  1. Not sure of the ethical implications, but I think about others all the time. Sometimes I have to think of really old/decrepit or enormously fat chicks to keep from busting too quickly... More to the point... I think fantasizing about others when you're in the throws isn't a big deal unless you are calling your parter the wrong name or telling them after the fact "oh by the way, I was thinkin about defiling your best friend's ass, what do you think about that?" There are always those "open" relationships where partners are ok with seeing (sexing) other people. I imagine fantasizing about others in this case wouldn't be a big deal at all. Like Rabelias, I wouldn't fantasize about banging a close friend's partner though... just seems to be inviting jealousy and make things weird. I'd be more inclined to fantasizing about my partner's friend LOL or some chick from years ago I banged with the perfect tits/ass/legs/head/whatever or maybe just that hot chick never got down with

How to choose seedlings to graft?

Great point! I've done the same thing with the tiny runty looking seedlings... they always seem to die off on me and I'm not sure if I could graft it successfully. But really, like you said, without the extra help (of grafting) they will probably just die anyway. I've got about a dozen or so that are tiny compared to the rest of the batch, and one that is very dark purplish . Time to sharpen the x-acto blades

Fired after falsely accused of theft

I wrote a statement of fact that explicitly declared that I was a whistle blower. This document was read by the chlorine manager 5 minutes before she calle me back to terminate me. My attorney assures me that since this was the first time I explicitly stated my whistle blowing involvement was immediately followed by termination (within 10 minutes). Although I am sure they knew it was me all along, since I was the only employee who squaked about the hazardous work conditions to begin with, I couldn't prove that they knew anything at all about me being a whistle blower. Evidently my attorney seemed really disappointed with my case until I told him this bit of info Yes, I've witnessed plenty of cavalier dirty politics played by this company. And yes, I knew that if I filed the OSHA complaint, they would try everything in their power to terminate me. I'm just glad I'm on record stating my whistleblowing before termination. Also, Santiago, you may be right about the framing. The maintenance manager who got screwed by the OSHA complaint was the one who "found the tools missing" to begin with. (not the same one who caused the accident, but also took the fall for the complaint) They have been shady before by basically fired an entire department of underlings after their supervisor was replaced, and never had good reason for each termination. I've got another job as a contractor with a more legit company and also work for myself contracting. This seems like a nice push to get me out of such a negative environment and into a more positive on. Ultimately, I would whistle blow against them again any day of the week. Just wish I remembered to drink syrup of ipacac before I went in to the final meeting and projectile vomit all over them

Fired after falsely accused of theft

Thanks for the replies EG and El presidente Hillbillios! Just talked to a local attorney who represents mostly employers in labor law. He said that since I declared that I was in fact the OSHA whistle blower in writing just minutes before they talked to me to terminate me AND the woman who caused the accident in the first place that I reported was the same one who made the decision to terminate me, I have a fairly strong case against them, and her specifically. He also recalled a case where he was representing an employer who was charged by OSHA with discrimination against an employee. Ultimately the company he was representing went under because the cost of legal hearings fighting OSHA were insurmountable. I didn't sign the resignation because I didn't steal this equipment and would rather be terminated with dignity than resign as a coward. Plus I think it shows that if I really needed the money bad enough to steal that equipment from them (which if sold would be less money than the extra two weeks pay they offered me anyway) I would have taken the resignation option. Yea, I was not charged by the police, so think I've got a good case for whistle blower discrimination. My state is an "at will" state which means my employment can be terminated at any time, for any reason... but somehow still allows recourse for whistle blower discrimination in the civil courts as well as administratively through OSHA. No idea how that's supposed to work in practice

    Mystery Selenicereus

Thanks for posting the pics Jox! That thin new growth looks exactly like the little cuttings I got. Guess its kinda like how baby looking growth in trichos looks pretty similar across the genus. I'll have to wait until they are rooted with healthy growth before making a proper ID!
  6. So, I got these pencil thin cuttings from "Bob Smoley's Garden World" labeled as "Selenicereus Hamatus". There are a few problems with this identification: 1) S. Hamatus is supposed to be around 2 cm thick, the cuttings I got were pencil thin, which is probably due to cutting from a sickly mother plant 2) S. Hamatus is supposed to have conical tuberles between the areoles the cuttings I got have no tubercles, which also may be due to cutting from a sickly mother plant. 3) S. Hamatus is supposed to have 4 ribs, the cuttings I got have 6 each So what type of Selenicereus did I really receive? Can it even be identified in such a miserable condition? Should I post a comparison of the cuttings I got next to Mutant's awesome TRUE Selenicereus Hamatus in the 'bitches and gripes' forum?

    Trich Germination: Need Advice

I've done the same thing cooking seeds. Although my ambient temp was around 35C, as EG said, I suspect the temp inside the container was well above this. None of those seeds germinated. Sowed some of the same batch and kept the temp down (20C night to 25-28 day C) with gentle heat from below and had great germination. Keeping a seedling grow log is a great way to keep track of what works and doesn't for your particular climate and setup! Keep at it, split up your batch of seeds so you can run several trials until you're happy with your germ rates.

