Yeah spiro can be a nut, but the experience is worth it imho.

I worked at Coles briefly and during training I was told that although the sign at the front says it is a condition of entry that you show your bag, you are under no legal obligation to do so and furthermore if the customer refuses, simply say "ok, no problem" and let them leave. You are then supposed to alert security but that's as far as it goes. I always refuse, police included.
