Meet up: Sydney, Central Coast, Newcastle

Yo groovin the moo lineup announced for Maitland here: http://2014.gtm.net.au/mtl-lineup.html Should be sweet!
  2. I have a cereus peruvianus about to flower in the next few weeks, and I'd love to get some fruit off it. I'm interested in some pollen if anybody has some available. Thanks, Cimi

Thank you! We will give it a go. Such a small time window, makes it more exciting! I hope you get some fruits also!

    LF Cereus peruvianus pollen

Yeah, the main thing is to keep it dry. So C. peruvianus is just a general term which covers many species? Like what this article says? http://cactiguide.com/article/?article=article3.php Well I'm not sure on the specific ID, but as DW said any Cereus pollen would probably do. There are so many cultivated varieties it's often pretty difficult to know the exact genetics of any given specimen. Thanks for the info. A few weeks might be a bit far off but thanks for the offer. Maybe next time it's about to flower I'll ask then. How long do you think it's possible to store pollen and retain its viability? Cheers

    LF Cereus peruvianus pollen

Thanks a bunch Dreamwalker. Damn these things grow fast. Unfortunately I don't really have room for another one. I know it's possible to harvest & store pollen so it stays viable for quite a while.

Not according to this: http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/07929978.1994.10676566#.UsFYTfTJV8E Yeah, I have seen the sab guide about using cement dust. Thanks Dreamwalker, it has a bud forming which I expect to bloom in 2-3 weeks' time. If I don't hear from anybody closer to me I might give it a shot with yours. Do you think there would be any problems with importing it into Aus? Thanks people!

    What happened to Herbalistics?

Thanks guys, sorry Well that's a relief! Feel free to delete
  8. Hey guys, I recently was browsing on Herbalistics. http://herbalistics.com.au/shop/catalog/index.php Unfortunately when I added something to my cart a message said they have now closed and "expect to re-open September 2013". They used to be a great business. Anybody know what happened to them? If they have shut down for good it seems a real shame. Hopefully they will come back, or other good businesses will pop up.

    Squishy loph

In my experience their texture can vary normally with season and other changes in conditions. Unless you can see any visible difference I wouldn't cut it open. Can you see any rust-coloured rot? Is the skin broken or marked? If not, I predict it will come good on its own.

    Looking for Chaya/Tree Spinach...

You can get something similar from Green Harvest. I have seen it in their catalogues before but it's not listed online at the moment: http://greenharvest.com.au/Plants/Information/Aibika.html More here: http://greenharvest.com.au/Plants/SummerLeafyGreens.html And there's another type of "tree spinach" second from the bottom here: http://greenharvest.com.au/SeedOrganic/VegetableSeeds/StirFryGreens.html

    Trade Thread issues

I guess we just need to check the rep of the person before deciding to post after them it the free trade thread. If their feedback is poor or absent, trade at your own risk. But then the thread will get held up because nobody will want to post after someone with bad rep. But we really need to use the feedback forum more. There wasn't a thread in place for the one trader who didn't end up sending my stuff, even though I now know that people had trouble with him before. But since I posted a feedback thread, at least people are coming out of the woodwork to concur.

Maybe a minimum time would be better? I guess that's why the rep forum is there, though. That and involving a mod if you have repeated problems might be the best approach.

    Bugs destroying Brugmansia/Datura

Yeah mine get into everything. Sometimes I think my garden is mainly just a playground for them!

    Bugs destroying Brugmansia/Datura

Bugs on brugs. Diatomaceous earth is magical: http://diatomaceousearthonline.com.au/ And chickens are also good at decimating slugs / snails and caterpillars (but they scratch up the garden beds pretty bad). Good luck with them.

    Trade Thread issues

Thanks for the support and input, guys. You have all been awesome. As it turns out, I have now received a few pm's indicating that most of the trades will indeed be honoured after all. I will now only be missing out on one trade, which is pretty good odds for the free trade thread. So thanks for your generous offers, but the universe is re-aligning and I'm happy with the outcome of this thread. A minimum number of posts sounds like a good idea. Maybe 10-15? What does everyone else think?

    Trade Thread issues

Thanks for creating this thread. I know I am still new here so maybe I don't really have a right to comment. I am feeling quite let down, though, because I have traded good stuff I value in the thread. If I had known I wouldn't receive some of the items advertised, I wouldn't have posted in the thread. EDIT: My whinge-fest has resulted in a flurry of PMs and now it appears likely that most of the trades will be honoured after all. Thank you, everyone. I get the impression from reading some posts in the members feedback forum that many people think if it's a free trade with no cash involved, you shouldn't actually expect to receive the item. Fair enough you can't expect them all to come through, but you do 'pay' for those items by sending your items to the person who posts after you. Every time someone fails too honour a trade, the cost is borne by the other members in the thread. The whole point of it is to be an honour-system. Otherwise there is no point to the thread. Maybe I have been a bit naive. I probably just need to spend a bit more time getting to know the members here so I know who is reliable. Maybe this should be in 'Bitches & Gripes' instead lol.
  20. So I guess I will not be receiving your items anymore, then? I sympathise, as I have had similar experiences, particularly in the free trade thread. Is it just me, or do many users simply not take this thread seriously, and just lie in an attempt to get free shit?

Give away (assorted seeds) Haiku comp

We are warriors, Custodians of our gods, Plants that teach and heal.
  22. Sounds interesting gunfighter. Next person gets nepata cataria x2 seedlings 5-10cm tall. And some Vietnamese mint (grows like a weed and makes damn delicious salads and stir-fries). It's very hardy. Edit: I have more custard apples on the way - I am good for 1x IOU custard apple seedling! \/
  23. Hi guys, I am thinking of moving my lophs out of pots and into the open garden one day. They are well-established but don't seem to be overly thriving. They are already kept outdoors, in terra cotta pots in part-sun. I like the fact that I can move them into shelter / out of harsh sun when needed in pots, but the open garden would probably allow them to grow bigger, build deeper roots and access a greater variety of nutrients. Has anyone here had success with this? If so, I would appreciate any tips about how best to go about it. Eg., soil preparation, position, fertilising. At present, I only feed Seasol a few times a year over spring / summer. Thanks for your feedback, Cimi
