CHILLI BURNS

Recommended Posts

have been doing some xmas cooking today, making some chilli sauce...minced over a kilo of diff varieties, finishing with habanero...about 1/2 hour later my hands are on fire, and it only seems to be getting worse.

I've tried milk, oils, hand creams, vaseline, acidified water, ice, cold water...the last two giving temporary relief only...

i should have worn gloves, and thankfully i didn't scratch myself...but jaysus, two hours later and it hurts like hell.

any suggestions? If not, how long will this last?

This is interesting*, as my partner experienced this just last week (for the first time, despite having worked with chilli's for years). Sadly, we tried all manner of remedies including a 10 minute milk-soak, olive oil, grapeseed oil, and aloe vera gel (albeit a non-pure brand) were tried over a 30 hour period. The only short term relief was from papaya gel, but alas that too only seemed to work for a couple of hours.

*Note, I say this is interesting not because you are in discomfort, but that it might be a particular frankenfood strain on the market right now (our experience was in Sydney) with some intense level of capsaicin. Tell me, did your mash include bird's eye or some other small thai fruits perhance?

yes, I have also worked with chilli for donkeys and never once had a reaction like this.

could very well be

I had four varieties...a big pile of sweet banana chili, then long mild ones, a pile of cayenne and then a smaller pile of habanero. In between mincing these finely with a big chefs knife, i also grated and minced a whole heap of ginger, gartic, lemon peel and lemongrass. I'm not sure if these other ingredients maybe contributed in some way.

the burn didnt start till i went to wash up...as soon as I got hot water on my hands it seemed to activate the chilli...my hands are cold to touch, but pink and very very sore.

30 hours did you say? oh lord

Thats a bugger jina, do'nt realy know, maybe orange juice? capsaicin (is that it?) is an oil is'nt it? & I think they use O.J for oil spills.

Maybe not?.... maybe I just want u to soak in O.J?......

Taken from the net:

"If you do burn yourself with the chilli, treat the burn as you would any other burn. Run it under cold water and dress it with a baking powder paste or a burn ointment."

This reminds me of a little story...a painful little story. I was 11 or so and my mother's friend said she'd give us $1 if we could eat one of these chillies and chew on it at least three times. I love chilli and took her up on the offer. It was HOT! Soon afterwards I went to the toilet to urinate and didn't wash my hands beforehand. Now I was *really* feeling the pain! Still I get get a whole dollar!

LOL, thanks Ned. By the way, your parcel is ready to roll, just have to remember to stick it in the postbox

Wandjina, the fact that you didn't use the same type of chilli as my girlfriend would likely remove the frankenfood theory per earlier speculation, non? Therefore then we might lead towards a synergy of ingredients that disagree with the skin. Coincidentally, she was also making sauce, as you were What we can omit from the equation (comparing to her instance) is lemongrass and ginger - but remain focused on the garlic and the citrus (hers had lime, if I recall, and definitely garlic).

Once the sensation goes down, would you be willing to repeat the experiment on yourself within some defined variables as suggested above ?

C'mon, it's in the name of kitchen science

well i dont have a solution but i have another girl who wants one!

my gf started getting chili burn about 2 months ago, never used to happen. it usually flares up later that night a few hours after preparation, but more worryingly the next day too. at first we weren't sure what was even causing it, no burn remedy gave relief and she described it like an 'inner nerve burning'

after a while we worked out that it was when she used some particular soaps the next day it was causing the burn to return. i think you might be right on with the synergy theory 0skorei. the hand soap was lemon myrtle based and the dishwashing detergent contained citrus extracts

Heehee, I remember when I was about 21 this great hulking tough guy was round at my house while I was cooking, and he saw me chopping chillis and started going on about how much he loved chilli, but I got the impression he was full of crap, or had never eaten really hot chilli so I said I bet you won't eat one of these and he popped it in his mouth, looking a bit apprehensive.... ZOOM! It was hilarious and rewarding to see such a big toughie frantically waving his hands whilst saying "ooh ooh ooh" as he raced to the sink to splash water all over his mouth!

try getting deepheat on ur scrotum in front of a 1800 strong crowd of people.(not a good idea to have ur hammys rubbed down with deepheat unless u are wearing underpants, and alas this day, i was wearing boxers (i was terrified of getting 'ball cancer'; from wearing undies, and just used to play in boxers with the legs taped down, however , the deepheat made its way under the tape this time, somehow, in a tackle maybee)

not a nice memory and one id say that is looked back on with great sadistic humour by the 1800 strong crowd of people.

i dunno how hot 'deepheat' is in regard to chillis, but my privates where in a lot of excruciating pain for around 2 hrs , with lingering effects of seven hours. my dad and old footy coach wouldnt take me to the hospital cos they were to embarresed, so i just sat with an icepack between my legs for 4 hrsstraight. oh thats what helped...baby powder...lots of it, and nurofen.

to late now i guess, ur prolly all better.

Oh you just had to mention scrotum didn't you Jono? I have an amusing story about the time I tore open my scrotum, but it is best told in person All I'll say is that I was wearing short shorts, no underwear and had my first major hit of good drugs at the hospital and even then it was excruciating! If anyone wants to see the cross I bear on my balls(it is a cross shaped scar) well youll just have to get to know me better
