    Coleus blumei

I found some info in the ethnobotany forum stating that this plant was legal and relatively easy to source. This was written in 2009 however and knowing the Australian governments penchant for promoting the extinction of plants I thought I should see if there's been any change to its status. I couldn't find it on the SAB store anymore so that's what prompted me to start this thread. It's a beautiful plant that I would like to grow if Auntie Julia will let me. If people know of where to obtain this plant, assuming it's still legal, I would appreciate a heads up. On another note I feel very sorry for plant enthusiasts of the future who will not get to know the pleasure of rearing so many plants as they will probably be illegal and so rare that it's very difficult to obtain specimens. All of us here attempting to preserve this genetic material should take the time to give ourselves a little pat on the back followed by a swift to any government that erodes the genetic diversity of the planet further. Peace Sola And thanks in advance for any information.
  2. Hi all, I've just finished constructing a new microclimate for some P. viridis, probably have room for 5-6 plants. If anyone has taken cuttings and is interested in trading or selling some please let me know, either way is fine. I've done some leaf cuttings that are still rooting but seem quite content atm just would like to fill the space now. The leaf cuttings will probably be ready by next summer and I'll have another microclimate by then. Cheers Sola

    caapi in SA

I'm interested to hear from anyone with experience growing Banisteriopsis caapi 'au naturale' in a mediterranean climate, basically anywhere in the southern part of the continent. I want to plant my caapi in the ground and want to know if it'll grow alright if it's kept watered through the hot/dry summer. I am willing to use some of the collected rainwater to give it a go, but will it retain it's leaves during periods when the humidity is likely to be very low? Also as it will be in the ground when winter arrives, will it re-sprout leaves from the stem after it has lost them through the inevitable cold spell or will it start from the ground with a larger root system? Most importantly will it survive in conditions so unlike it's native habitat? I always like to have my plants eventually in the ground to live with minimum inputs but am willing to give it more attention as necessary. Any techniques that have worked or even attempts that didn't would be appreciated. I will build up the soil and mound it to aid drainage, plant under trees and let it climb, mulch heavily and keep watered. That is all I can think of to do so any advice or experience would be great. Thanks in advance.

    WTB Mandrake plant

I got some seeds from all rare herbs and while germination rates were quite good, 80%ish, they don't seem to like being transplanted so plant them into deep pots only one or two seeds per pot. Then you can transplant either to a deeper pot or plant out. They have a very deep tap root that doesn't seem to like to be disturbed, at lest when young. I always use a top quality potting mix as well and water with a weak seaweed solution or worm juice once or twice a week. Good luck in your search, I think the fresher the better, as with many species.
  6. Just wondering if anyone has info. on Psychotria ioniceroides. It's native to Eastern Australia, probably just Queensland and NSW but I don't know for sure. Any information or experience with this plant would be appreciated. I'll try to upload a photo, good looking plant but not sure of efficacy as ethno. Cheers Sola

    unknown 10-15yr old cactus

I think this specimen is Cereus hexagonus, I've seen it tagged at The Botanic Gardens.
  9. I'd like to add a few more rare and interesting cacti to my collection. I'm interested in any crested and/ or monstrose cacti and would also like some crested Loph's if they're available. I understand the crested Loph's are very rare but just thought I'd try. Also interested in regular Loph's as well. Can trade or pay cash for interesting specimens. Thanks Sola

    Lophophora williamsii williamsii

Very interesting, I'd like to have several ex situ sites of preservation for these plants so it's good to see leaf matter, rocks, cover, soil etc. Your posts are always helpful and interesting. I'll be interested to read the published material when it's available too. Is it likely to be a journal article?

    sowing out hoodia

Brilliant thread and photos! I've always wanted to grow Hoddia's, my first packet of seed recently arrived, so I thought I'd do a little research when I stumbled across this little gem. I hope there are lots of successful Hoodia germinations and there's plenty of genetic variety to go round.
  13. Thanks for sharing trucha, sounds like you do have an awesome job if you come across these throughout the day. Wish my ethno skills were better when I lived in that part of the world. Awesome plants, interesting that the cristate genes persist nearby showing localised distribution of pollen.

Giveaway seeds and a few cuttings and plants

Mate I'd be super keen on the Cereus peruvianus monstrose, Mimosa pudica, Pilosocereus royenii, Hymenosporum flavum, Notocactus and any Acacia's that may still be left. Not sure if any or all of these are still available, just thought I'd put up my preferences and leave it up to you what you. I'd be happy with just one but more would be good too. Thanks heaps

  22. Great information, I can't wait to try this and see what interesting cacti cocktails result from experiments. Also it may explain why I have a seed pod developing on a cactus that a far as I know had nothing around to pollinate it. I had a large amount of dolomite crusher dumped nearby for garden paths etc. Some of it may have blown up as fine dust and become the first success of this technique at my place... and inadvertantly at that! Are seed pods typically smaller than woule be expected when using this technique? These ones are half the size I'd expected. However since I had nothing to pollinate it and didn't know how it happened I was pleased anyway. Of course some other means of pollination may have occurred without my knowledge but neighbours are a long way away and very few have cacti. Thanks EG!
  23. Looks good to me mate..... I'll bid $110
