Police say they have arrested a large number of people for the possession and supply of drugs at this years Homebake music festival at Sydney's Domain.

Superintendent Ken Finch says there has been a highly visible police force at today's festival but would not say how many people had been arrested.

He says with the assistance of sniffer dogs police found a variety of drugs.

"There have been a number of detections for varying types of drugs - MDMA, cocaine, LSD [and] cannabis," he said.

"A number of people have been arrested and will be proceeded against."

Stop Homebake drug sniffer dogs: Greens

7th December 2007, 20:16 WST

Drug sniffer dogs should not be used by police at Saturday's Homebake music festival in Sydney, NSW Greens MP Lee Rhiannon says.

The Greens will be handing out "Sniff Off!" stickers to revellers at the Domain concert tomorrow, where the usual contingent of police sniffer dogs are expected.

Ms Rhiannon said she wanted government resources redirected to catching the "Mr Bigs" of the drug world.

"It's the big drug manufacturers and dealers who need sniffing out, not young people stepping out to enjoy a day of music with their friends," she said in a statement.

"The Greens will be at Homebake to support concert-goers and offer information about their rights."

Ms Rhiannon said the NSW ombudsman had found no evidence that sniffer dogs disrupted low level drug dealing, had a deterrent effect on drug users or reduced drug-related crime.

The sniffer dogs could be put to better use, she said.

"In north Queensland, sniffer dogs have been used to find truffles in rainforests for the betton, a small marsupial whose population is threatened by land clearing," she said.
