Vertmorpheus Posted May 1, 2007 (edited) Well sometimes plants go a little weird... pumpkins that try to fruit upside down, tomatos that look like arses etc. Once I had a run of sunflowers that would get up to a dozen 1 inch blooms all over them despite being from standard russian giant seed... I usually put these things down to kelp mix and rampant elf activity. But why is this D.stramonium flowering at 4 or 5 inches tall with barely mature leaves? It was in a celltray (10 cells, each about 40mm square and 50mm deep) in coco and sand, a little feeding with kelp mix and I went to put them up into pots and saw this... these beans are from a kind soul out there in sabland, I don't think he'd have a russian seed irradiator but then maybe he might These are flower pods starting right? anyone else's do this? shruman Posted May 1, 2007 "I don't think he'd have a russian seed irradiator" I dont think he does either "These are flower pods starting right?" Sure look like it to me. "But why is this D.stramonium flowering at 4 or 5 inches tall with barely mature leaves?" Good question, Ive seen mature flowering stramonium that were only just over a foot b4, but they had popped up just as the rest were flowering & finishing there life cycle, it mayb shortening hours of light telling them to flower or decrease in temps or some other signal telling them winters coming & there life cycle will end shortly so make seeds while they can, just thoughts. MORG Posted May 1, 2007 Yeah, mine did that too. I think it's what you call a weed. I was really attracted to these plants until I planted one at my Dad's house. In 3 months she went from the size of the one in your picture to this monster: So I think it's not rare for Datura, a genus whose philosophy must be live fast, die young. planthelper Posted May 1, 2007 all plants grow according to conditions, specialy the solani, and on top of this, it's most likely the short photoperiode which triggered her flowering so early. what is said here reminds me of a datura i spotted a long time ago at a bordercrossing in hungary, which was a true bonsai datura, with small leaves and miniature flowers (flower size of a quater of the normal size), brought on by, lack of nutrients, water, warmth and daylength. your plant realised it's getting winter time, so it quickly rushes to produce some seeds, so as to make sure it's next generation is garantied. Conan Troutman Posted May 2, 2007 I know that tomato growers will generally leave potted plants to become root bound so to induce flowering before they are planted out into the ground...
-YT- Posted May 2, 2007 Little Bonsai Stram i had few months ago in flower
Vertmorpheus Posted May 2, 2007 Didn't realise they gave that much of a toss about photoperiods, never noticed other solanaceae thingies caring much for it , but they were verrrry slightly rootbound, might be enough stress for a weedy variety to start poppin out petals eh? Long as mine isn't the only mutant, that's the main thing. And maybe its a kazekhistani seed irradiator niiiiiice ah? I find planting tomato's fairly densely speeds up flowering abit for the rootbinding reason (shoulda thought of that but didn't think the stram was so sensitive to it), a lot of my toms are self sown from whole fruit so I might have 20 1 foot plants in a square foot or so, just a mass of foliage holding itself up with clumps of fruit caught up in it...makes watering easy but tends to encourage wilt virus etc. cheers guys GD
shruman Posted May 2, 2007 Okay ok u got me but it was a tajikistan seed irradiator

Vertmorpheus Posted May 3, 2007 (edited) And how do you know its my hand? Maybe I rented an anonymous hand just for scale? Well spotted though, the nearest CIB is suffering a great loss Yes, mainly its because I spend a lot of time stuffing about with dirt, mix, plant, rocks, gravel and sand, tools etc, often wearing gloves so if they get too long they just get ripped (which growing very strongly hurts a fair bit) so I keep em behind the line so to speak. I usually keep a thumbnail or two longer than that for stripping leaves off cuts etc. But overly long nails in a shale rich area is a pain in the bum. Also having claws like the wolfman tends to make cetain other people kinda uncomfortable in certain situations (dont make me provide helpful diagrams). Of course to start with it was a matter of being deeply, deeply bored as kiddlywink and kinda trimming them down with the nails on my other hand outof habit... but now its to my advantage! Shoulda called it "bonsai fingernails" eh? Might be an idea not to save seed from those too prone to this, as it's a bit of a pain in the bum. I had a nice big pot earmarked for em and everything.Start em up in spring next time, might get to look like a plant before carrying on like that.Know they're meant to be perennial, but might shit its pants and fall over after straining to bloom and seed at that height? Might deflower her and bring her inside , hey that sounds a little scary doesnt it. Bloody european plants. My yarrow only grows if I alternately swear at it , neglect it, and then flood it. Sooks. take care guys GD Edited May 3, 2007 by greendreams
shruman Posted May 4, 2007 "Know they're meant to be perennial" I didnt know that i thought they were an anual down here they only grow as an anual.
