I'm not sure if you've done it intentionally or not, but you've really captured some awesome shots demonstrating the mathematics of plant growth. That second shot of the cauliflower is a prime example, but heaps of great angles in there. Nice work (both on the photos and on the garden).

Yeah, Amz, it was when the cactus pic started a stirring in my loins that I had to bring the topic up. I think that's gotta be it, Yawning Man. Spawn in spring, nine months later it's the start of winter so you pop out a kid and huddle in a cave under some leaves while your offspring is most fragile. Jabez and Bogfrog, you both make good points. And Psylo... high five.

what is outside the universe

If you were to add "... at least, before we die." then you would be stating the one and only irrefutable fact in our existences. (IMO) -
What an awesome thread.

Tihs was a cool tnihg I saw ocne wehre yuo can bsaiclly raed a setnecne wihutot too mcuh toubrle eevn if the wrdos hvae jbumeld ltetres bsaed on the sahpe of the wrod as lnog as the frist and lsat lerttes rmeian the smae. midivan and medium don't have the same last letters, but you get the general idea. I get the same thing where you have to do a double take to confirm words on a page that you've misinterpreted. Another thing I get that's similar is looking from one side of the room to the other and suddenly having a word appear in my head, usually something unexpected like "hell" or "sex". Have to go back and scan the room for several minutes before I can actually locate where I read the word and whether I read it correctly. Might have actually been "help" or "exit". Might have appeared on a sign on a far wall or on a magazine cover lying on the table next to me. Might have been from my peripheral vision or might have been straight ahead. Can frustrate me for minutes until I can locate the word. There's a school of thought about teaching kids words before letters because the recognition of the word makes more logical sense than trying to assemble abstract concepts (such as letters) into meaningful words. Maybe a similar thing to this?

That massive phallic cactus even has a head on it.

Are you from Australia, Dolos? It's lost a lot of its nastiness here as a word. Like calling someone you mate. "hey cunt, feel like catching up for a beer tonight?" -
Yeah, I've positised. I'd like to be able to embed audio as we can video.

No lost cred from me, Incog. John Williamson has a few songs with similar themes. One that always gets me is "Purple Roses" Excellent song writer/lyricist.

It's not what what you're hoping it might be, but can't help further than that. -
what is outside the universe
Rabaelthazar replied to qualia's topic in Creativity, Spirituality & Philosophy
I reckon the universe is a strange loop. If we zoomed out far enough our solar systems would resemble tiny particles making up a greater whole (the universe) which if we zoomed out even further would appear as, say, a sub atomic particle and exist in conjunction with many other universes/sub atomic particles which as we zoomed out further would make up atoms which would make up molecules which would make up matter which would make up stars and planets which would make up solar systems which would make up universes. Nothing too unusual there - certainly nothing that hasn't been said before, but the bit I think is the doozy is that the universe we live in is actually the same one that we'd observe if we zoomed out far enough. Likewise, if we could zoom in far enough down through the quarks we'd actually come across our own universe, existing down there simultaneously. Now, in terms of the expansion. I reckon that like on a revolving disk a point on the outside of the disk moves at a greater speed than a point near the centre (or possibly the inverse - I'm making this up on the fly) the larger versions of our universe (which of course are the same as the smaller versions of our universe) have a much faster passage of time so if we were to observe our universe as a tiny particle from out in the larger version of our universe we would perceive the expansion as happening in a fraction of a fraction of a second. So, while we perceive our immediate universe as expanding very slowly we are really just perceiving a very slow version of a particle coming into existence and disappearing again as we have observed in tiny particles in Quantum Physics. Likewise, the tiny particles that we observe appearing and disappearing are really universes having a big bang, expanding and eventually dispersing into nothing. For the smaller versions of ourselves living in those smaller universes it appears to take eons. So we're all simultaneously existing and not existing in the strange loop that is our universe. Who's with me? -

There are certain ways to re-spark magic. This is the Corroboree. Need I say more? -
Hey Jabez, I met you at the Ottways camp last year and I thought you were a really interesting guy. A bit intense, but generally good fun and with some really interesting ideas. Just thought I'd put that out there as there are surely other people who dig you too. My take on this is: If there's no meaning to life and we're just machines created by genes in order to help them live forever and our consciousness is merely a construct to enable this machine that we are function more effectively then... we can do whatever we want. If you want to smoke pot all day every day - do it. If you want to shag inanimate objects - do it. If you want to meditate - do it. If you want to travel around the country living out of your backpack - do it (which you did, which is awesome). Life could be a test set for us by a god or it could be that life is just shit a lot of the time - I don't know. Enjoy the bits where it's not shit - that's really the only part we've got control over. Anyway, hope you come good. Peace.

Hi MagicalMedic. Welcome to the forums. I don't want to come across as a prat, but I'm sure I will. I've noticed about 20 posts from you today, many of which are dragging up old threads that we've all finished with (generally a no-no by unwritten rule unless you're adding something useful and relevant). Now this post complaining about the forum you've only just joined. Chill out a bit and get to know us a bit before offering advice. Hope you stick around. Enthusiasm is great and I don't want to quell yours, but I feel I wasted a good bit of time reading your irrelevant posts tonight. Peace. -
I like this vid too.

This thread reminded me of this video... I'm pretty sure it was posted somewhere on the Corroboree a while back. Not sure how much weight to place on it, but I like the idea.

Good onya, Obtuse. Sounds like fun.... although will two weeks be enough time for this procrastinator to actually getting around to finding a pen?

I vaguely remember this being discussed within another thread some time back, but couldn't find anything using the search engine. Please feel free to link me to previous topics if you remember them or answer afresh. Basically, I know it is illegal to chop down a tree in my own yard. My questions are: What constitutes a "tree"; and Why is it illegal to cut down a tree on your own property? We had a pretty full on storm in Melbourne a couple of nights ago and a small tree (trunk about 3" diameter and about 6' tall) in my side passage was damaged and blocking our access. Simple solution... I chopped it down, pulled out the root system and broke the tree into pieces that would fit in my green waste disposal bin (unfortunately it was of no ethnobotanical value). Did I break a law? Should I have paid an arborer to come and do what I was able to do safely in half an hour? We're not talking about a 20' oak tree. Second part of the question is what's the reason for the law? Is it a safety thing? Is it about maintaining a particular level of plant material? What's the deal? Any answers appreciated.

Yeah, I'm with you Santiago. I've wished i the past that I had a physical copy of the info on Erowid. I'd buy a book, and be happy to pay $80 or even $100 for it.

I'll give you a game, Drifter, next time I actually make it to a meet.
