A Cessnock woman was given a relacement bag for hers that had been damaged at sydney airport. She took the bag home and found the plastic explosives and handed it in to Cessnock police. The police shit themselves and evacuated the police station until the explosives had been dealt with (I'm assuming by the bomb squad or some other brigade of rambos that deal with bombs) The official reason given by the airport commander was that the explosives had been left behind after a training excercise. I understand there is a need for sniffer dogs to be trained to detect such things but why the fuck was this being carried out in a public space frequented by thousands of people each day? A statement from commander Buchorn said “Although the travelling public was not in danger at any time, we regularly review our processes in this area, and we will do again in the light of this incident" If the public was never in any danger why were the police at Cessnock so worried that they evacuated the police station when they realised what it was ? Either the airport commander is seriously downplaying this incident or the police at Cessnock are a pack of nancies. I tend to lean towards the first suggestion, if there are unsecured explosives around then it has to be considered a serious incident and the appropriate precautions need to be taken -ie evacuation and calling the bomb squad. Any police officer who didn't deal with it that way would be operating well outside of their own guidelines. If a 230 block of plastic explosives can just be forgotten and left in a public place it makes you wonder what they deem as being important enough to care about.
