    Help! What causes this damage

If you check the wiki link - it has a picture of a product called spiritus, sounds like it must be the same product yes?

    Help! What causes this damage

I've been recommended a product called Verdex which appears to be safe for use on edible fruit. https://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&q=cache:QEe7jv3WNIUJ:www.adriacp.co.nz/Technical%2520Brochures/Verdex%252018EC%2520Technical%2520Guide.pdf+verdex&hl=en&gl=nz&pid=bl&srcid=ADGEESiNgWYlgms9lgW9W73j0R242k9aiakIZQm2xbYe6twVLDsl0R6weiASeOU00SaWGyYy6UwY0yAQCIBhTU631YyCXlThrJC_D-YNyFdjFLhbdvZaNiFPAOrWwIfTyzODhUqYd4zQ&sig=AHIEtbRrnN1Sk0PmrcZ97YymvPs8ii64DQ might see if I can source that in a small quantity

    Help! What causes this damage

Thanks EG. No, it doesn't rub off. I have unpotted the affected plants and soaked with water for 30 minutes. They are currently drying off. Is this what you mean by spiruts? http://en.wikipedia....natured_alcohol If so it goes by the name methylated spirits over here. With regard to spraying it - do you spray it on the plant above the soil? The roots? The surface of the soil? Thanks so much for your help!

    Crest ID!

Another vote for notocactus here. I've seen spines vary in length and number, but not the 'consistency' of the spine when it comes to the difference between crested and normal plants. Anything's possible though ;) p.s. you have an awesome mrs as stated above!
  5. I dunno but I've got something with similar wispy spines. I reckon mine's a notocactus magnificus monstrose. I'd post a pic but I'm really embarrased that I let it get monstered by snails

    Groundcovers with Trichs

I agree, it's therapeutic. I use gloves and needle-nose pliers for my weeding.
  7. Hey dude, as mentioned in PM, I'm keen as a bean

    Some new arrivals!!

I reckon the Agave is Agave parryi - over here they sell for stupid prices when they get to 30cm across. Good score.
  9. Yeah, sorry I have like zero experience with fungicides myself (much less with lophs given their legality over here), but I'm sure other members here have used them as I remember reading stuff about how to deal with rotting/damaged plants - hence my advice.

$58 US variegated TBM pup ebay.com WTF

Sure is a lot, I get hassled quite a bit for having too many. I've had to resort to collecting only very rare and small ones now so I can sneek them in without it being obvious! haha. Here are some pics of the very first ones I got, back on 2006/01/09 http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v441/evobit/Plants/158_5850.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v441/evobit/Plants/159_5913_lo.jpg You can see them now in the background against the windows at 1:10 in the vid. Well over 6 foot
  11. Welcome to the forum! Your peruvianus might be the Australian T. knuthianus - I've never owned it so can't be sure, but it resembles the other photos of knuthianus on this forum. As for your mother loph - it looks like it needs some serious intervention. I would be looking for a fungicide / insecticide to submerge it in for 30 minutes or so. Then let it thourougly dry out in warm dry conditions, and plant in fresh soil. You definitely need to get rid of the ants as a first step.

$58 US variegated TBM pup ebay.com WTF

Cheers man, if you're talking about the other yellow one, it's a Bridgsii variegata though, not a peru. I haven't seen var. Peru in NZ

$58 US variegated TBM pup ebay.com WTF

I have one ;) Check out my bit's garden video to catch a glimpse http://vimeo.com/32728826 I can't remember how much I paid for it - definitely less than $50 though. When I got it it was only slightly yellowish, I wasn't sure if it was variegated. I need to try grafting a pup - it's extremely slow growing.
  14. I transplanted a P* cutting into a new pot ready to be given to a friend, and propogated my mother P* plant into 4 pieces. I'll give it a couple of days then plant the cuttings. Damn the spines on that thing are fine and a pest! I also potted up some monstrose opuntia thingy that had fallen over, going to take that into work to grow on the window ledge :D

    Cacti Roofing

I want to see updated pics of this in 3-5 years time.. I reckon either the roof will collapse or it'll be looking pretty average.
  16. Their natural habitat is shade isn't it? I would definitely recommend shade cloth for the hot hours of the day at least.
  17. Pulled a couple of weeds and cut a piece off for Bluntmuffin
  18. Good advice above. I germinate my seeds with regular store-bought cactus mix. I use a flour sifter to get a 2-3mm layer of really fine mix on the top, and put the seeds on top of the fine layer. Works like a charm for me.

    Should It Be This Colour?

Cactus looks fine to me, the pebbles however, are not growing well. The colour the pebbles are turning says it all.
  20. Hey guys Does anyone have any growing tips for this cactus? Can it tolerate the same conditions as Trichs? If anyone in Auckland is interested, CC have a few for between $20 and $30 in their retail shop. Cheers
  21. Argentinensis is a debatable clone, this is ID'd by myself based on internet pictures of the plant, not the flower (haven't seen any flower pics online). This plant was acquired as a mid section cutting from faslimy - the cutting is FAAT, but the pups (pictured) are not so fat. It's in the ground but not receiving maximum light as it's behind a fence. Will be interesting to see how it goes with regard to fatness in full sun.
  22. Michael, you bring into dispute the ID of virtually every Tricho in NZ and other countries. For simplicity's sake, if a plant in someone's collection looks like what is regarded as the correct/accurate specimen of a particular clone, then it should be regarded as such until proven otherwise. There is no sense in inventing new names for plants which are practically identical to those with an ID elsewhere.
  23. Thanks guys. Michael, this plant is unique in my collection, and the most similar plant I've seen is Argentensis. Here's a photo of the new growth showing the same intense blue and very similar spination to yours. The flower is markedly different to pachanoi, and slightly different to peruvianus (as you would expect).. I don't want to get into an id debate as they go nowhere. Suffice to say this is similar enough to Argentinensis to be dubbed as such, and I'm not really in favour of creating my own clone names if I didn't grow it from seed or sure of it's origins.
  24. Video is below, and I thought you might like a look at the setup (see attached pic) In the pic you will see my laptop, running windows 8 (not that it really matters), tethered to the camera via USB. Camera is a canon eos 5dii, and the capture software is the canon eos utility. Laptop is running off mains power via extension lead to house, cam is running on battery, I'll have to keep an eye on the battery level, have.a spare charged up just in case. The cam was set to Av mode to let it automatically deal with the fading evening light, Shutter is actuating every 20 seconds. Shutter speed varied as the light dropped off, maxing at about 14 seconds.
