My condolences brother. Jane sounds like she was a beautiful person. Hopefully she went peacefully and the rest of the family stays strong in these tough times. T.E.

2 id's and some snaps from a cactus garden
TheExplorer replied to quarterflesh's question in Cactus & Succulent Identification
Yeah it was the bird cages. And I only looked at that thread a little while ago, it's not like I remembered it from 2008, haha. Probably just the dry weather of late. A few good soaks would plump it back up. Does Bruce take visitors mate? Or was it just a chance meeting that you guys had? I was thinking of heading down to VIC some time to check out some of the older gardens and I'd love to have a closer look at his. EDIT: Spelling. -

^ It might already be named... it looks like 'Tipz' macro to me, but then again I always mix up the peru/roseii/macro clones from VIC. And given the age of the guy's collection and his location, I am guessing that some of his trichos are from the old gardens around VIC. The 6th last picture looks a lot like 'Super Pedro', and the 7th last picture looks a lot like 'Psycho0'. Oh and I knew I had seen that bridgesii somewhere before (I either have a photographic memory or I'm a massive Tricho nerd... I'm leaning towards the latter): http://forum.auscactiforum.net/t248-another-one-is-it-t-bridgesii . You can compare the growth between 2008 and now. -
Thanks for posting fixmycom/R.Simpson. If you don't mind me asking, what was the outcome of your case? i.e. Gaol time/probation/etc.

Silly cat. I've seen quite a few pictures and news stories of cats on cactus. This one was one of my favourites:

Moving to Sydney: advice?, goodbye, and Sydney vs. Melbourne poll
TheExplorer replied to Francois le Danque's topic in Chill Space
Yeah, weekly. If you go to Gumtree and put in the Area (Inner Sydney->Newtown or Marrickville->Any of the suburbs) and then Category (Real estate->Flatshare & Houseshare) you will find the most relevant options for you. The last example is on the lower end of what you will find, and cheaper properties like that are often shared via word of mouth amongst friends. There are Sydney meets from time-to-time. I haven't been to any proper forum meets yet, as full-time uni and work usually get in the way, but I have met up with plenty of members for a beer or to exchange plants. There are also a few of us who go to doofs, so I see other forum members fairly regularly.- 16 replies

TheExplorer replied to Francois le Danque's topic in Chill Space
Congrats mate! For less than $180 you have very few options, especially if you want to live close to uni. You can get a room in a share house around the inner-west for that price, but you may have to look around before you find one with a yard and decent housemates. I have friends that live around those parts, so their living situations may give you some idea as to pricing: * Opposite Sydney Uni in a split level two bedroom apartment with a small balcony - $500 * Four bedroom (closer to 3.5) house in Enmore, no yard (10 mins walk to Sydney Uni) - $900 * Small one bedroom apartment in Annandale with small balcony (10 mins walk to Sydney Uni) - $350 * Four person sharehouse in Marrickville with a small yard (Bit further away from the uni) - $150each Check gumtree if you haven't yet. Basically Sydney is ridiculously overpriced. EDIT: Oh and it's a landlord's market, and as a student you may have some troubles getting the place you want. The areas around Sydney Uni are desirable and there are a lot of cashed-up yuppies who are generally chosen before students. Some of my mates have had to compete with 10+ people for places and didn't receive them even after offering 3 months up front and/or higher rent. A few of these guys had limited/no rental history, but that should give you some idea of how competitive it can be. The affluent suburbs are mainly around East Sydney (Double Bay/Vaucluse/etc.), North Sydney (Neutral Bay/Mosman/Lane Cove/Hunters Hill/etc.) and further North (Wahroonga/Turramurra/Killara/etc.). There's also obviously other rich suburbs around Sydney, but the ones above are generally the ones that would be considered megarich wanker areas. Anyways, the times are changing now and there is money spreading all over Sydney. Basically anywhere aound the inner-west. Newtown/Enmore used to be more bohemian/alternative, but over the years the population of hipsters has increased significantly. Hipster activity is also fairly high in Glebe/Alexandria/Surry Hills/Paddington. The working class suburbs are generally around West-Sydney and SW-Sydney. Cronulla is actually more upper-middle class, it just has a lot of bogans. I used to go to the Cross a fair bit when I was younger, but now it has changed and I can't stand it (I'll admit I have changed a bit as well). Newtown or Oxford St are better places for going out in the city IMO. Darling Harbour is overpriced and mainly a suit sort of crowd. The Rocks is much the same, but has a few good restaurants. George St has nothing going for it. Getting out of the city and going to a nice doof > all of the above options . Anyways, good luck mate. There are a fair few members around these parts who can help you out if you need anything else. p.s. RE the plants: I can't help with growing as I don't know enough about the climate in Victoria, but I would say it's pretty similar. And I'm not aware of any differences in terms of the law.- 16 replies

