i think they had been out in the forest for a long time and supplies were limited they hadnt eaten proper food for a long time and all were kinda going crazy and they came acorss this empty village and there were all these bananas there and the crew just rushed for them, as they were starving, herzog rolled the cameras and got what was captured, kinski comes storming in and chases of those other actors wanting to eat, he actually hit one poor fulla with the sword you can see it in the film hehehehe mad man ay

i was meant to stop writing ages ago but anyway

when i was at uni years ago now, i studied music composition, for my third year i had to do some performance and i was right into kinski at the time and thought i would take the video footage from aguire and add some orchestral music i had written, i had limited time to work with an orchestra, i think it was a total of 3 hours over 3 days or something and the piece of music i wrote was difficult so the orchestra didnt get it completely the way it was written, but it was recorded so i put the two together.

if you are interested

Velvet, Klaus Kinski was insanely cool! I loved his rants!

Thats Werner Herzog talking about Kinskis rage. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8u0sCCFc0_M

And some of his best insults:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vX-14y6--vM...feature=related (Kinski is telling someone in the Audience to shut the fuck up and stuff. Great comedy!)

Thats an hilarious interview with kinski:

(The woman keeps asking dumb questions and is interupting kinski all the time till he rages.

one more on the set:

He complains about the quality of the food. No real reason for the argument. And then he just rants random stuff like asshole, Ass, do your shit alone. Those indians were totally shocked.

That one is great too. It was on the Jesus Christus Erlöser Tour where he just starts arguing with the audience. Pure gold.

edit: and i forgot the best one. The french one in cannes!

1.V for vendetta

2.The Matrix Trilogy

3.Toxic skies ..... I dislike hollywood/cia psyop movies that brainwash and condition the beliefs and feelings of children. ie; war is fun, governments are the good guys, police are on our side etc...

Requiem For A Dream - Saw it at the cinema, and just sat there like this  for 10 minutes after the credits rolled. Really powerful stuff. Beautifully acted, shot, directed, written... and the score is beyond epic.

It really made me think about what an important role addiction had in my life. I got rid of a few so-called friends after that.

Wouldnt say movies have changed my life but there are some memorable ones for sure, good times...

Bad taste, training day, pusher, mad max1 and 2

Too many european movies to mention, sbs used to play good ones all the time about ten years ago. One i saw on sbs years ago that i have never been able to find, the search all the more difficult as i forgot the name. Fear factory songs featured throughout the movie about how the different paths of ppl intertwine during one evening.I always thought it was a german movie called nightstalkers but fuked if i can find it anywhere.

So many euro movies have been taken and remade by hollywood, the euro versions are allways better tho, vanilla sky is the best example i can think of.

dale seven samurai the anime or rl action? Seven swords was one of the latest retellings with donnie yen in it pritty dam kick ass.

Been watching heaps of Zatoichi lately the originals with Shintaro katsu nothing like a blind gambling yakuza anti hero to make ya feel better about yourself  but inherently its about love, life/death, friendship.

Akira is one of my favs the animations in it are so dam epic and all hand drawn, amazing skill and hard to find in anime these days

Also, I recently downloaded and watched the 'Tarantino cut' of True Romance.

Someone out there re-edited the movie going by Tarantino's original script, so it's got Tarantino's signature mixed up chronology, extended scenes, and most importantly, a completely different ending. Highly recommended.
