the question is for columnar plants but i assume would go for any habit of self infertile plants if one took cuttings from a single plant and grew them to flowering and crossed them, would the pollen be accepted? I'm thinking it would be no different than trying to cross pollen from flowers on the same plant and the pollen would be rejected?

I'm so pissed I missed an opportunity to get a copy of Backebergs Cactus Lexicon in a local online auction recently. Anyone knows a place to get these books don't hesitate to mention...

how long did you let the hoodia cuts callous for? did they dehyrdrate quickly?
-
heres a similar one of mine taken yesterday, I don't know about smrzianus though. one description I have says it is globular for a long time and doesn't get taller than 10 inches. plleeeeease be a red flower
-
lol, I know that book.

I recognize Borzicactus -_-
-
holy shit, you found a borzi. treat it well, they look so amazing when they put like 10 of those flowers out at once. I AM JEALOUS

you'd be surprised sometimes how fast the epidermis can recover from a bit of sun damage. on both globular and columnar plants I've burnt them and seen them return to former glory within 1-2 days.

well if it was a special specimen I don't see why anyone would want to essentially kill the tip when it could be propagated the normal way but then not everyone likes to propagate like some of us obsessive growers . I see this method as being useful for thin/top heavy seedlings or plants that don't usually offset and have a tip that cant simply be cut off.

tis a beauty of a collection, I can imagine you sitting out there with a deck chair and a cool drink admiring them.

The ubelmannianus needs to be crossed, I had over 20 flowers in total on 4 plants but was late on pollinating them so only about half have started developing fruits as I type this. Yes the trich also needs another plant to pollinate it.

That is amazing, the most wicked long spined Trich I have ever seen! i have seen spines that colour and size before, on a plant of mine that I never considered a Trichocereus and still don't. This photo is 2 years old and was taken just when I picked it up from a nursery.

Notocactus ubelmannianus see this thread if you like them: http://www.thenook.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=36527 the Trichocereus is one of the grandiflorus/huascha type plants but you don't often see them that thick. It reminds me of this plant (from the Auckland botanical gardens)

wow, look at how high it is branching.

excellent specimen, i love the photos

Seed is the way to go to get mutants but I'm not so sure things like the penis clone bridgesii seed could be found easily, if at all. I have a crested 'pachanoi' seedling doing very well, I believe they can be propagated by cutting and grafting, I'd be interested to know if crested cuttings can form their own roots.

i hope you do realise how much room 1000's of seedlings can take up after 1 year.

it is really sweet, grow the shit out of it ! can't wait to get a piece in the glasshouse..
-
it would be hard to guess the parents even after a couple of years, i think your out of luck.

the rib shape reminds me of a juuls
-
those really are some sweet clones, never really seen 2 'pronged' spines before.

just look at the conditions your mature plants are in and then the conditions of your seedlings and gradually work them up. imo you should stop looking for such specific advice and just use your intuition and find methods to work with your own environment and materials available. there is no 'how its done' technique.
