  7. ^ looks like a great read! It does seem that books and all other media for that matter has a greater influence when people are young. Imagination just needs a kick start and then off it goes!
  8. While climbing a plum tree today, it occurred to me that The Faraway Tree may have had a profound impact on my life... well, my past times on the way home from work anyway. There is something hauntingly beautiful about gnarled trees... especially those that guard the threshold between the profane world of suburbia and the sacred world of the forest.
  9. It is almost a shame to eat such amazing art... But I guess that's part of the appeal! It's almost a psychedelic idea, to consume something beautiful like that. What are these cakes made of? Is there cream and sponge cake inside, and the the outer decorations made with sugar and colourings? I would be curious to see one in the process of consumption by a pack of kids!

time for the kids to move out

cool, I can use the heater and stone bench as a heating mat and I have some organic liquid fertilizer around so will get on to this ASAP. just need to get some appropriate soil together - I am thinking coarse river sand, perlite and small amount of soil - does this sound okay?

time for the kids to move out

Hey SallyD, cheers for the advice. The problem is I am moving soon, and I would like to have them in individual pots to give to people as presents. I really should have repotted sooner. They still seem to be putting on growth now, so maybe if I am quick they will be okay. It wouldn't be o nice to give a cacti that is dying as a present to some one, so hopefully they turn out okay.

    SWIM SPECIAL:

My first reaction is to say... We should not be too eager to find scapegoats, be they tony abott, the media, or just other less finely tuned individuals than we deem ourselves. We are the creators and nurturers of the world we find ourselves. The us versus them dichotomy is a significant barrier to humanity taking proactive measures to build a better future. But at the same time I hear what dimitri is saying; that there is a sinister undercurrent to modern civilisation that hints at malevolence if not plain evil. Through this lens, It is though humanity is the love child of Gaia and some inter dimensional beings; at the same time as we can appreciate the beauty and harmony of nature, we are hell bent on transcending our monkey existence via technology. If you look back through history it is clear most species exist for some time before giving way to a new improved form. Perhaps we have circumvented our fate on this wheel of natural evolution via epigenetic evolution, ie our bodies no longer has to change as we can create tools to deal with whatever hurdles the natural world places in our way. But what if the purpose of humanity is to give birth to a new order of existence, one that exists in circuitry and machine rather than living tissue. We don't really know what conscious is, and who is to say that it cannot manifest in synthetic substrates. Dimitri appears to be the messenger of (or for) the future, that is for sure.

    Ecopsychology

Connection with nature is something I think about a lot. It is almost something I am addicted to. Other people seem to be happy to lock themselves inside at the most beautiful time of the day such as dawn and dusk. I feel a bit lost if I don't feel the air rushing throu my hair and watch the sun set every day. I am sure a lot of people here feel the same. I was riding my bike yesterday, and a dog was in the back seat of a car in front of me. He looked at me most excitedly, then a look of sadness came across his little face as he/she realised they were stuck in a car, blocked off by glass and metal from the sights, sounds, scents and sensations of being free under the sky. This really drove home the importance of being in contact with nature to me; it reconnects us to our larger Gaian existence that is often hidden from us by the ego that plants is firmly and solely in our bodies. Mckenna talked about the importance of the earth and nature and its relevance to space travel in one of his lectures. Nature represents fertility and Eros, while space represents sterility. He even postulated that humans may not be able to reproduce in space due to the lack of Eros, that the surrounding nurturing field of nature is necessary for conception. Are we as a species therefore forever bound to the earth? This is a real tension I feel especially considering the direction of civilisation today. We may not be able to exist with connection with nature, yet we are unconsciously (or consciously maybe) reducing our existence to one of synthetic products and electronic circuitry, and possibly even to remove ourselves entirely from the biosphere via space. However one must ask themselves the question whether they are then happy to tie their fate to that of this third rock from sun. Thanks for your indulgence. Really interesting links will check it out.

tony abbott is our new PM!!

Actually I think politicians like tony abott are probably pretty smart... Smart enough to work out what appeals to the masses anyway. He was a Rhode's scholar if that kind of thing holds weight for intelligence. But intelligence doesn't necessarily translate wisdom. The appeal of power seems to corrupt whatever morals and compassion politicians have. Tony abott, perhaps once an intelligent, forward thinking young man, is now reduced to three word slogans and racism as policies.

    Terence McKenna a CIA/FBI Agent?

Oh my Jan Irvin is scrapping the barrel again for PR. darwin, huxley and mckenna... wtf. his latest obsession seems to be claiming that any psychedelic figure more well known than himself was/is part of some illuminati conspiracy. If you want to get the straight story on mckenna, read brotherhood of the screaming abyss by his brother Dennis. Terence may have had many personal issues and lived a quite incredible life, but he certainly wasn't working for the CIA.
  19. Wow bizarre, dirty and beautiful stuff man.... Some interesting juxtapositions of 22nd century dough conveyor belts and tryptamine crystallisations. The looping videos not so keen on, but the neon blue floating city and a ladies smile with and epic finale was very cool \"/

    I finally got Wood!!!!!

Nice one man hope it keeps you warm this winter.
  21. This is so true Big Red (sorry my quote button isn't working), but I would take it on step further. Life, existence itself in the material world, is our 'practice', our chance to sculpt and refine the soul. I always find solace in this notion when life gets tough; it is in our darkest hours that we grow the most.
  22. Also while I remember it, I had a chance to visit a few of the happy high herb shops that are sprouting up all over California recently. There kratom is the number one product. Te friendly girl behind the counter explained the different qualities of the red, white etc strains, and how to make tea out of it etc. lots of cliched Cali surfer dudes coming in proclaiming 'that stuff is awesome bro!'. Indeed.
  23. Being in Europe, I have had a chance to explore kratom a bit. Extracts are good for ease of transportation, but high quality raw powdered material can deliver strong effects with as little as one teaspoon. There is a spectrum of alkaloids so perhaps some are missed wih certain extractions. The effects can come in between 30 to 60 minutes, with a very nice euphoria that lasts for 1 to 2 hours. Some nausea can be experienced here especially at high doses. For me the pleasant euphoria then gives way to an unpleasant 'scattered' state of mind that often makes me regret having taken it. This seems a quite different state to the sedation due to opiates, so those attempting to replace opiates with kratom should proceed with caution. But this could be an individual response. The best way to use it IMO is crude ground raw material steeped in boiling water, about one gram. Anything more gives me unpleasant side effects as noted. An interesting effect of kratom is increased stamina. One feels like they could run walk swim fly forever.... A useful effect at times! Good for howling at the moon etc.
