Queensland cacti and succulent society show 2012 pics
Ethos replied to Stillman's topic in Cacti & Succulents
I have a TBM that is starting to grow that way and, I must also say that the rooted section is also badly scarred like your one. Here is a poor quality pic to compare to the TBM I have, I very much hope mine will turn out like the one you've got there. and a great score for $10 -
I don't know if there has been a topic posted about this before but bassically.. Theo Jensen is a kinetic sculptor who creates these creatures called Strandbeests He designs these 'creatures' under the ideology that he is creating new life forms that he is constantly adapting and changing to be able to 'survive' on their own and act independently. The creatures are mainly built from pvc pipe and can harness wind power, sense terrain changes and change direction accordingly. When I see these things crawling along the beach I cannot help but thing why is technology like this being utilised elsewhere, like in agriculture. I think with a little inginuity and utilisation of current techniques we could be the leading country in sustainability. My idea is initially focused on circle irrigation (also called central pivot irrigation), I'm sure you have all seen this sort of thing before if not here is a field grown by the means of circle irrigation. This style of farming uses a pivotal arm that irrigates crop space around a centre point. Now with a bit of adaptation utilising Jensen's idea's we could rig these pivotal arms with wind powered 'strandbeest' type structures to eliminate the use of electricity to move these pivotal arms. Using his sensor technology it could be possible to build powerless light tracking solar systems, which could in turn power irrigation pumps or be stored and used later. Also another idea that sprung to mind was using the algorithm Jensen uses to make his creatures walk it could also be possible to make structures on these pivotal arms that can also plow the land without using electricity. Ideally in the future I would like to see a 'strandbeest' that walks, prepares the land, sows the seeds, irrigates and possibly harvest. Let me know what you guys think as I personally think its an awful waste not putting these engineering marvels to good use. Regards, Ethos

I will also vouch for this, I have a rather large bush in my garden and the new shoots that it is putting out are all square stems. A simple leaf extract produced a very dark almost black (green) goo. Definitely mood lifting and levels out to a mild euporia

I would make sure to properly ventilate any light, fluoro or HPS. Fluorescent's create light in a completely different way to HID's. You should not expect HID bulbs to emit anywhere near the QUALITY of light that fluorescent's do, and you should not expect fluorescent's to emit anywhere near the INTENSITY of light HID's do. Fluoros create light by passing an electrical current through mercury vapor, producing UV light. The UV causes the phosphor powder coating on the inside of the tube to fluoresce, thus emitting light in the visible spectrum. With different phosphors generating different wavelengths of light, the colours can be controlled and customized by varying the combinations of phosphors used. Because the light is emitted from the phosphor, which is spread over a large surface area, coating the entire inside of the lamp, the light is not intense but it will give enough light to support caapi and viridis. HID's produce light by passing electrical current through different metal vapors, NO coating of phosphor in the way , but only gases which are controllable, safe and reliable can be used. So, the colours (different wavelengths of light) are severely constrained by the limited types of metal vapors that can be used. However, the radiation that is emitted is very INTENSE and often includes copious amounts of Infra Red for you to burn things with, like plant tops. From what I understand is if you have the space go buy a HID lamp if not use fluoro's, like kalika said fluoro's produce less heat and are therefore much safer

Ethos replied to Ethos's topic in Seed & Plant Swaps
The dood gets it, good job I will PM you mate -
I have another one of my many cacti up for auction again due to downsizing my collection, once again I would like to post a picture but the computer I am on will not cooperate with my camera. This was a single headed caespitosa de-graft I bought from a member on these forums, since then it has formed many roots and has two new pups forming. It is a nice healthy cactus and at its widest measures 3cm. will be sent with roots intact and the starting price is $25 Potential buyer's post what your bid is in this thread, there is no limits on how many times you can bid. The auction will end 10pm tonight and the winner will be the person with most recent bid when I chime in at 10pm, they will then be PM'd bank details to perform a direct deposit. Note: Only bidder's from Australian states that allow this plant to be sent through Auspost, will be sent through express post covered by me which gives the fastest delivery time. Happy bidding, Ethos

So I wanted to post a picture of the Loph in question but I can't connect my camera device to my computer, It was grafted around 2 years ago so is probably just over 2 years old it is 2cm exactly from the peres stock to the top of the scion and is 2.5cm wide and will be sent attached to peres stock with roots inbound. Starting price $20 Potential buyer's post what your bid is in this thread, there is no limits on how many times you can bid. I have a TBM which was attacked by something and continues to grow, the wierd thing is when the pup was attacked it seemed to have changed its habit of terminating and then pupping and continued to grow like a columnar with only 2 areole's on one side. It looks sort of like a baby version of the melted wax bridgesii, would this be possible for a TBM to change it's Monstrose properties?

Hey Everyone, I will be auctioning off this Lophophora Williamsii, a starting price of $30 I have had this Loph for a bit over a year now and it has thrown out around 4 seed pods and flowered 7 or 8 times, the only reason I am letting it go is that I have to downsize my collection and focus on work. It measures 5.7cm at its widest and is on its original roots or so it seems. Here are some pictures Potential buyer's post what your bid is in this thread, there is no limits on how many times you can bid. The auction will end 10pm tonight and the winner will be the person with most recent bid when I chime in at 10pm, they will then be PM'd bank details to perform a direct deposit.