Top 5 reasons why I Hate women

Yes, this stereotypical view is sad, considering I know plenty of men who are the primary caregivers (wives.partenrs are doctors, lawyers etc.) and they are just as caring as female counterparts. Any decent college level cultural anthropology class would demonstrate (to the astute student) that the woman as the "better" primary caregiver is simply an outdated stereotype. There is ample scientific evidence proving that children raised without a strong male role model are significantly less proficient in school, controlling for all other social/economic factors. Women as better carers by default? Well, that's the stereotypical assumption that stacks the odds against fathers in nearly all custody disputes (in the US at least). Any scientific evidence to support the theory that children raised by single mothers are ANY better off than children raised by single fathers??? And yes, I'm appalled that at least in America, if a man is physically assaulted by his female partner, the police show up over 1 hour later, whereas if a female is assaulted by a male, the police will be there in 10 minutes tops. Sure men on average are stronger, but whose to say guns, knives, chairs, other blunt objects aren't capable of instantly leveling or dramatically reversing the upper hand.

    My cat died yesterday

Sorry for you loss, been there with my boyhood cat also who passed nearly 10 years ago. Had kidney failure after 7 years, and having to put him down was almost as bad as watching him suffer through terminal illness. Just a few years ago, we picked up a kitten, and he has quickly become part of the family. Best wishes, and hopefully one day you might give a loving home to another cat or kitten!

San Pedro getting brown spots. Is she ok?

Yea, looks like the spots are around the aeroles so probably humidity related as Stillman mentioned. I'd also treat it as Stillman suggests Welcome, and good luck!

Chem trails, energy devices & acacia resin

What can we do to prove chemtrials and make this public? I think the strongest (scientific) evidence supporting the theory that we (US citizens) are unknowingly being sprayed with chemtrails is the fact that unusually high levels of aluminum, strontium and barium are being found in our rainwater and in the snow atop high elevation mountains (which could only be contaminated by clouds and precipitation), and the same metals (aluminum, strontium and barium) have been cited as weather modification media in US patents. I think our best bet for action would be testing rainwater, and when we can prove that there are unnaturally high levels of these metals (also implicated in weather modification patents) that we then have a right to petition our respective governments for environmental protection action. Publishing the results of rainwater/precipitation testing seems like the best way to prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that there are unnatural chemicals being widely dispersed in our atmosphere.

Chem trails, energy devices & acacia resin

That is such a great video... very shocking! Well documented, I've always been a skeptic of chemtrails until I watched this video, then I looked up the weather modification patents, the U.S. operation Popeye in the Vietnam War, the document "Owning the Weather by 2025". Clearly the US govt has been very interested and indeed actively pursuing large scale weather modification for a very long time. After I watched this video a few weeks ago, I started watching the sky, and the persistent lingering trails behind some aircraft and stretch across the entire horizon are strikingly different from the non-persistant simple water vapor contrails I have known as a child. Add to it the fact that the metals being found in our rainwater coincidentally match the metals described in weather modification patents. Anyway today I noticed a very strange phenomena with a few planes trailing persistent lingering trails (chemtrails). These planes seemed to be a following line cleared of clouds in front of the aircraft. As the aircraft moved across the sky, there was an effect of the cloud cover in front of it being strangely cleared out as the aircraft approached. As far as I am aware there is no natural phenomenon which would account for such strange cloud disappearance well in front of an oncoming aircraft. I was able to snap a quick photo of this plane, as I have never seen anything like this before. The first photo is completely unmodified, and the second modified only with an arrow pointing to where the cloud cover was seemingly erased in front of the incoming aircraft. Looked like the aircraft was either following a marker being laid in front of it by an unseen aircraft, or the aircraft itself was clearing the clouds as it moved forward. Maybe volumetric shadow caused by the billowing chem trail?

Stunning night flower - any ideas?

Looks kinda like a selenicereus flower to me, but the stem looks very much like a hylocereus. I wonder if hybrids between the two are possible.

    New Peres grafts - questions

Some times it takes a while to see growth in the scion when grafting to peres, especially if the peres starts throwing off new shoots instead of investing nutritional resources in the scion. Usually, I see new shoots coming off the peres about the same time I see the scion start to plump up... then I cut off the peres offsets, and the scion takes off. At a month or so, they should be starting to plump up a bit, maybe not noticable growth per se. I usually feed every third or so watering 10-10-10 in soil, or constant 15-15-15 in hydro culture. The peres can be overwatered like crazy, but that might cause splitting or overgrowth in the scion... once they start taking off. The CFL is good for peres and new grafts, you don't want to shock them/de hydrate them with too intense light. I also usually dial back the ferts until the grafts take. Once they are showing new growth then ramp it up if the scion will be ok with it. My peres grow just fine in cheap cactus soil, and even better in top soil / compost / coir (60-70 %) with some sand and pumice, this mix holds much more water than ordinary cactus soil. Kadasgarden webpage has some great info on peres grafting and soil types

    super fast growth

Got some SS02 x Serra Canyon (supposedly a humongous Peruvianoid) that are the fastest growing hybrids of peru/bridge from my last sewing, (so far) faster than my SS02 x SS01, but both are very vigorous gotta love the SS02 hybrids

