zee_werp Posted December 24, 2006 I first visited this collection about 3 years ago when I heard about it through a friend. Today I was in the area again and I happened to see the house in the window of the real estate office, its up for sale. So I decided to go check it out before it gets bought out by someone else (these cacti might even get cut down when the new owners come in, who knows). Anyway, it's a pretty impressive thing, with many hundreds of San Pedros each multiple meters tall. The owner also grows the Tequila Agave's and other cacti. Unfortunatley he lost his leg a while back and so hasn't been able to maintain the cacti as well as he would like so they're goin' a little yellow. Still pretty nice though. Evil Genius Posted December 24, 2006 (edited) Guys, i really lack the words to describe what i think about this place. This is unbelievable. I want another climate, really. I absolutely have to have such a garden. That´s awesome. I´m not used seeing cacti that big just standing in the landscape. I would travel the country in order to get new cuttings everyday! bye EG Edited December 24, 2006 by Evil Genius

faslimy Posted December 24, 2006 damn.. they obviously knew what they wanted in their garden, must be a good clone. Just shows you really how growing in pots is childs play. Get a cut of that bridgesii looking thing? thx for the pics
zee_werp Posted December 24, 2006 (edited) It's listed at NZ$370,000...comes with a nice house, a 2nd small 'hut' house, and land...its actually a real good deal compared to other stuff on offer around that area...and thats not even taking the cacti into consideration! And no faslimy I didn't get a cutting cause when I showed up I told the guy I just wanted pics not cuttings as it was xmas eve and he had family round and stuff. Might go back and grab one though if I can, it looks to be a nice clone. And it's got flower buds on it. Proves that bridgesii has actually been in NZ for at least 10 years probably more. I estimate there to be easily 1000 meters of cactus here, probably a lot more (just look at the 4th pic across for example...each of those is around 3 meters tall, and thats just one row of them) Edited December 24, 2006 by zee_werp
gusto Posted December 24, 2006 Looks like paradise! Yeah, I'm salivating over that bridgesoid looking plant in the last photo too. I'd wager heavily on that one being a desireable form. By all means, try to get back and arrange to collect a few mature fruits off that beauty.
strangebrew Posted December 25, 2006 Is most of it Juul's? Actually that looks pretty close to something I was thinking about the other day - a pedro/succulent maze, and if I was living in fire prone areas of Australia I would seriously consider having a succulent garden like that around my house. Thanks for the photo's.
egad Posted December 25, 2006 Lovely photos! Amazing garden!  I too hope to have a garden this rediculous one day! Massive inspiration, cheers for posting! Love & Light Always.
Benzito Posted December 25, 2006  Man! If I were you, I would let the owner and the real-estate agent know that you will BUY the cactii if the new owner wants to remove them. If they have someone willing to do the work, they may let you have them for free!

SaBReT00tH Posted December 27, 2006 WOW!!!!! How did that guy propagate such a mass of fully tall cacti??
zee_werp Posted December 27, 2006 Just the conventional way...cuttings + time. I think he said the bulk of the plants came from 2 original mother plants.
Birdman Posted December 27, 2006 Amazing. Just gorgeous!
SaBReT00tH Posted December 27, 2006 speaking of tequila agave propagation anyone know what age they put out pups? I'm propagating a tequila and Pulque agave at the moment, n can't wait for pups so I can spread it round to people.