I'm sure we can sort something out mate (provided my ID is correct of course). -

Trichocereus scopulicola seedlings (or at least a hybrid with scop in it). -
There used to be pill testing booths at some raves (Enlighten was one of the groups that provided these), but they were eventually all shut down. EDIT: Spelling.
-
There are only four species of Myrtillocactus and none of them have spines like that. The areoles and spination do look a little weird, but it is Trichocereus bridgesii imo. I also find the curving between the ribs to be pretty common for some forms of T.B., especially when younger. Oh and Paradisia is known to grow T.B., and I'm pretty sure there is even a clone going around with the same namesake (or at least a few members here refer to some of their plants using that name). Here's a few examples of some similar specimens that are definitely T.B.: BR&R FR101 My guess is that it is a fairly unique specimen that has come from a large batch of seed.

Yeah I get that ad on mine as well. I don't think it's a coincidence.

Looks like a nice Ecuadorian pachanoi to me. -
http://www.gumtree.c...move/1009720783# Looks like a beautiful specimen. Pretty good price too.
-
Bump. Anyone going to check it out? I wanna see some close up pics...
-
http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/aldinga-beach/other-stuff-for-sale/various-cactus-cacti-for-sale/1007625708 Looks like there is a Tricho or two here, maybe even something worthy of a group buy. I really want to know what the beast in the middle is but the owner can't provide pictures as he is away from the property.
-
I'm glad someone went and checked it out! I really thought the big one in the middle might have been a scop due to the size and shape... Sounds like you got a pretty good deal though mate. And that cutting on the right looks crazy, I don't think I've ever seen a cactus go from 4/5 ribs to 8/9 ribs almost instantly. Anyways, I'll PM you about that offer. Edit: Oh and it doesn't look like Bruce or Eileen to me, but it does look like another clone from VIC/SA that grows extremely fat and goes semi-monstrose. May not be the same one but it looks very familiar. I'll post pics when I am back on my comp.

Sacred cacti health care for newbies
TheExplorer replied to Savage Gardener's topic in Cacti & Succulents
In my opinion: 1. The top one (cuzco/knuthianus) looks like it has some scarring from rot in the past or something else. The small black spot should just heal. The speckly white stuff is scale. I wouldn't spray with pyrethrum though, most Trichos hate it and it could cause more problems. I usually just scrub the scale off with a toothbrush. 2. The second one (pach/scop) looks OK to me. Maybe a bit pale and spotty from excessive sun or something, but otherwise fine. 3. The TBM also looks fine to me, just a bit of scarring from some past wounds.- 20 replies

Nice. The big crest sounds awesome, I'll ask to see it next time.
-
Yeah I should really get organised. Have you been to RS before mate?
-
Definitely thinking about it. Haven't got tickets yet though.
-
Just sharing the love . Did you end up grabbing them?
-
Ah fair enough, I didn't go in there this time. Sounds a bit expensive anyways...
-
Damn, I didn't. How big was it? I got there right on 4 and didn't want to hold him up, so I asked what peru crests he had in and he only showed me to the little ones. I even asked if he had any more Trichos in stock before I left and he said no .
