Acacia acuminata seedlings stalling
andros88 replied to andros88's topic in Australian Native Plants
Thought I would update this thread with a little experiment I did where I varied the soil type for seed raising. As shown in the attached photo, a variety of seeds were planted (A acuminata broad, narrow & burkittii) at different times in three different soil types: 1. Native mix (low phosphorus) 2. Native + normal potting soil, Native + cactus mix (mid phosphorus) 3. All cactus mix (highest phosphorus) Even though I didn't control vital parameters (time of planting, seed type or even the number of seeds in each soil batch etc - although I took care to distribute seeds between soil types at time of planting) its clear that the members of the native mix performed better than their counterparts, growing greener, larger and faster. Members of the native+cactus+potting showed more yellowing + stunted growth (and greater susceptibility to powdery mildew). The single member of the cactus mix has dried up and died. As an aside, any recommendations on how to combat powdery mildew on A acuminata seedlings? -
Wanted - can trade for other plants or for $$.

Hi all - thanks for your responses. I planted 40 seeds on the 5th of March after hot water treatment. After no germination for a couple of weeks (this is the 2nd time I tried germinating burkitii) I did a range of things: 1. Dug up some seeds + scarified outer shell with knife or sand paper & placed again in warm water. Then placed back into soil. 2. Left all seeds to dry out in the sun (soil was totally dry). 3. Re-wetted the seeds. Seeds from the both the scarified & non-scarified groups have now germinated (5 total). It seems they respond to dry & wet cycles. Have found germinating burkittiis to be more difficult than other legume-type (Fabaceae family) plants (have germinated a. confusa, a. acuminata narrow, typical, bundleflower, mimosa hostilis with just hot water treatment with higher germination rates).

I would love to attend this if only I wasn't overseas at that time. Luckily the film is available for rent/purchase on vimeo:

Very cool - thanks for sharing! I also have some gametophytes growing in my cacti "takeaway tek". I had no idea cacti follow "Alternation of generations" in this way (unless the seeds I bought were contaminated somehow). Also a youtube video with a good explanation of this phenomenon on ferns:

How do I sign up?

I'm glad to hear that - I suspect mine is going through the same cycle... it seems stressed for some reason.

I live in Sydney and would be glad to help in any non-skilled capacity possible (don't know anything about mushroom cultivation but am keen to learn).

Acacia acuminata seedlings stalling
andros88 replied to andros88's topic in Australian Native Plants
Thanks so much for your advice Gimli, it’s a relief to get some guidance. I suspect mine aren’t getting enough sun. I originally sprouted them indoors, then moved them outside. Do you place your seed trays in direct morning sun immediately after sowing? Also, I am a bit confused about whether acuminatas require soil with low phosphorus. I was going to use native potting mix for this reason. Should I grow the seedlings in normal potting mix then transplant them to a native potting mix when they are larger? Or could I just sow them in native mix directly? Is your backyard soil low in phosphorus? I tried to find the NPK ratio of the baileys potting mix with no luck... I wonder if it’s low phosphorus? Unfortunately can’t plant them in the ground due to the constraints of my courtyard Many thanks for your help!! It is much appreciated!! -

What did you do in your sacred garden today?

Gave my caapi a haircut - it tends to fill up the entire trellis in 3-4 weeks. -
Did you notice the formation of any seed pods in your peruvian black type? Very curious to see whether my caapi can also self-pollinate.

Cared for my psychotrias (+ nepenthes ) which have been growing in a little greenhouse all spring and summer. These have been quite easy to care for as the soil is rich with earthworms and nutrients which they love. Make-shift ultrasonic humidifier (built for $18) saved them on 40+ degree days. This winter I plan to wrap the greenhouse with bubble-wrap & add a tube heater. -
Hi everyone, Hope your new year is going well so far and all your plants are thriving in this warm & humid(ish) summer! My Acacia acuminata (var small seed) seems to be struggling a lot - most of its leaves are drying out, turning orange/yellow and falling off. Just as the last few leaves fall out, it miraculously manages to produce one or two new green ones, before those end up drying out and falling off too. It doesn't seem to be able to retain any of its old leaves while simultaneously producing new ones. Any advice on what could be causing this & what I should do differently? A bit of info on its growing condition: 1. Grown outdoors in full morning & a bit of arvo sun in Sydney, Aus. 2. Its in a laundry basket with lots of holes cut out (air pruning). 3. Soil medium is cactus/succulent mix with perlite. Compost on top. 4. Soil dries out pretty quickly but I replenish it with moisture every one or two days. 5. Using a range of fertilizers, normally Seasol & Powerfeed, and sometimes Maxigrow - every week(ish) during spring/summer. 6. Plant was purchased in mid-Nov (looked healthy when it arrived). Any advice on how to grow this wonderful plant is much appreciated! Thank you

Hmm this article "Phosphorus and Iron Nutrition in Australian Native Plants" suggests a foliar spray/soil drench of iron chelate to rectify phosphorus toxicity - anyone have any experience with this? http://anpsa.org.au/APOL1/mar96-2.html
