EGA 10th Bday Raffle - Online Ticket Sales Close Today!
TheExplorer replied to alkatrope's topic in News & Notices
I am also curious... Also how many draws were there? -
Predominant cultivar. I'd also say they all look PC, but there are a few non-PC clones around Australia that look very similar.

Is my penis pointing the right way?
TheExplorer replied to ☽Ţ ҉ĥϋηϠ₡яღ☯ॐ€ðяئॐ♡Pϟiℓℴϟℴ's topic in Cacti & Succulents
Three main ways to check: 1. Areoles/spines - not always perfect but definitely an indicator, especially with certain clones and species. 2. Core thickness - again, not perfect, but more often than not the thicker end is the bottom. 3. New growth marks - pretty obvious on most glacous plants, the arrow points to the bottom. You can see them on your bridge. It's the right way up. -

Whoa, that's a solid effort by everyone. Best raffle I've ever seen. When do online raffle ticket sales finish? -
Hi guys, I know a few people here use kiva and I was hoping to learn a bit more about it. Mainly: - Does the listed default rate match your personal experience? - Is there any advantage to being part of a group? - Anything else I should be aware of? Thanks.

Cool here today, although yesterday was 41 degrees. Hard to get a lot done in that sort of heat. And it's not even summer yet...

They don't look too bad. Just keep an eye on them. 30cm is a bit high, but they don't look like they are stretching. If you'd like some more seeds to experiment with PM me your address and I'll send some out for you .

The soil mix sounds fine, and for future reference you needn't bother with perlite and sand for seedlings. They might have suffered damage when you gave them too much sun though. Also, I personally wouldn't recommend egg cartons as they turn to mush with too much water and can grow mold and such. Do you have any seeds left? I would recommend using plastic containers or seedling cells in the humidifier under the fluoro lights you have (16 hours is good), or just the good ol' takeaway tek without the humidifier. Takeaway tek is easier and you don't need to worry about humidity as you leave the container closed. If it's cold, use the heat mat. If you're in Australia it won't be necessary at this time of year.

Trichocereus pollen wanted - seeds, payment or pollen offered in return
TheExplorer replied to zed240's topic in Wanted
I can send you some scop pollen but I don't think they will be flowering till December. Should be roughly around the same time as those smaller buds on your plant, so maybe we can organise something down the track. -
PM sent.

*HELP* USA and abroad majestic animals urgently need YOU!
TheExplorer replied to brooa's topic in Chill Space
A cattle dog that has not been socialised or trained properly is not an animal that should be given to just anyone, especially if they have young children or other pets. I do hope they find homes though.- 1 reply

Pachycereus marginatus.
-
Damn, I know that feeling. Those cheap greenhouses only work when you put a lot of time into reinforcing them.
-
She'll be right mate.
-
Oh man, that sucks. Was that from the wind? Did the whole greenhouse rip off the base?
-
I'd love a #2 pack please mate. Pm sent.

Which side of the house should my cacti be on?
TheExplorer replied to Nailthesnail's topic in Cacti & Succulents
I always put my plants on the North side with a bit of shade during the early afternoon. If you have any large trees in your backyard you can work with them so that your plants get full sun to midday and then filtered light / part shade during the afternoon. I get a good balance of growth, limited sunburn and glaucousness on most of my plants. Having said that, I live in an area with brutal summers, so your situation might allow for full sun all day. As for your cuttings, it's hard to know what they will do. IME: Some root in a few weeks and take off; some just sit there and take forever to root and don't show any growth till the following season; and some split their energy between rooting and growing and start to etiolate. They can be funny sometimes. -
Maybe Golden Cayenne. "Also known as Yellow Cayenne, the Golden Cayenne peppers are hot, between 30,000 and 50,000 Scoville units. Compared to the 5,000-8,000 Scoville units of a Jalapeno pepper, the Golden Cayenne pepper packs some heat" http://www.specialtyproduce.com/produce/Golden_Cayenne_Chile_Peppers_9781.php#sthash.n17lXeYy.dpuf

Any guesses on this trichocereus?
TheExplorer replied to terraferma's question in Cactus & Succulent Identification
I have a lot of similar plants and I always bounce between cuzcoensis and peruvianus. I don't know what to label them as, but in my head I consider them to be an intermediate between the two. -
Thelionema caespitosum (tufted blue lily) would be up there. Hydrangeas can also be pretty blue in acidic soil or with the right additives.

help identify this cactus
TheExplorer replied to LB84's question in Cactus & Succulent Identification
Cereus sp. -
Trichos don't really need anything special, so you could get away with just a couple cubic metres of cheap soil and maybe a quarter or half ton of scoria/gravel for soil structure/drainage. You can then add other stuff if you wish, e.g. manure, compost, charcoal, slow-release fertiliser, etc.

What is the best way to Trim a cactus?
TheExplorer replied to Bert&Ernie's topic in Cacti & Succulents
If I'm chopping down or taking a cutting from a large spikey plant I usually wrap a towel around the cutting, twist the two ends together, and hold on to that while I saw the cutting with a decent garden saw (or whatever I have at my disposal). Heavy cuttings may still swing a bit so you have to be careful. Another option for heavy or dangerous plants (e.g. psycho0, cuzcos, etc.) is to saw through the core but leave a few cms of flesh, drop the saw so you have both hands free, and then just snap the cutting off. After that you can clean the two ends up and you're good to go.
