  1. Old, grey spine clusters sprouting fresh spines (in yellow, too, which also seems uncharacteristic) right down near the base of this seed-grown Peruvianus. Unusual, in my experience.

  2. What's the diagnosis? SSRIs are only marginally better than placebo for depression, with their own host of depressive complications such as suicidal ideation. But I was on various SSRIs for several years, and once upon a time, an MAOI anti-depressant. I can't vouch for any of them. I ditched SSRIs so that I could pursue psychedelics as a therapy instead. San Pedro is a powerful ally.

Omega 3 from plant sources would be preferable to marine sources. Farmed salmon contain very low levels, compared with wild. Contamination (pesticides, PFAS, heavy metals, plastics) is definitely a concern. Apparently the Omega-3 in fish comes from algae, in any case. Maybe something like Spirulina, which has an Omega-6 to Omega-3 ratio of 1.6:1? Walnuts, hemp seed, flax seed, chia seed ...

Vitamin D is a useful supplement across the board, including for brain/gut health which is essential to dopamine production. Or make your own Vitamin D, from sun exposure. Good luck finding a vegan Vitamin D supplement (only one local brand that I'm aware of that isn't sourced from lanolin).

Some form of counselling is probably advised for survivors of emotional abuse. It's difficult to find a suitable mental healthcare professional. And it's not cheap (even the GP consultation to devise a Medicare-funded mental healthcare plan can be prohibitively costly). But even a free service like Lifeline is pretty good value, in a pinch. And there would be other free services in their local area, but they would have to seek them out.

  3. Consider this a no-reserve auction. Whoever bids highest will receive this splendid Jourdaniana graft (on PC rootstock).

All proceeds will be donated to offset the costs of Corroboree website/forum maintenance. Auction is open for bids until the end of next week (April 18). Please indicate below how much you're willing to pay for this fine specimen.

    * Flower is indicative only, from a comparable grafted specimen. Props to Trip for the mother of all scions!

  4. Mine is old enough to have woody stems, which is what I cut. I don't know that fertiliser is strictly necessary, just noticed that mine responded well to an application of liquid fertiliser. And that it dislikes the hot afternoon sun. I grow mine in large containers, but these still dry out in summer, and the foliage wilts. So I'll be moving mine back to an afternoon-shaded position.

  5. I think mine could be a different variety. They like water, and food, and some shade. It's normal for the leaves to desiccate and brown on the bush.

Once a year I'll prune it back, hard. Otherwise it gets pretty lanky.

  6. 33 minutes ago, Starward said:

His last meal consisted of Pork OR possible Mushrooms, and within a few days, the Buddha died.

Strange to think that Buddha could have died from eating poisonous mushrooms: https://www.dhammawiki.com/index.php/Diet_of_Buddha

Pork (of all animal products) seems unlikely. "Pigs' truffles," maybe. There is of course a more recent Buddhist innovation of deliberately breaking all rules and taboos, even those of Buddhist tradition, as a means of spiritual liberation. Sleeping in graveyards, eating at Maccas, etc.

  7. For some reason Netflix took issue with this (but only this) Kip Andersen documentary -- his others all being certified Netflix hits.

I like to think that some religious folks would be persuaded by its argument, or at least give animal rights some thought. I don't think a vegan Jesus is a particularly good (i.e. falsifiable) hypothesis -- but compelling "food for thought." Religious people are inherently conservative, alas.

My family probably won't watch this, just as they refuse to watch Dominion. I don't blame them either. The first few minutes of Dominion was more than enough for me. I'm not sure what kind of person watches Seaspiracy and then continues to eat industrial seafood. A very hungry one, perhaps.

Señor Wilson Robles had the following to say, in Christspiracy:

    Quote

I dedicate myself to the path of Ayahuasca, sharing the experience of life with everyone, to discover consciousness. When it comes to spiritual ceremonies, they are not compatible with meat. Not at all. Because meat is energetically dense. It blocks the ethereal. It ties you down. It doesn't allow you to liberate. ... Some say "I've asked [God] for permission to kill the animal." But, you didn't hear what the animal said. ...

