apothecary Posted February 23, 2008 Hey guys, Came in to work today hoping I could nap all day long, unfortunately I can't now because I'm so fucking excited... I got an email from Google this morning asking if I was interested in working for them! OMG?! Would I move to America? I haven't even finished my degree? Should I finish my degree? Farrout... Talk to me people.
ENtiTY Posted February 23, 2008 Whatcha studying S? Sounds perdy cool, what would you be doing for them?
apothecary Posted February 23, 2008 Studying Computer Science. I'd be a UNIX Systems Administrator. Probably Linux.
ThunderIdeal Posted February 23, 2008 sounds like you'll be maintaining their fifty million linux-driven 386's and shit haha sounds alright, pity you've gotta work for an evil corporation but don't we all? good luck
apothecary Posted February 23, 2008 (edited) I already work for a fuck-off evil corporation run by the Murdoch crew. Google is easily the least evil NYSE listed company I've ever seen (and I spend a lot of time perusing NYSE). Hehe TI, I dunno if I'll be maintaining their server farm, from the sounds of the email looks like they want me to set something up from scratch or run a development lab or something. Phone interview setup for next Tuesday (or next Monday PST). Edited February 23, 2008 by Sina
ThunderIdeal Posted February 23, 2008 this puts you in an excellent position to become a cyber-terrorist (if you aren't already). i look forward to searching for donkey porn only to find myself reading about the bhagavad-gita.
Vertmorpheus Posted February 23, 2008 well done Sina...but does this mean you have to talk google now? Say someone asks you a question about rivea you just say things like "i can run you thru the great deals on rivea at ebay?" or "did you mean riviera?" or perhaps "rivea river riverider riverina...." Or do you just say "well i have 3.4 billions pieces of information about that, do you want to just skip the first 2.2 billion on the basis of being dodgy vendors and half arsed reports from people living in anything but subtropical climates and get straight to the big words?" congrats! maybe when you get to the US they can make you an "alien on parole"... has anice ring to it VM
hebrew Posted February 23, 2008 hehehe VM thats pretty funny sina, good stuff man of course they would be looking to you, your fuckin intelligent, and you know a bucket load about unix linux man if i was in a position to hire people for the job i would come knocking on your door too you got the skills why not go for it. let us know how you go with your interview do you have to move to the US i imagine the pay would be good man if you do that you may not have to work till your 65 like some poor bastards. would be cool if you could do it all from aus. but man even if you have to go to the US how exciting for you. what an opportunity
ThunderIdeal Posted February 23, 2008 for real. good IT's only have to work until they're about 24. bastards.
Fenris Posted February 23, 2008 Take the money and run The google HQ is near San Jose in Cal, San Jose is a really nice spot your only 45 min away from San Fran, the beach is maybe 30 min away and during winter you can drive up into the mountains, maybe 60- min away and go snow boarding. I really enjoyed Cal when I was there, its like Perth only better (no sarcasm please), there is loads of space and the earth seems really fertile for growing anything. You could go to burning man no problems, or get loaded and drive to Vegas, its a 10 hr drive (when you live in Perth a 10 hour drive is not even half way to Broome). The only strange thing about San Jose was that it didn't seem to have a city centre, lots of small hubs but the nearest city was San Fran. What an awesome opportunity. what's the worst thing that could happen, you don't like it and you come back to Aus to work.
incognito Posted February 23, 2008 take the money while ur young and set urself up man..well done sina!
XipeTotec Posted February 23, 2008 I think they may actually want you to work in marketing.... the UTFSE campaign that you have put into place on these forums, has increased its use 10 fold

nothinghead Posted February 23, 2008 I hear they have pool tables IN THE OFFICE Like Newman says "When you control the mail, you control....... Information!" Seriously though, could there be a more exciting job in IT than working for those who basically index knowledge? I say go for it!
Torsten Posted February 23, 2008 why hesitate? you've been whining about wanting to travel and do 'something new' for as long as I've known you and here is your chance. Fuck your degree, you can always finish that later [if you still need/want to]. Good luck with the interview! Did they seek you out or did you apply? if the former then you're set. Undergrounder Posted February 23, 2008 Where are you studying your degree? I was doing Computer Science at Sydney until i realised it sucked so i switched to Psychology.
~shameless~ Posted February 23, 2008 Google employee's are treated well- i read somewhere- regular appraisals and bonus scheme, for sydney site I wish i could take it on!
chilli Posted February 24, 2008 Jeez man, if it's got you that excited, sounds like you don't need to think about it too much... I suppose if you have a serious partner or kids you might need to weigh a few things up, but sounds like a once in a lifetime opportunity that maybe you'd be dumb to miss... if it doesn't work out maybe Torsten will start his own evil corporation (if indeed this isn't it) and pay you in beans and a solar powered company car, or just lovely, evil mammon. Mind you it sounds like hell boring work to me, but so does anything that doesn't let me work when I want, or more literally not work at all, in my boxers whilst constantly stoned. apothecary Posted February 25, 2008 Whenever the Sydney offices were opening up originally (about two years ago?), they sent me some sort of listed email (probably from job sites) asking for expressions of interest. I sent one in of course but they said I was unsuitable without a degree. I told them this time I still don't have my degree they asked for a phone interview anyway. When I said something new T, I meant like, being a poppy farmer in Cambodia or something
