    new zealand pedro's

not really sure if this is considered a pedro, it has always had short spines for me until this pup...
  2. I can't wait to be able to give you a piece zee young Trichocereus seedlings are not as hardy as their mature form I have found, I still take quite care not to water them on cold cloudy days. I'm not so sure 'stem' is the correct term for what I was describing there, when the seed first germinates it grows a small body where the first cotyledons appear. When these first sprouted they grew very thin with a mess of areoles perched on top and a strange non uniform jagged body began to form. I'd never seen anything like it, are these really T huascha I wondered? They were much more sensitive to light than their surrounding family (macrogonus and pachanoi) I 'think' most seed growers bury their plants to the first spines when transplanting, the lower 'stem' part then expands into a mass which is the transition from body to roots. I had lost a few plants this way when burying the lower part which is still green and water sensitive so I decided to keep these raised, they seemed to be supporting themselves enough. My prediction is that in nature with wind blowing dust around that the surface would slowly build up around the base allowing it to turn into a woody, more rootlike structure... I'll slowly build it up as I see fit to mimic nature.
  3. It is on its own roots actually, I have left the young stem raised in fear of rot which I've seen to be more common when I bury it. I sowed 100 T huascha seed of which only 2 germinated, both being crests. It does look rather strange perched on a stem I agree. You can see its starting to go woody.
  4. I have 2 T huascha crests which look very similar

    Trich Spachianus for grafting

A book once said T pasacana is a great slow growing, long lasting stock. I'd imagine opuntia would also give a more natural looking scion

nice bridgesii everyone! i love them

    T. poco?

I might have confused you a bit zee, those seedling photos I had mistakenly labeled T poco were actually Pilosocereus. so this is most likely P glaucous, I forgot I sowed them in with the T poco batch.. I'm going to keep all my batches separate from now on. I guess I got some shitty T poco seed, might try it again next year anyway.

    T. poco?

It does look like celsianus but I wouldn't really know. If so, I think this definatly isn't celsianus... what then?

    Cactus seedling ID please?

I'm growing a batch of T poco if you want to see what they look like (hairy and skinny, 1 1/2" high so far)

    werdermannianus & terscheckii pics

nice pics are you certain this is terscheckii Michael? I'm just reading 'Simon & Schuster's Guide' which has a description and photo of T pasacana, the plant and flowers are a close match. Also I thought I had seen pictures of terscheckii with much wider flowers... please correct me on this! I have seen a mature specimen of pasacana grown by a wholesale seed vendor, it had very large and bristly black spines growing out of the lower 'trunk' part only - any sign of these?

    Some kiwi cacti

great to see some photos. i see what you mean about the unbelievable growth, the size of the new branches is impressive! definatly exceeds the growth I am getting in the glasshouse. I think I have a plant from that batch of seeds, the one you are calling a 'True' peruvianus, it caught my eye straight away as well, has a very nice blue glacous colour to I just realised the plant in my collection I was calling a short spine peruvianus is the same clone as your T pachanoi stock. they have the fastest growth of any plant I have. You know how lucky you are to score those crests im sure, looks like you did a fine job with cactodile dundee man to graft them, expect me to be begging for a cutting sometime in the future keep up the good work bro

    Germination Mediums

sowing 100 seeds and getting 40 mature plants is pretty damn good i think. I havn't sown a batch of seed yet with perfect vigor. that percentage you describe is usually the amount of runts I have found, which of course end up being the ones that succumb to rot and disease

    tricho fertility

I really think it was a fluke pollination from another 'cultivated' plant - i'm guessing an insect could travel miles to do this

    Bloomin Tricho's

sweet pictures, the last flower is damn cool I remember someone mentioned the differences in all the Tricho flowers, I think it was Archaea - I'm really starting to see what he means. sometimes its just a subtle differnence but I havn't seen many identical ones.

Cactus from Isla de Margarita.. ID?

I agree, I think that website has the ID wrong and it looks like a typical Stenocereus. Pachycereus pectin is described as having a trunk and you can see that growth habit is not geared up for that. I had that image on my computer and it was the first thing I saw, nicely labeled as Pachycereus.

Cactus from Isla de Margarita.. ID?

    looks like Pachycereus pecten-aboriginum
