Growing Acacias in extreme Southern Australia (i.e. south of Hobart)
andros88 replied to Rhyzobium's topic in Australian Native Plants
Great video Rhyzobium - cleared up a lot of uncertainty I had re how to best germinate & grow my acacias. Quick question - did you innoculate the acacia seeds after germination or before? -

Helicopter Joy Flights above Blue Mountains Heritage-listed National Park
andros88 posted a topic in News & Notices
Hi all, Apologies if this is the wrong place for this [mods please delete]. The Blue Mountains Heritage-listed national park is a tranquil environment for plants, animals and people alike to enjoy peace, quiet and solitude. This peace is being threatened with the potential commercialization of Katoomba Airfield which will subsequently allow for commercial scenic heli-charter flights or 'joy flights'. Currently the airfield is only used for emergency services. This will increase air traffic & noise, potentially disrupting native bird habitats, native wild-life and the like. If you enjoy meditating, foraging, bird-watching or simply enjoy the fresh air away from Sydney, please sign this petition to save our skies! : https://www.change.org/p/department-of-industry-crown-lands-and-water-save-our-skies-no-commercialisation-of-katoomba-airfield More info here: https://www.facebook.com/KatoombaAirfieldCommunityGroup https://www.katoombaairfieldcommunitygroup.org/?fbclid=IwAR0NlxTfU7CfBRzbx1niUJrn2b_gYvTJfmNKeP6BWGWQE1YTkcOWxvAmrLs-

@Average Joe As someone with mild depression I don't like being reliant on medication and hence started meditating. I found it to be an effective method because it allowed me to finally control my own mind (and not be a slave to my emotions and whatever random thought happens to pop by). If you have some moments to spare, I hope you give it a go. There are longer meditation retreats you can join if you think you'll be into it. At the end of the day, lots of people don't want to do it because its hard work. But I would take hard work & a controlled mind any day over the pain of depression.
-
Stay strong @Average Joe!! There are a lot of us in the same boat as you. Try to get away from rumination by focusing on your present moment, focus on your surroundings & body sensations, take things day-to-day, moment-to-moment. If you want to try a simple meditation (about 3 mins tho any longer helps) you can try: - Sit comfortably, on a cushion or chair. - Close your eyes. - Feel the sensation of your body sitting on the chair. (1 min) - Feel the sensation of your arms resting on your sides. (1 min) - Feel the sensation of your clothes resting on your body. (1 min) You may not find immediate relief but doing that daily will bring positive results over time. This is the crux of most "mindful" meditation methods (training your mind to be in the present moment rather than ruminating on bad thoughts which is either a harbinger or reinforcement of depression). The above is a suggestion for mild depression resulting from changes in personal circumstances (i.e. you are generally a person of sound mind and well being). Anyone with clinical depression should definitely seek professional help.

Hi everyone - I'm on the lookout for some ashwagandha dried root/powder grown locally in Australia. Most powders available online don't advise their source or are sourced from India. I've received some seeds from a very generous person on this forum, however, it'll take a decent while for them to grow to harvestable size. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated
-
Thanks Alchemica - I'll PM you!
-
Thanks LokStok - I'll contact the herbalist and see if they can sell me any root pieces. As to why not source them from India, pesticides frequently used in their agriculture are banned in most countries. The run-off seeps into the ground, may contaminate roots & there's recently been a spate of reports of farmers dying from pesticide poisoning (possibly from drinking well water no doubt). I'm fortunate enough to live in Australia where agricultural practices are substantially if not marginally better and would rather support my local economy instead

Can anyone help me identify these shrooms please? Found in the blue mountains today.

Healing through a community medicinal patch
andros88 replied to Alchemica's topic in Sustainable Technologies & Ethical Living
What a wonderful write up - thanks @Alchemica! I'd love to start a medicinal patch in my community one day. Do you need to get permission from your local council to start planting? -
My peruvianus had the same issue (yellow spotting) when I first received it. The spots kept multiplying until I cut them off. The new growth is healthy and doesn't have this issue. Still don't know what the yellow spots were tho - maybe some type of scale?
