apothecary Posted May 7, 2008 http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2008/05/06/2237157.htm Speeding drivers in south China are getting clear away thanks to machines which switch the numbers on their licence plates in seconds. "More than 50 per cent of cars caught on camera for speeding and other offences either cover up their plates or use a fake licence plate," a traffic policeman in the Guangdong city of Yangjiang was quoted by the Beijing Youth Daily as saying. "Our chances of capturing them is next to nil." The price of the remote-control device starts at about $A120 while a more advanced apparatus with the ability to flip over the numbers in less than three seconds costs more than double. "The era of covering up the licence plate by hand has passed," a driver surnamed Zheng told the newspaper. "It's really convenient and economical too," a salesman who specialises in such devices in the provincial capital of Guangzhou was quoted as saying. In April, Xinhua news agency reported that China had confiscated thousands of fake military vehicles and number plates in a move to crack down on citizens masquerading as privileged members of the the People's Liberation Army. In years past, Chinese counterfeiters have used fake military vehicles to ship bootleg cigarettes and other goods, previous reports have said.
Avaricial Posted May 7, 2008 Read that this morning. First thing that went through my head was "Wow, where can I get me one of those" Now, if only i could electrify my car windshield wipers to shock parking inspectors when they try to give me a ticket.. Fenris Posted May 7, 2008 Didn't James Bond's aquatic Lotus sport a switching number plate? When do I get my super magnetic laser watch?
ThunderIdeal Posted May 7, 2008 getting away with speeding is the least of it really. you could get away with murder, etc. problem is that if you are randomly pulled over, you are in big shit if the cop notices. on the other hand, you might have been able to flee without them seeing your real number plate. MindExpansion Posted May 7, 2008 I agree with thunderideal, you get pulled over and you are GONE lol. get away? shit, the cop cars over here are faster than most of the cars on the road, you'd have to be lucky to pull that one off. Would be nice to get past those fixed camera's. Interesting but oh well, i think ill save the 120 and just drive the limit lol. Peace, Mind
jasemateau Posted May 7, 2008 its kind of hilarious this subject. because even tho we in australia have a massive proplem with police just trying to meet qouta, handing out speeding fines for even being 2kmph over, although i do agree witht the fines for being over 15ks up in dense residential, and where you might find heavy pedestrian and children activity (50-60 zones) but formost the drivers doing under the limit in open freeways should be penalized for frustrating people who have long distances to cover. now i china most and mean most of the cameras are stationary, no surprise blue boy jump out of the bushes. the general population can NOT drive, its total chaos on the streets, and the cops are the in now place to enfoce the road rules as they forget them also, and by no means do i mean they can get away with it coz they are cops, they just dont know how to drive!!!!! try to imagine just one day in you driveing life where not 1 single person put on a indicator................... drives in the middle of 2 lanes......, now imagine 20 cars all doing the same thing on the smae road......... try to imagine a round about that has 3 or 4 lanes, but not one citizen knows how the use the outer lanes, meaning they cut accorss 2or 3 lanes before they get into the "motion lane" of the round about then cutting across another 2 lanes with out indicating your going in or out....................... i tell you some parts of china is nothing short of a nightmare to drive in........ so to have a device that flips you number plate is kind of ironic because not single person knows all the road rules, i'm sure you would be lucky to have half the rules of a road know by 100 people collectively......... it makes some sense in AU, becuase the reason for speeding fines is blatent robbery, in most circumstances. not to mention many other taxes. id be more interested in the colour saturation one of our female forum members was posting about some time ago... ThunderIdeal Posted May 7, 2008 any such trick is gonna land you in shit if you're caught. you can put a panel over the number plate which makes it completely visible to the cop driving behind you, but blocks the view from the sides so that roadside cameras can't see it. i've also heard that if it's sprayed with hairspray, the flash on the camera causes glare and they can't read the plate.
