Erythrina vespertilio and Eugenia reinwardtiana problem
poisonshroom replied to Wameron36's topic in Ethnobotany
Id say too much water for the coral trees - mine go like that sometimes in summer. I dont think they like excessive humidity as the only places Iv seen them growing (apart from along ross river) are more inland areas that are usually very dry. Not sure about the other one, but looks like another fungus though. -
Awesome thread! Iv seen opuntia growing out of fallen fruit on the beach before. The fruit didnt look too old either (it took months for 1 out of 6 opuntia seeds to sprout after soaking in GA-3 using the takeaway container method). The Sceletium seeds idea sounds really good too - might try that out tonight actually. The sea beans have that super hard coating because they float around in the ocean sometimes for years before they find land. Iv heard of the plant growing from someone's lung before - I think it was a pine tree. Iv also heard of a polypore fungus of some kind colonising someone's leg i think it was - it was apparently because some spores got into a cut and somehow started growing. Currently im trying an overnight soak in (dilute) potassium nitrate containing fertilizer on some Tabernaemontana orientalis seeds, but I might also give the sphagnum moss thing a go - I found some trees at a nearby beach, so I have access to more pods if I need. Would coir work the same?

Sounds like an excellent idea - cant wait to see peoples contributions and add my own =] I think a comprehensive list with info, pictures and links to suppliers is a better idea than having it just in the webstore while your browsing specific items. It would be much faster and easier to get information or to find what your actually looking for. -
Terminalia I think - do some leaves go red and/or blotchy at different times of the year? It also could be N. orientalis as ferret suggested, but Iv never seen one with corky bark like that. If it is it will have big, rounded stipules (the things that cover the emerging new growth - a prominent feature on anything in the coffee family like psychotria). Also for it to be N. orientalis the leaves are always in pairs opposite eachother along the stems and the branches also come out like that Better pictures would help (preferably of a whole, single branch) - both species (and their families for that matter) have very distinctive growth habits

That hodgkinsonia sounds interesting. Im sure i saw some of these in cape tribulation (along with hairy psychotria), but there was so much else to look at around there, so I didnt bother trying find out what they actually were (I was on a plant identification course for uni). If anyone further north (im in Townsville) can find some of either Id be interested getting some specimens. As for Indo ethnos the person to talk to is Juicemonkey on the other forum (EA) - He regularly travels between here and there and has plenty of local knowledge from both countries or should be able to track down more info.

Santalum acuminatum is actually the parasite and the acacia (along with potentially other species and families) is the host. I got seeds from LokStok, but I havnt had a chance to give them a go. They need to be soaked in giberellic acid and/or cracked open with a vice or something before planting to get them to germinate quicker (and more successfully). Iv recently seen seeds on ebay if your interested - and the seeds apparently become more viable over time (an increase from something like 5% germination to 30% or something after 2 or 3 years), so if they send you old seeds you might even have more success.

Sounds potentially dangerous - Iboga alone can be fatal to some, and its effects seem to be pretty harsh on the body (cardiovascular effects etc), Id say its strong enough by itself. In answer to your question though it is likely an MAOI would potentiate the Ibogaine & co. and I believe the combination may be contraindicated (whether or not thats just a general precaution or if its been properly established, im not sure).

I have my septum, lip (used to have snake bites, but one healed over a long time ago), both ears (12mm stretcher in the left, 10mm on the right and a stud next to the stretcher on the right ear) and i also used to have my eyebrow pierced, but it annoyed me too much - always got caught on towels, clothes, mine and others' hair etc. Thinking about getting my tongue done while i have a couple of weeks off work

WANTED: Sceletium Tortuosum -Seeds or Cutting
poisonshroom replied to Goldtop's topic in Seed & Plant Swaps
I have some S. varians seed from herbalistics I could probably share too if you are interested. -
@ random - seeds from store bought fruit are fine to plant out. I usually cut a small piece off the end of some when I eat them and clean off and plant the seeds and get really good germination rates. They are probably hybrids though, so the plants arent likely to grow true to the fruit you get them from. I also have red seedlings and white cuttings available if OP is still interested =]

Thats true, but in pots they may not develop the nodules properly because the bacteria that form them often isnt present in the soil or on the seeds.