Vertmorpheus Posted May 4, 2007 "....Although Datura stramonium has an annual or short perennial life cycle, the seeds can..." bit of hunting around suggest she's either annual or shortlived perennial, probably as ya said has a bit to do with just how wintery your winter is. At any rate, there's some largeish ones in pics floating around so it's not as tho they typically just flower and die, unless they wait to get massive before they flower at all. Dunno, more of a brug person really lol. Seems colder areas tend to have it listed as annual or SLP though. MIght be some strains or variants more prone to this or that growth pattern. Guest Øskorei Posted May 4, 2007 You have very short fingernails. They're quite lady-like. Looks like he also waxes them Young Tripper, that's an interesting photo, in that it appears the immature plant is flowering smaller than typically expected. I have an amazingly healthy young specimen that I'm almost expecting to push something out before winter sets in. No signs, but a hunch. Will post pics if it performs. Vertmorpheus Posted May 4, 2007 Now I'm just kind of curious as to how you wax your hands? maybe someone with a more ...hirsute ethnic background can help me out here. Plenty of hair on my head if that helps anyone? Though you know what they say about bald men...they say "look, that blokes going bald! hahaha!" Anyway, the odd bit of forge work takes care of excess hand and forearm hair, no need for wax stay crazy GD
Guest Øskorei Posted May 4, 2007 Why, my dear GreenDreams, would you ask 'how' ? Quite simply one would smear the hot substance over ones extremities, desert-striking some serious follicle collateral damage, resulting in a smooth as babies-bottom finger skin. Perhaps the question might have been "Why" and not "how". The "How" is the easy part. Are you a hand-model-stunt-man for porno movies ? I have a a good mate of 'hirsute ethnic background' (SerboXCro) who was a competition swimmer in his youth, and shaved his arms at the time in the teen-logic frame of mind that it would create less drag. Now the fucker, at 32, needs to keep shaving them, or he'll end up with a full fur not unlike a misty gorilla. Sad but true. Dude, forge work ? Do you work in a foundry.. that's such cool old school industrial age career. I thought you were a car mechanic...

Benzito Posted May 6, 2007 Yeah, Datura will flower whenever the season calls for it, almost regardless of size. I think MORG got it right; "It's a weed". I reckon seeds from this plant would flower , it is just that encoded to replicate at rabbit-pace.
Vertmorpheus Posted May 6, 2007 Well bein a weed is one thing, but bummer about that is she's growing in both the right place, and where I want her to be, so she can't be Certainly promiscuous little lady though. But thinkin if I reject seed from all but this one, and the last one to flower, I should have early prone seed for next warm season and later flowering seed for later starts or more southerly areas. Maybe. Hard to be sure. Those pods are still ripening up though, and she certainly stinks in that charming kinda way. Haveto do battle with spidermites later, pyrethrum genocide, how peaceful. Anyone had any cracks at cross pollination with metel around here? Thinkingof proposing to my double purple, but I'm not sure where the ring would go.Or about a few other matters. But we'd work those out in time And no I'm not a hand model for porn movies , though that'd be a good earner and I could do it mostly sitting down. I just lucked in as far as non-bearlike genetics goes. Which is a pity, because women really love guys with weird tufts of back pubes and fuzzy ape like knuckles, dicks with sideburns etc I have a goat-soulspot combo, hair past my shoulders and don't shave quite as often as I should, if that helps you any? I also have fairly hairy toes, for any hobbit fetishists out there, but being 6 foot plus would spoil the fantasy I reckon. Not the supercar green, though I do drive a v6 holden. Hardly a guzzler, unless I'm having One of Those Weeks and driving accordingly haha. have a good long weekend guys GD
