  1. Just a few photos. Found on the outskirts of Manang, at around 3600 m At Tilicho Base Camp at around 4200 m. Small plants in the fresh snow at high altitude, at around 4800m, outside of Gokyo. As above. It was difficult to tell whether the yak was grazing on the Ephedra itself, or only the grass around it. Not the most palatable of plants.
  2. From the album: MeanGreen's Ethnobotanical Garden

The seeds were pretty old, bought almost a year ago. I soaked them in water for about 48h, changing the water a few times.
  3. From the album: MeanGreen's Ethnobotanical Garden

Finally managed to get some E. fragilis that Sagi sent me to germinate, I just treated them like cactus seeds they were under 99% humidity during germination. I think the other times I let the substrate dry out too much. You can see one has already sprouted while another one is just breaking ground.
  4. Hi, I was looking through my seeds and just noticed that a while back i bought some gerardiana seeds. I totally forgot. Anyway, now i have a heat mat and a better collection of sands and materials for propagation and making soils. So, what kind of environment and soil and moisture should i use to get the best possible germination rate? I cant find any seeds anywhere else anymore, so this is my last chance to grow this plant. in case your wondering im not planning on growing it for its ephridrine, i just like growing medicinal and semilegal plants for novelty, but i know i dont have to explain myself here. Anyway, can anyone please help me out?
  5. Hi, I tested two species of ephedra in simple infusion made using something like this: I dont know english name.... "plunger infusionator"?? Used volumen of ephedra stem powder was more or less one cup of coffee in both bioassays. I drank two pots like above, using the same powder for extracting all "substance" of quantity used. Similar way as argentine mate. The species tested was E. fragilis and E. distachya (It could be major but I am not sure of ID). http://www.floraiberica.es/floraiberica/texto/pdfs/01_031_01_Ephedra.pdf E. fragilis was no active and I was able to sleep without any problem. One month later I tested E. dystachia /major. Definitely this specie was active. I felt my heart flapping and I was not able to sleep at night. I haversted both in October. I hope you find my short report interesting ;).
  6. I have just acquired a bunch of rare ephedras. Unfortunately they were very exxie to get, and my financial situation is not the best at the moment, so I'm going to have to put some up for sale - I've never accepted money for a trade before, feel kind of dirty . 25% of all gross money will go to Jim's Kiva drive, maybe that will help. All are $20 per pack including postage. Ephedra sinica 15 9 bags of 20x seed available Ephedra fragilis 15 10 bags of 20x seed available Ephedra distachya GONE (you can try offering me one a trade) Ephedra equisetina 10 6 bags of 5x seed available Ephedra intermedia 10 5 bags of 5x available Of course if I owe you a favour and you are interested in any of the above let me know. High end (legal) trades are of interest, PM me. cheers guys -ef
  7. I wanted to show off some Ephedra as I'm at home for a few days and had access to a camera. They were sown just over 2 years ago, good germ rates, not too much dampening off etc etc. Species sown were E. nebrodensis (think this might be considered E. major), E. nevadensis and E. fragilis. Anyone with experience cultivating these, have your plants flowered? What age did this occur at and did they have any particular special treatment. E. fragilis E. nebrodensis Lost label for this one, assume its E. fragilis or E. nebrodensis as there were more of them than the E. nevadensis.. but then the growth habit of this one is much more compact and less sprawling.. (edit) sorry for a couple of the pics quality i should have taken more but it's hard to capture something like Eph. in an image.
