    Hi SAB folks, Fucking strange days, Given many of us are lockdown indefinitely,  do consider having a Zoom Plant meet this month to catch up and shoot the shit? Is anyone interested?

    We were not expecting this, however, we have reopened and extended our fundraiser campaign until Sunday night. 

     

    We decided to do this after we had a couple of folks contact us that still wished to offer support to our charity. Big thanks to the Shaman Australis botanicals (www.shaman-australis.com.au) for their recent generous donation. Anyway if you are one of the folks that wanted to sneak in a late donation and support the work of EGA now's your chance.

    Title - Australian Psilocybe and their Lookalikes Synopsis

     

    While the Genus Psilocybe in Australia, is represented by few formally defined species, there are comparatively many more look-alike species. Many of them are poisonous, some can cause liver or kidney damage, some deadly. Being able to identify the lookalikes as well as the desired mushroom goes a long way to increasing your own safety and being able to help friends identify theirs.     Bio - Caine Barlow

    Caine Barlow is a fungi educator who has been cultivating and studying fungi for 13 years. In 2019 he completed a Master's degree where his research project was to predict a preliminary conservation status for many Australian fungi.

     

    As a fungi educator, he is passionate about encouraging people to see fungi in a new light by demonstrating how easy they are to grow in kitchen and garden environments.

     

    He likes to inspire a sense of creativity in the cloning and propagation of mycelium, experimentation with different substrates, and how to hack together equipment.

     

    Through exploring the forests of Far South Tasmania, Caine's interest in fungi evolved from foraging to learning how to culture native species for conservation, and on to cultivating a variety of culinary and medicinal species. Then to further studies into mycorrhizal fungi, mycoremediation, and mycorestoration.

     

    When not growing fungi, Caine volunteers his time with MYCOmmunity applied mycology, and Fungimap. He is also a regular contributor, “trusted identifier” and administrator on a variety of fungi oriented website forums and facebook groups. Caine has an Instagram account "Guerrilla Mycology” where he blogs about his cultivation techniques and the ethnomycology of fungi he finds in the field.

    We are releasing the first talk in a new series taken from our recent Garden States Microdose Livestream. Caine Barlow's talk titled 'Australian Psilocybe and their Lookalikes' received a great deal of positive feedback.     Hi Wile E. Peyote yes thanks for tuning in and your feedback. I agree Caine's talk was a highlight, I will try and update the edit slightly so you can see all the slides.

     

    Nick and I had to work out of seperate houses on the day due to the COVID issue, so it made it all a little harder than we hoped at the last minute. Nick and I are just getting our heads around the Livestream software, etc.   

     

    I think the other questions are answered in the above post Humboldt & Cimi, basically, we're working to get most of the days content up online asap. 

     

    Good news is, Nick and I are talking about doing a small Livestream once a month until our next conference. Just a small one to two hours show on a weekenight, but more on this if and when it happens.

    We’d like to send a massive thank you to all the contributors, our host, Nick Wallis, and everyone that tuned into EGA’s first livestream event. It was a big day and we covered a lot of ground across many important disciplines related to ethnobotanical plants, fungi, ecology and psychedelic therapy and culture. 

     

    The campaign concludes tomorrow so if you can, please support EGA, pick up a perk or two, and be a part of this community project starter. We’re sending out good energy and appreciation to everyone who has supported the campaign so far. Thanks again for helping make everything possible and let’s keep sharing ethnobotanical seeds of knowledge into the future!

     

    We are trying to make sure the content can be accessed via Entheo TV. Sadly, we have a 10-second copyright issue as part of the 10 hour programming. As the Livestream went over 6 hours, we have trouble editing and removing the unforeseen problem. We might need to upload the elements separately and delete the issue to get this all publicly available. So look out for that in the coming days. Thanks again for tuning in on the day.

    Keynote guest Dennis McKenna 

     

     

     

     

     

      

     

     

     

     

     

    Dennis McKenna's research has focused on the interdisciplinary study of Amazonian ethnopharmacology. He has conducted extensive ethnobotanical fieldwork in the Peruvian Amazon.  His doctoral research (University of British Columbia,1984) focused on the ethnopharmacology of ayahuasca and oo-koo-he, two tryptamine-based hallucinogens used by indigenous peoples in the Northwest Amazon.  He is a founding board member of the Heffter Research Institute and serves on the advisory board of non-profit organizations in the fields of ethnobotany and botanical medicines.   

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

    He is the younger brother of Terence McKenna.   From 2000 to 2017, he taught courses on Ethnopharmacology and Plants in Human affairs in the Center for Spirituality and Healing at the University of Minnesota. In 2019, in collaboration with colleagues, he incorporated a new non-profit, the McKenna Academy of Natural Philosophy.  He emigrated to Canada in the spring of 2019 together with his wife Sheila, and now resides in Abbotsford, B.C.     Sadly, due to COVID-19, EGA has postponed the 2020 ethnobotanical symposium Garden States. In the meantime, however, we're running a free Livestream, 'Garden States Microdose'.