Veganism is not a philosophy. It's not a doctrine. It's a state of consciousness. Your body and your mind begin to elevate, spiritually and energetically, with existence, life, and the universe ... with all.

  8. Our original streaming partner demanded we redact key information from the film, which took seven years and over a million dollars to produce. After boldly buying our film rights back, and creating this independent platform, Christspiracy is now freely accessible and uncensored.

Provocative documentary on spiritual traditions, ecology and animal rights.

  9. Abandoned beehive. I kept a thriving productive colony for last 6 years or so, until the hive was abandoned this past summer. My best guess is that removal of neighbouring vegetation exposed the hive to intense afternoon sun which proved too hot for the bees. But I'll never know for sure. My beekeeping supplier told me to clean the boxes and fill it with a new colony. But I'm only a renter with uncertain tenancy. So I'm looking for someone to take over the hive and start anew. These are 8-frame boxes with frames, base and gabled roof with inner lid, queen excluder, beekeeping equipment, everything you need minus the bees. Message me if interested.

  10. Trichocereus odds and sods, free to good home. Melbourne pickup, or I can post (bare-rooted) at your expense.

Smaller ones are seed-grown (lost label) left over from grafting experiments. Good mix of unique genetics.

Clones include knuthianus, sausage, lost label pachanoi, 3 x forms of bridgesii.

    No issues, other than neglect.

  11. I have mixed feelings about activism too (from experience). What I meant, primarily, in this context, is mounting an application to the TGA for re-scheduling. But that involves SWIM with technical expertise, as regards toxicity. This is an application process that occurs very much "behind the scenes." I think in the US it was a case of kratom users successfully petitioning government, but I doubt that the TGA would be open to that kind of influence. They have a very particular application form for re-scheduling poisons, most of which I could probably complete myself. But there's a section that needs some hard data on toxicity. I guess the form is usually completed by someone wanting to bring kratom products to the therapeutic goods market. Someone at the TGA recommended this pathway to me. I had tried for a FOI request of TGA correspondence on the kratom scheduling, but they put a hefty price tag on that request. If they're totally captive to Big Pharma and synthetic opioids, there's not much point completing the application for re-scheduling. But, you never know. Might be worth a shot.

Wikipedia entry on kratom is hilarious, by the way. Outdated information to suggest it really is the scourge of human society. But neither WHO or DEA views kratom as a drug of concern, these days.

  12. Hmm. Good question. I mean, "ambient music" (according to Eno) could be anything listened to at an appropriate volume level. And all music -- under the influence of psychedelics -- could be considered psychedelic. I've got a few albums that have been personally rewarding, but am curious to know what others feel/think. I'd love to know what go-to albums others might care to recommend. Any memorable listening experiences? (Disclaimer: I find generic "psychedelic" mixes or albums to be counter-productive: it's hard to program a psychedelic experience in advance. But if they work for you, let's know).

  13. And the paper he's referring to ... https://www.bmj.com/content/377/bmj.o1538

Of the six regulators, Australia had the highest proportion of budget from industry fees (96%) and in 2020-2021 approved more than nine of every 10 drug company applications. Australia’s Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) firmly denies that its almost exclusive reliance on pharmaceutical industry funding is a conflict of interest (COI). In response to a query, the agency said, “All fees and charges are prescribed in our legislation. To provide transparency, the TGA fees and charges are published on the TGA website.”

But for decades academics have raised questions about the influence funding has on regulatory decisions, especially in the wake of a string of drug and device scandals—including opioids, Alzheimer’s drugs, influenza antivirals, pelvic mesh, joint prostheses, breast and contraceptive implants, cardiac stents, and pacemakers.4567An analysis of three decades of PDUFA in the US has shown how a reliance on industry fees is contributing to a decline in evidentiary standards, ultimately harming patients.8 In Australia, experts have called for a complete overhaul of the TGA’s structure and function, arguing that the agency has become too close to industry.

Sociologist Donald Light of Rowan University in New Jersey, US, who has spent decades studying drug regulation, says, “Like the FDA, the TGA was founded to be an independent institute. However, being largely funded by fees from the companies whose products it is charged to evaluate is a fundamental conflict of interest and a prime example of institutional corruption.”
