Changing server soon

Recommended Posts

There is nothing wrong with the server we are on, but the recent server hack has shown me that it is just too much work to try and recover all websites at the same time. And as we were runnign out of space anyway, I decided to move the shaman-australis.com domain to a new server. This new server will be with the same company, but it will be in a different city. So, most reasons for downtime will be split between the two - ie it is unlikely for both of them to go down at the same time.

The advantages will be that we won't be suffering from processing overloads anymore [the forum is incredibly resource hungry] and that the australian-ethnobotany forums will not be on the same server as the SAB forums and hence won't go down at the same time as us. Also, some of my email addresses should continue to work no matter what, which will create less panic with customers and forum members when things go wrong.

The move should be relatively painless. We are moving between compatible software system and the move is done by tech support. There may be some minor downtime due to DNS propagation through the system, but this is unavoidable. I will close the forums before the move and when they reopen we will be on the new server.

WHEN? Not sure yet. I need to schedule it so it is convenient for me and for tech support. Probably in the next 2 weeks sometime. As I mentioned, you will see a 'closed for maintenance' screen for a few hours and then when it is back it will all be over. The closing is required so that no posts get made between copying and going live as these would be lost.

I thought I'd post a warning early so as to avoid a flood of panicky emails :P

Where/ what city/country are the servers located?

Washington and Chicago. Why?

Washington and Chicago. Why?

just interested, from a legal perspective which state/country would have the most favourable freedom of information laws or whether that even matters...

I'm pretty sure that the host location has nothing to do with the legal issues where the information is downloaded (see: DOW JONES & CO INC v GUTNICK)

Host location DOES have some bearing on legal issues, but from a different angle. My choice of that server is because it is good, reliable, affordable, and not in Oz.

The Russians and Chinese will soon have primitive moon bases in the near future.

Casinos and internet servers will be able to licenses such options.

As outside of legal earth laws.

The great whore the U.S.A.,

after the credit disaster of 2008 never recovers its global stature.

As selling all asset.

How else.

is there really such thing as a "primitive" moon base? if anyone can make a base up there then ild hardly call it primitive lol.

Anyway, how about eastern europe? might be safer on the side of legal issues then in the usa, but security wouldent be the best.

Thanks for giving us a heads up too.

No, we haven't moved yet. Last night's downtime was due to a failed forum software upgrade. All fixed now.

Looks to me as though the upgrade may have resulted in the disappearance of the Corroboree page header and replaced it with an INVISION POWER BOARD page header.

I'm already starting to miss the old header.

And the links to profiles are down.

Cheers

thanks. please keep reporting any problems you encounter.

Do not report wrong images or colour/style problems as these get done separately.

OK, we've moved. Sorry it took so long, but things did not go smoothly.

Keep in mind that some folks might not be able to see us in the new location for another day or so.

please post here if you find anything that doesn't work.

We are now on a brand spanking new node with latest hardware and software. We are using 11Gb and have another 9Gb to spare. This should last us for a few weeks

The Corroboree is now on a separate server [and different datacentre in a different city] to the SAB store and to the AE forums so that the situation that arose last month with both forums and all emails down should not happen again [unless the data company goes bust]

I was searching for the results of an old poll I posted in 2005 , seems the thread is there but not the survey (or what i really wanted to find was the results) ? I haven't tried to search for old servey results before so this may have been gone for a while.