Bridgesii monstrose?
poisonshroom replied to Quixote's question in Cactus & Succulent Identification
Its a lovely cactus anyway. The only place i can find them around here (especially at that size) is in rich people's yards -
Bridgesii monstrose?
poisonshroom replied to Quixote's question in Cactus & Succulent Identification
Monstrose bridgesii doesnt have any ribs (except when the pups first emerge) and the spines are only at the base of the segments. It basically looks like a bunch of dicks growing off each other (hence the common name penis plant) -

Have been away too long! How do I find my friends?

Hey gem - Im pretty sure Im your friend (on facebook at least ). In fact I think you invited me to EntheogenGaia last night/this morning =] -
Cacti, cuttings and seedlings for sale
poisonshroom replied to poisonshroom's topic in Seed & Plant Swaps
Iv decided to continue this sale as Im not going to cairns any more (damn subject adviser only told me about the subject after enrollment had closed, which is a real bummer as the course was ethnobotany and this is the last year JCU will be running it - they are phasing out botany as a major at JCU ) Anyway everything not crossed out is still available, plus Eileen and another slightly smaller eileen pup. Anyone who wants moringa seedlings should let me know early so I can grow some more (the ones advertised are too big to post now - they grow incredibly fast here - and getting them to that size will only take a week or two). Soulfire - you should make a few more posts to get your pm's activated because we'll need to pm to get all the details sorted, but I have everything on your list available (including a moringa seedling that is still a postable size). -
Putting sanf on top will probably make it worse as it compacts and becomes hydrophobic. It is normal for all the leaves to fall off when you first get it. if your worried about drainage, put a bit of soap or soil wetter into your next watering and that should help the water penetrate the soil better. Your mix sounds fine as it is and is pretty much what i have mine in. I wouldnt use garden soil for pot plants though as it doesnt have much nutritional value and tends to become hydrophobic easily as well. Mine have always lost all their leaves when i first get them and also in winter, but they should send out two branches from the top after a few weeks. Just make sure you keep an eye on the tip. If it starts to dry out too much or gets kind of squishy (rotting) cut it off a little way below where the healthy tissue begins again and lower the humidity a bit until it heals up (like with cacti). The sap forms kind of a protective callous. Iboga is a bit fussy, but is actually quite resiliant and usually bounces back better than it was before after some shock.

Thats a gross, but interesting fact Paperbark and eucalypus are two completely different species though. Paperbark is similar to the species tea-tree oil comes from. Eucalyptus could be toxic in higher doses, so im not sure how good an idea it is to make a tea from it

If you have a problem with Morning glory then id say youll have a problem with both of the others. Up here in Townsville HBWR is definitely an invasive species - its everywhere and grows as much as 10-15m up trees and can completely smother them. It also just pops up everywhere, which means the seeds spread easily. It usually dies back late winter here after its produced seeds, but within a couple of months its back in full force. I have a R. corymbosa as well and it definitely appears to have the same weed potential. Its in a small (15cm) pot that I rarely water and is on its side, so it barely gets any rain water either, but its still growing strong. Both HBWR and rivea get much thicker stems than morning glory too, making them difficult to remove. In perth both will probably die back over autumn and winter, as they are quite tropical (iv heard of HBWR struggling in brisbane), so you might be alright. Im sure some perthians will chime in soon with more specific info though

Definitely - and I also agree with the comment someone made about the strong growth - one of my fastest growing and fattest. Mine have changed their ribbing a few times in the 3 or 4 years Iv had them, and they are pretty resistant to the high humidity here in summer

Id say either pach or scopulicoula, probably scop.

All bear fruit, not all of them are worthwhile though. Some have really small spiney fruit that have next to no flesh (mostly seeds) and some have a disagreeable flavour.

Yeah, Iv definitely heard of people being poisoned by honey made from datura and brugmansia pollen. All parts of the plant contain tropanes including the pollen, so it makes sense.
