Customs seizes steroids, smashes smuggling rings

The Australian Customs Service says it has smashed several criminal networks involved in the smuggling of steroids, human growth hormones and other performance-enhancing drugs.

During raids in New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, the Northern Territory and the ACT, Customs seized 1,300 shipments of performance- and image-enhancing drugs, wrapping up an operation that began in October last year.

Officers seized 90,000 tablets and 60,000 capsules, and charged 29 people.

Customs says the hauls highlight the high demand for steroids in Australia.

Customs national investigations manager Richard Janeczko says on average officers stopped five shipments from being smuggled into the country on every day of the nine-month operation.

He says the investigations will continue and more charges are expected to be laid.

"These drugs are dangerous and you shouldn't bring them in and we're on the border waiting to detect them and then we'll investigate," he said.

"We actually executed a large number of warrants this week.

"In fact we did 47 search and seizure warrants, including Queensland, New South Wales, ACT, Victoria, South Australia and the Northern Territory."