  8. Until recently, I was under the impression that only two Ephedra species occurred in India. As it turns out, there are potentially 11 species, though this is debatable. A paper published from 2010 (titled "Two New Species of Ephedra (Ephedraceae) from the Western Himalayan Region") described two new species of Ephedra found in India, E. kardangensis and E. khurikensis. I've attached the article below for those interested in reading it. Furthermore, it makes reference to a third recently described species. E. sumlingensis, though I'm unable to access the original publication, it being a chapter in a book (Bulletin of the Botanical Survey of India, Vol. 50, Nos. 1- 4). When I first read this, I was both excited and surprised. The last time I was in India, I found two Ephedra species myself (E. gerardiana and E. regeliana) in an area not far from where these putative new species have been found. In fact, I even passed through one of the areas. So this new information got me thinking. When I next go back, I definitely plan of seeking out some of the other reported species. Two New Species of Ephedra (Ephedraceae) from the Western Himalayan Region.pdf Upon further reading, it became apparent that these newly described species may not be new species at all. The IUCN Red List recognises both E. kardangensis and E. khurikensis as separate species, but classifies E. sumlingensis as a synonym of E. intermedia. However, Kakiuchi et al. (2011), using DNA sequences of the nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer region (nr ITS1), found E. intermedia to be polyphyletic, stating: Sharma et al. (2010), the authors of the newly described species, argue that they are morphologically distinct from E. intermedia: Obviously at this stage, it is impossible to tell who is correct and whether the newly described species from India deserve specific status of not. It does appear likely that as least some of the populations attributed to E. intermedia may in fact be separate species. 9. Hey y'all - Firstly, I know I have 25 odd PMs to reply to, some which have been waiting for a week or two. It's been a hectic time so my apologies, but for the sake of the freshness of these seeds I need to get this post out. I have just landed a bunch of seeds from a range of sources, most have cost me $ but some were kindly donated by planthelper (these are to give away). So... woo me, make offers for trade here preferably or by PM. Those I have promised seed in advance to will get first priority obviously, and those of you who have been promised first dibs - you know who you are and I have a few more seeds set aside for you. Freebies from planthelper, these will go to people who trade other things preferably but any left over I'll send out for free: Heimia salicifolia x 1000+ Mimosa hostilis x 20 Psychotria viridis very fresh berries (2 seeds each) x 20 Anadenanthera colubrina var 'cebil' x 15 Seeds to trade (preferred) or sell: Pau d'Arco (Tabebuia impetiginosa) x 5 Passionflower Official (Passiflora incarnata) x 10 Skullcap - Baical x 20 Skullcap - Barbat x 20 Skullcap - Official x 20 Chamomile German (Matricaria recutita) x 400 Comfrey True (Symphytum officinale var patens) x 5 Tulsi Vana (Ocimum gratissimum) x 20 Lettuce Wild (Lactuca virosa) x 80 Stevia (Stevia rebaudiana) x 20 Krishna Tulsi x 25 Rama Tulsi x 25 Kapoor Tulsi x 25 Withania somnifera (Ashwagandha African Type) x 10 Arnica chamissonis x 30 Belladonna Official (Atropa belladonna) x 50 Anadenanthera sp. Thanks for your patience.
  10. Hey guys, I have 6x packs of 5 each Ephedra nevadensis and Ephedra viridis (10 seeds per winner). These are some of the easier ephedras to get started growing (relatively!). Post here if you're interested; entries close 8pm Sat QLD time (a long way away I know, but there's not much point posting them until Monday anyway). Six winners will get Ephedra packs, and... all entrants will get a mystery seed pack! EDIT: Saturday 4pm - One entrant will now also get 3x E. sinica seed, also chosen at random. edit: looks like this will be a big one. quantum_reality has kindly offered to throw in stamps and i'll be matching him on them up to a total of at least 60, after that i'll have to ask for SSAEs (but I'd rather keep things free). could all entrants please PM me with their postal addresses after posting, so i can start preparing envelopes in advance. use the message subject "giveaway 2013-1".
  11. Hi guys, Been a while since I've been on these forums. I have some Ephedra gerardiana seedstock that I'm having trouble germinating, I know they come from a good stock, a member here sold them to me and I had a few in my backyard for about 2 years. I recently pulled out the baggie of seed and... waiting... waiting.... nothing germinating. I hope the viability doesn't go down with age? Theyre only about 2 years old? I have tried putting them between moist cloth, still nothing. I have some GA3, I might give it a try. Should I score or sinter the seed? I had literally no problems when I first got them, now I'm devestated :-( the new PE crap doesnt work anywhere near as good as a tea, Thanks! tripsis? are you there?
  12. ¡Hola! Has anyone got any amazing germination teks for E. equisetina and E. intermedia? My penpal Pablo is having issues, we've both searched far and wide (including UTFSE) for more information but none of the teks seem to work for him. He's tried all sorts, from GA3, to cold stratification, to temperature swings, to freezing, to scarification, to warm incubation, and come up three quarters of fuck all really. The seeds are from three different sources; we both suspect (and have read) that perhaps the seeds have some very strong germination inhibitors and may only start popping up in around 12 months time. Apart from that, we're stumped. ¡Gracias amigos!