    Advice on Freeloading Friend

So here's the situation: My girlfriend invited one of her female friends to live with her for a month or two since she just moved here and needed a place to stay while she finds her own place to live. This friend of my g/f wanted to meet new people here, so I introduced her to one of my friends. So my friend and my g/f's friend hit it off, and two days later my friend is spending every night over with my g/f's friend at my g/f's house... which means she now spends every night at my house, since she doesn't have room in her place for the four of us. Not only does this come off as my friend being incredibly clingy, but also rude and selfish. I really like my friend, but he lives with his mom and has a place to stay. I feel like hes totally taking advantage of my g/f's kindness, and straining a living situation that was already strained by having my g/f's friend living with her. My g/f won't say anything to him about this, and I feel kind of weird about saying anything to him about it, since he's not staying at my place per se. Thanks for the advice!

    Eileen's Ginger Beer plant recipe

I've read that you can retain more of the aromatics by adding a strongly brewed spice tea back to the fermented beer at bottling time to help retain the aromatics that are driven off during the fermentation. I always assumed sassafras and sasparilla were the go to herbs for making traditional root beer but I think most commerial sassafras / sasparilla oil here in the states has no safrole due to FDA banning safrole

    Advice on Freeloading Friend

thanks for all the replies guys! been there done that... different girl though of course the idea of hosting a swingers party came to mind also Talked with the g/f again about the situation. She then said something and my buddy left immediately so hope it wasn't too harsh, shes going to talk with her girl friend, cause her friend doesn't need to be inviting guests to be sleeping over every night... since its not her place. I'll be talking with my friend about it, and framing my concern as basically: you don't want to look too clingy to this girl you just met by spending every waking minute with her and maybe you could invite her to your place, me and my girl need some alone time also.

    Eileen's Ginger Beer plant recipe

I suspect the source of wild yeast is in fact the sultanas. Champagne yeast would be recommended for brews stronger than 12% ABV as they can handle the high abv without dying and giving nasty off-flavors. You could also substitute honey or corn sugar which ferment with a more neutral taste instead of regular table sugar which can ferment to a more "cidery" taste. Gearing up here for a 5 gal batch of ginger mead... a dry (not sweet) alcoholic "ginger ale": just honey, ginger, lemon juice, yeast extract and cali ale yeast. Personally, I'm all for using "cultured" yeasts as opposed to "wild" yeasts/bacteria, as the bacteria eat the sugar without producing ethanol and more specifically the lactobacillus create a "lambic" sour brew. Also some of the wild yeasts/molds ferment and impart a kind of wet cardboard flavor. For me brewers yeast (liquid or dry packs) are extremely consistent and start vigorous fermentation within 24 hrs and easily out compete any wild micro-organisms

    Ginger beer recipie?

Here's an all-grain recipe for 5 gallons alcoholic ginger ale from Paul White @ The Seven Barrel Brewery, New Hampshire, US. Hopefully you're permitted to home brew where you live! OG: 1.040-1.042 FG: 1.010-1.012 Potential Alcohol: 3.9% Ingredients: Grains: 4 pounds 6-row malt 4 pounds flaked wheat 8 AAU Hallertau hops (approx 1.5 ounces or 42 grams) 1 teaspoon Irish moss 1 ounce / 30 grams freshly grated ginger root 2 packages Edme ale yeast 150 grams corn sugar (for priming) Procedure: Dough crushed malt & flaked wheat in 3 gallons of water at 132-135 F and rest at 122-125 F for 30 min Boost temp to 150 F for 2 hour rest, and hold between 144 and 150 F during the rest Mash out and sparge to collect 6 gal Bring wort to a boil, adding all hops after boiling 15 minutes. Continue to boil for 45 min. Add 1 teaspoon irish moss and 30 grams grated ginger. Boil 15 min and turn off heat. Chill to 70 F, top up to 5 gallons and pitch rehydrated Edme ale yeast Let ferment 2 weeks, bottle with corn sugar. Age another 2 weeks. The recipe is pretty simple for home-brew; you could use up to 4 ounces or so of ginger to spice it up a bit, and change the grain bill to 8 pounds of 2-row malted barley for simplicity, and could always use up to 15 pounds of grain to make your brew stronger! A half pound of crystal or munich malt would add a bit of complexity to the malt profile. I've also found a recipe for an alcoholic "Ginger Mead" from Charlie Papazian's "Complete Joy of Homebrewing" which seems a lot easier to make for a novice home brewer and tastes more like the ginger ale soda pop as opposed to a malty ginger beer.
  25. Just wondering why none of the inline references are listed at the end of the documents so the claims can be further investigated. Any claim to actual research performed by the authors does not include trial size or adequately describe statistical significance of findings. The one thing I will always remember from stats class 12 yrs ago is that anyone can claim any thing from a few isolated trials, but until an adequate trial size has shown statistically significant differences from control, the 'experiment' can not be considered valid. And even so, a statistically significant correlation is not the same as causation.
