    Newb over winter question

Interestingly my T.knuthianus (year old cutting that was slow as to root and grow) seems to be growing and bulking up real nice outdoors still. All whilst the others seem to show little growth at all. We've had plenty of sub zero as you know. I read they had a rep for cold tolerance, now i see why.

    Loph issue help

Hi been meaning to ask for a while about one of my lophs. The scarring was present before id grafted 5 weeks ago it to the T.sp ( it was on peres). As its grown into the new graft the scarring seemingly hasn't continued to expand. So i was hoping to grow it out so to speak. Good idea? What would've happened to cause it? Nibbled, fungal? Peace H
  6. Here last years survivors after losing about 70-80% to severe frost. Ive recently moved closer to the beach so am hoping for milder frost conditions combined with a years growth am hoping for better results. They're keen to get in the ground. Thanks again Gimli

    Newb over winter question

Ive got a year or so of growing cacti so Ive only done one winter, so in someways dont feel over qualified to answer. But, I'll tell you what im up to. Dont concern yourself with light hours. I feel stomta would be open on a clear sunny Tas winter day for sure. Last year i felt some growth still occurred over winter in a sunny window of a shed that got cold at night. Anything without roots i would think indoors and some filtered light is ok. This year all my established cacti are outside undercover getting 6 or 7 good hours of sun. Some water too but its getting rarer. My seedlings are in the house in a sunny position. The seedlings are definitely growing quite quickly and require watering weekly. Seedlings are more susceptible to cold and can go various shades of purple. Seems some varieties are more susceptible than others. They may spout a mini pup come spring or eventually green up, most dont die but it does slow growth. Best you go indoors if possible for seedlings, mine tolerate the dryness of the wood fire.

    takeaway tek alternatives

Im a wrap for the take away tek, heres my 2cents. Wipe NEW containers/lids well with isopropyl, paying some attention to the lip of the lid, get in that groove. Sadly recycled containers that once contained chinese food seem to stay a little greasy no matter how you clean them. Ive also found that other containers you might get food in (ie cheese) dont seal airtight. NO, holes for breathing or drainage.....airtight. I normally just use seed raising mix, you want something that will hold a little water. 20mm or so high and tamped down with something flat that you've sterilized. Dont be tempted to overdo the water. I reckon about 30mls for a round container as a starting point. It should look like your soil is only 1/2 wet (not pooling in the bottom). After a few goes you can judge by weight. Sprinkle in seeds next (after watering) and close the lid, taking care to not touch the inside surfaces of the lid or bottom. Put in a window with filtered light. DONT open them, you'll be surprised how easily algae can form if you do. It varies but id average about 4-6 months before putting into trays.
  10. Thanks very much Gimli, recieved a chocca's pack of seed. Assuming they were from your giveaway?? Was a wonderful surprise mate.

    Rapeh

Hi, can anyone point me towards where i can purchase some rapeh? Due to lockdowns in Peru and elsewhere o/s post wont be able to get through for some time. The one local Aust supplier i know of is of course out, and some in the US and NL are way too pricey. Any suggestions appreciated?

    Visitation by birds

To me birds seem the first to be different with lock down and few people around. Like they've reverted back to their own dreaming without humanity to observe and exploit. A different vibe for sure. This morning i saw a Sea Eagle, tonight a Nightjar both just on the side of the road. Very cool. Forest Ravens seem to be gathering in larger numbers too, less road kill to go around i guess.

    Giveaway competition 2020

Hey, this loph was my 1st ever graft. It took a while to get growing as id misaligned it a bit. Then it got sunburnt. Nowdays its pumping, and the stock has swelled tight as a tiger. Its a weiss bluete i scored from WB. The other pic is Eddie the 15 yo senile sausage dog. I found him dumped in a caravan park in Goondahwindi, he was only 6 weeks or so old and in quite poor health. His hobbies are eating and going for walks, when he's not its whinging about not eating or going for a walk. He's also known as Mr Peabody, Bodytight and Tighty amonst other less complimentary names.

Can people become immune to shrooms over time?

IME a lot of folks described as having ASD are on medications for behavioral reasons. Not a rebuttal though. If it were true it would make an interesting research topic as we don't yet understand much of the neurology behind autism.

    don't cha hate it when..

Saw this blast from the past and thought id update the sitch: After what seems to be an eternity (18 months) on Weds i finally moved into my own place. Been a rough, bizzare ride but im semi free. In endless twists and turns she ended up growing tired of her OS affair before said girl could get a visa. Now she feels as manipulated as i. She moved onto another poor soul 2 days after booting miss Philippines out.. Felt sorry for her. The ex has taken the Trump stance on truth and to her it never happened. To rub salt into the wound my dad died and she took a large chunk of my inheritance. Grrr. Twas a cacti that showed me she has BPD (boarderline personality disorder). Once realizing that i started to gain ground again and make sense of things. Not to forget the other plants like acacia and friends which have been immensely helpful via there healing and insights. Can honestly say i wouldnt have made it without them. Still she's a dangerous liason as someone who cant feel guilt or empathy is. But im free from exposure to the daily lies and abuse but whilst the kids are young i dont have a choice but to be consilaratory. I play confidant mostly, keep your enemies closer type thing. Ironically i think I'm a much better person for it, more mature, less ego, stronger, wiser and kinder. Heartfelt thanks to everyone who pm'd me support at that difficult time, sincerely it helped. Kindness and trust. H

    New to cactus

Hi Zonad, im not long at it myself but Id be right in saying the best way to learn is get growing. Heres a few things ive gleened: Pick yourself up some seeds while at it. They're cheap as chips. Maybe check out the SAB store or I recommend https://www.shaman-australis.com/forum/index.php?/topic/46520-2019-trichocereus-australia-seed-list/ Then grab some new take away plastic containers, wipe them out with isopropyl and do this: https://herbalistics.com.au/takeaway-tek-how-to-germinate-cacti-seeds/ (I wouldnt microwave, iso is good) Once you've got your head into that have a read of teos excellent grafting book pinned above in this topic https://www.shaman-australis.com/forum/index.php?/topic/15495-grafting-book/ I also found @Inyan's parafilm vids very helpful too. http://www.shaman-australis.com/forum/index.php?/topic/45521-grafting-trichocereus-pallarensis-seedlings-using-parafilm-another-instructional-video/ If you like PM me an address for some seedlings and a little periskiopsis to get you going. Peace
