How to score cheap cactus cuts & seeds etc

Recommended Posts

Ingredients:

  • A ute
  • Various garden and chopping type tools
  • an ABN
  • Some sort of clue about cacti.

Instructions:

  1. Locating yourself somewhere that there are lot of cacti will obviously help.
  2. Register your business name eg: Yeti's Cactus Removal and Maintenance Service.
  3. Take out classified ad, letter box drop (even selectively if you are a bit clever) etc.
  4. Wait - be patient.
  5. Collect minimal fees (to cover costs) as people pay you to prune or remove their columnar monsters.
  6. Spread the love amongst your fellow SABsters

that's actually not a bad idea... you could even put it in the ad that you'll do it for free, and just sit back and wait for someone to ring you. And only go out when you want cacti, it wouldn't be like a job..

i'm sure there are plenty of people inheriting deceased estates that absolutely hate the giant Trichocereus in their front yard..

except that u would have a tonne of cereus cacti that u couldnt give away and would have to pay to dump. i know, ive been stuck with a SHITLOAD of cereus that i couldnt sell or give away from previous garden jobs. and its not the most fun work taking those bstids down. its like taking down a tree. a spikey one. Unless u got to pick and choose. Though a whoe stand of bridg every now and then would make it all worthwhile.(and profitable)

You could buy one as a business car :D

I'm sure that if you were an investor of sorts you could write off the losses such as business cars, gardening supplies etc, as tax deductions, and since you are doing it all for free you can't write off tax on that so you might be able to offset against other income...I'm probably totally wrong though...

Sounds like a cool idea though.

Peace

somehow i dont think u would get much business.

good idea though, if u were gonna do it as a business id incorporate other pruning as well, lawns , hedges etc. but 'Specialise' in removing cacti.

what i do think would be a good business however is installing cacti and succulent gardens.

with water restrictions etc i think thered be a marketfor it.

That is a very good point. At first I thought how good an idea it was for your area, but the area of action should be wider, I fully agree.

However, if you wanted to be competitive you coldn't possibly remove cacti with your hands only, a good machine would be necessary. Still it sounds like a prety plausible business. Good idea, really. Not all good ideas work out, but if this one doesn't work out you will probably have another good idea. I really appreciate the creative mind,

cheers mate!

Jono is rite, not a great deal of business to be had.

I have scored some nice cacti under the guise of "removal/maintenance", the only problem lies with the hundreds of cacti you end up with. Yeh you can sell them but when you have a few hundred lil echinopsis and the like takin up space in your backyard you soon lose motivation and start to loathe them. You do come across the odd pach or bridge that needs a good haircut but realistically you would end up removing more opuntia, agaves and cereus than anything.

still, there is of course, nothing like free pedro mmmmmmmmmmmm
