zed240
Did another batch of sowing yesterday. Did these slightly differently so I will be interested to gauge the results. For this batch I used the soil mix I make up for more mature trichocereus but I microwaved it very thoroughly and then filled the pots leaving some room on top. I then used about 12mm or 1/2 an inch of propagating sand on top of the soil and then sowed the seeds on top of the sand. I'm hoping as they get a bit older their roots should reach the soil as they start to need some more nutrients.T Pach Monstrose X pachanoiPachanoi X T Pach MonstroseT Pach Monstrose X T pallarensisT pallarensis X T Pach MonstroseT Pach Monstrose X T peru Serra BlueT peru Serra Blue X T pach MonstroseT chalaensis X T pach MonstroseT huancoensisT huancabambaPsycho0 X YowieYowie X BBs ScopGonna get some more going in the next few days too!

I'm hoping as they get a bit older their roots should reach the soil as they start to need some more nutrients. That sounds like a good logical idea Zed, and having the two batches only a week apart should give a pretty fair comparison. The only issue I can see might be the possibility of dissolved nutrients percolating up into the sand before they are needed. I will be very interested to see if there is a significant advantage in a few months.
upside
^^ I gave that idea a go with a cupl takeaway teks. Found it worked quite well compared to just sand. It's how I'm doing all my germinations now. Look forward to your results Zed.
zed240
Yeah, I'm pretty keen to see how the seeds perform in each of the soil mixes. I will update on their progress in future. As you can probably see I have a number of seeds from the same batch, (Psycho0 X Yowie and Yowie X Scop and TPM X Pach), sown in each of the mixes so should be able to accurately gauge the difference. I also counted out every single seed and recorded how many were sowed of each so can work out the ratio of how many germinate and survive in each soil mix, etc.I was also happy to use the Psycho0 X Yowie and Yowie X Scop as the controls as I know they are super fresh as I collected them myself. I'm glad to hear you've previously had good results with the "sand on top of soil" tek, Upside.

upside
My thinking was exactly the same as yours Zed. Allow them to sprout on plain sand and as their roots develop they have some nutrients to take up with the soil mix underneath before I start to open the lid and harden them off. I found some doubled the growth rate compared to those only in sand.
zed240
Hey zed.Just out of curiosity, where'd ya get all those TPM crosses?Sacred Succulents - http://sacredsucculents.com/ (a couple of the varieties I got weren't on their seed list but a person on Facebook Trich group mentioned they may have other varieties so I asked and they said they could do a couple of types that weren't on their standard list) I ended up having to get US cash to send over in the mail to them as they don't take credit cards or pretty much any other form of payment. Apparently I couldn't do an international bank cheque either as they need more personal details of the person receiving it than I had as I was trying to send it to a company, same sort of roadblocks with trying to send a money order, the bank told me they wouldn't even do international money orders! So long story short, Get US cash and send it via standard mail over to them with their printed out order form filled out with what you want. They will label the seed packets as if they were varieties of trichocereus that are explicitly allowed to be imported in to Australia, (if anyone opened the pack it would have looked like I was going to sow 20 different varieties of chilensis and pasacana!), and then they will email through a legend so you can work out which seeds are which ones you actually ordered. All in all, apart from having to muck around with US cash and posting it over, the service was excellent and Ben answers emails promptly and is helpful. I would order from them again in future for sure. I was a bit disappointed they only sent me 18 seeds of T Pach Monstrose X T peru Serra Blue though. Since it's suppsed to be a 25-70 pack it was pretty disappointing. But some other packs have pretty good amounts in them which sort of makes up for it in a way. I was super happy to be able to get all those TPM crosses at all to be honest. Still wishing I got hold of any of the magical Nitrogen seeds from 2012, but I've already had some of the TPM X Pach from 11/03 germinate, so that's a good thing.
