  1. sounds like they are fully aware of the problems we associate with prohibition yet still use this technique to combat the problem of cannabis replicas. if i were the NZ government i would have waited another year or so and used Uruguay as a template, ironing out foreseeable problems with their policy, essentially 'cashing in' (unlike Uruguay) via regulation on the stigma of real cannabis. surely that would be the only method of almost eliminating imitation products. -dio

    unknown crest

hi team, a friend recently left this plant at my home for me without a tag and i am unsure what it is. i suspect Cylindropuntia or similar genus but i am unfamiliar with these so can not be 100%. a gnarly little crest, though, i am happy to give it a home. also a non cristate specimen in the same pot, should make ID possible. sorry for the bad quality of the photos, i am a shit photographer and have no idea how to work modern digital cameras. thanks in advance for any help given. - dio , , ,

3 - Matuacana Oreodoxa and i'd say 1 is a Mammilaria Sp., but i could be and probably am mistaken. -dio edit: 1 is actually Sclerocactus Sp. i was indeed wrong
  4. men behind the sun. Chinese historical war film about Japanese human experimentation program; unit 731. most of the real atrocities are dulled down for the film, but, some of the gore scenes are pretty well made for the time (arguably contains some real harm to animals, so, beware that if you are a cat lover). also, after the war in real life, these Japanese doctors were not sent to a Nuremberg equivalent, but instead pardoned by the U.S in exchange for chemical weapon research. -dio edit: typographical error edit #2: found it on youtube...
  5. to start, sorry to bring up an old thread. next, you can have nuclear power without nuclear bombs. the two are not codependent even if not mutually exclusive. as bad as nuclear weapons are, the best foreseeable method to prevent such weapons being destroyed is increased free trade. if Australia provides uranium to Russia to make power who sends waste to China for the atoms with the longest radioactive half-life to be trans-mutated who then sends the waste storage cask to whichever next country for long-term storage and so on. each country becomes dependent on each other for its own power and survival and large scale, indiscriminate bombings of anyone else becomes detrimental to your own country. radioactive isotopes with the longest half-life are only a very small fraction of the total mass of the nuclear waste, which as i mentioned, can be altered in a specific reactor to a less dangerous isotope. from memory, all bar 1 or 2 of the most dangerous atoms can be altered in this way to be MUCH more manageable. the storage casks developed by the US to store and transport nuclear waste are ridiculously tough. they have crashed a train into one and set it on fire for 90 minutes with constantly burning jet fuel to only minor cosmetic damage. the amount of radiation the waste in these casks puts out, even if it was to fall from the truck, one would simply be able to go and put the waste back on the truck while receiving a smaller radiation dose than a chest x-ray. footage of the train crash tests is shown below. also worth noting is that nuclear technology has improved almost infinitely since the 1970's in terms of plant safety, cost of operation, cost to build etc but many countries using nuclear power have not been able to build new reactors since the same time, meaning that every reactor in the U.S is the same technology as 3 mile island. they are considered safe by most knowledgeable nuclear physicists but it is ridiculous to be allowed still to operate those plants but not build new ones. there is a facility that was to be the U.S nuclear waste deposit site in Yucca Mountain, Nevada that was essentially perfect for its purpose (storage of the waste casks). the site was specifically chosen because of its dry nature, meaning casks could be left down there undisturbed for a long time with minimal water corrosion. after the government succumbed to pressure and cut off funding for the development of the site, which would have almost eradicated the problem of nuclear waste in the US (at the very least until an even better solution was devised), the same waste sits in buildings ON SITE at the power plants, just like Fukushima. by getting rid of the problem through transmutation and proper long term storage you also eliminate one of the key components people use to protest nuclear power. it was seemingly known by extreme left Americans that there would be less chance of ceasing nuclear power if there was less problem and so used all sorts of silly arguments against Yucca mountain. a main one being, paraphrased, 'to transport the nuclear waste there it would have to go through 140 major towns and past our children' which was a clearly emotive argument. you would actually need to be in the direct presence of a storage cask for over a week straight to go above the annual dose limit; which as ballzac mentioned is much lower than the actual point of ill health anyway (because believe it or not, nuclear physicists are concerned with safety) we are all exposed to radiation every day, eating bananas and Brazil nuts and carrots and watching tube TV's, why is it if a similar low dose of radiation comes from a "nuclear" source everyone shits themselves? in the 50's a young boy (Gordon Isaacs) was cured of retinoblastoma by pointing a linear particle accelerator into his face. it saved his vision. thank Jesus for radiation, but, only in that circumstance right? the JET fusion test reactor in the UK just set a new record for output to input ratio and have worked on developing a new fuel mix that will now be implemented in the ITER reactor which is currently being built. recent speculation predicts ITER will have a real chance of becoming the first tokamak style reactor to output as much power (hopefully more) that goes into it as early as 2035. if this does pan out over the next hundred years, that will further solve waste and contamination issues. in summary, there are lessons to be learned from 3 mile island, Chernobyl and Fukushima, but they definitely should not be 'nuclear power is the devil'. -dio

    ID Please?

bandario, we can at least tell that it is indeed NOT psilocybe subaeruginosa. if you zoom in on the photo you will notice the stems are slightly discoloured and rough, which are not traits of a sub. the cap colour and shape also strikes me as galerina sp. - dio
  7. if there is a hip hop song in the style of moscow death brigade i'm in (video included for reference for those unfamilar, one of their more gimmicky tracks) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nEmhamo7p9w id also be happy to contribute to a black/death/grind SAB proect, i've a bit more experience in this area. i'd only contribute though if i could actualy offer something benificial, if my skill level would bring down the quality of the track i will stay out and just enjoy the product if there was an EP or something made i could similarly make cover art (even for digital distribution between us, may as well) good idea - dio

How close are we to the fat-fighting drugs we need?

hey thunder and 'cheshire' ( ;) ) i have been absent for some time, probably a bit over a year. i was really suddenly and simultaneously thrust into the violent and full paced world of full time kitchen work and a full time relationship, thus cutting into my forum time. i've since left that job now, though, so only half of my gardening and forum time is taken up... i'll probably start a thread soon, few photos of a few things and an obligatory ID request or 2. i just noticed these posts while havin' a browse earlier, seeing whats been up recently. can't hurt to give him / her a reminder, as they have posted some almost human posts elsewhere. my uneducated 2 cents on the issue of weight loss and related medications is as follows: it is sad that people resort to having sections of their body removed or tied off to prevent over eating when in reality they are physically able to limit their own intake. the very marketing of weight loss strategies and pills and surgeries and whathaveyou is more than likely a big contributor to why many heavy people struggly to make the hard decisions to lose weight; they are convinced through external sources that they can not do it alone. when many overweight and obese people are also of lower financial standing, they can not afford someone else's help wile being discouraged from taking action alone. - dio

How close are we to the fat-fighting drugs we need?

i didn't read the post, too cluttered. looking through some threads today i have found several of your threads sitting dormant without reply. without being mean spirited, ii suggest you format you threads to be more understandable and add some of your own text to let us know your thoughts on the articles you are directly pasting here and why you have chosen to share them. perhaps post a link to the original article, summarise in your own words key points of the article, then make retort or present a rhetoric putting forth your opinion of the articles information you have shared. it could be that half way through that post thee is smoking gun evidence that Christianity is a farce and you want to share living plant specimens of diplopterys with us all and we would never know. -dio

What did you do to your cacti today?

today i went out and had a good look a what's been happening with my cacti (admittedly i have been a little negligent of late, not much time to spend outside in recent summers...) and had a bit of a think about what i will do with them once it's a bit warmer. a few nice columns that were stalled since arriving in the post have gotten used to their new situation and started to put on some good growth. a little bit of insect / snail damage, particular to the main growing limb of 2 penis plants, but they'll all come good and if anything just throw a few more pups for me. my favourite globular echinopsis (of which sp. i forget) has a pretty sever scale infestation, he is in seclusion now waiting for some warmth so i can go about sever treatment without further risk of loss. a few pups may be removed and both rooted and grafted just in case the sickly main head does succumb to it's infection. i have a few grafts to make, limbs to remove and propagate, and one gifted preuvianus with tip damage that may be sectioned. i have also recently been gifted a nice little crest with a non-crested specimen in the same pot that i would like IDd, the worst part is the species is on the tip of my tongue but i just can't seem to get it out. i'll make a new thread for this at some point. (also, hope all the crew here both old and new are and have been well. i have been absent from the forums for some time...) - dio

what came first, the chicken or the egg? the suicidal tendencies or the prescription to mind altering medication? i've had a similar discussion with a former acquaintance who said something like ''a lot of the people i know who use 'drugs' are mentally 'ill'', and i genuinely am curious to the answer.

    Avatar, how to?

here, a ready made avatar for you, simply put the URL in the input section labeled 'url' instead of clicking the browse option edited to say, if you needed one. dont know how to use paint and couldnt be bothered learning, or simply are feeling lazy and will get a better one later

    Avatar, how to?

click on your user name at the top of your screan, and select the link to 'my profile', from there, hover your mouse over the vacant void that is your lack of avatar and a 'change' radio button will appear, follow prompts to upload an image. to get an image suitable, find one you like (google images or a photo from your collection or anything really...), preferably square or so that you can crop what you like from it to be square, then, in microsoft paint or similar, crop to square and stretch the image down pretty small (smaller than 150 x 150 pixels, if MS paint gives a way to measure... the size of an avatar lol) and save the image, then, use previous instructions to upload it. all the best

What did you do to your cacti today?

just aquired a really nice, old notocactus magnificus and bought a nice pot for it. any way to roughly determine the age of such a pant? would have to be a bit larger than my head with several pubs the size of a fist. also potted my first TBM segment i received from a generous member here recently, was in the post for a little extra (Christmas period, not the senders fault) and had the beginnings of some type of rot at the cut point, so i sulfured it and let heal for a bit, should be solid now also gave a bit of a water and seasol treatment, a few plants needed it after yesterdays heat on a bad note, though, a random globular echinopsis i have looks to be on the wait out, gaping hole in the top of it full of rot and a big patch of sunburn now on that side also, short of grafting an areole i'm not sure how to save the genetics... at least it wasn't a loph, right?

    *little* giveaway

hey guys, welcome to dionysus' first little giveaway. i have a pretty mature A. Melanoxylon tree in my yard with seeds just ripening and a few pods open this morning, it may not be podalyriifolia but some of you might be interested, at least as practice germinating acacias or practice with tissue culture or somethin'. timber is a nice artisan timber, good for furniture making or instrument making. the tanins (maybe saponins also?) reduce the availability of oxygen for fish and hence can be used to stun fish in a small water body for surface collection, an aboriginal technique. according to wiki, there is also traces of tryptamine alkaloids in various parts, i think mostly NMT but maybe little DMT, >0.02%. not useful, but still interesting. wiki also states that aboriginal people may have derived some sort of analgesic from it, but, this i have 0 knowledge of and haven't heard mentioned else where and can't be bothered looking at the references, so, take that with a grain of salt. anyway, seed packets will have a random amount of seed in each, depending on interest, but i will cap the amount of packets i send out to 15 to ensure that everyone gets a decently useable quantity. express interest in the thread so others can count if they will be included and via PM with postal details. small trades will be accepted, but not at all encouraged or expected. i will pay postage also, of course with such small packages happy holidays everyone, and have a rad new year dio
