I have a mate who's been in for infusion therapy to help reduce his dependence on opioids after long term use (from a debilitating injury, not by choice). You're in a hospital setting, and get drip fed ketamine, I think it ramps up to 12mg/kg of body weight per hour, and the treatment goes for more than 24 hours. He described the whole thing as an ordeal, being holed out for a day is pretty challenging. Helped him a lot though, didn't need any opioids for more than 3 months this afterwards. Can't really say if it did much for depression cos he's a pretty upbeat bloke despite the chronic pain. I can ask specifically if you want me to.

Torsten just posted this, please take note! Urgent harm minimisation alert! I have just been made aware that there is a cluster of poppy seed poisonings caused by Hoyts poppy seeds (from woolies). One patient who was tested was found to have little morphine but large amounts of thebaine in their blood. Hospitalised after just 120g of poppy wash. It appears toxic thebaine poppy seeds have entered the food distribution network with dire consequences. This is probably not limited to Hoyts. Please share widely.

Articles on ABC today did mention D.strammonium, but I guess outside circles like ours, common names are more likely to be remembered than Linnaean nomenclature.

I recently sent some non prohibited seeds to a mate in ye olde delta of Venus and they were seized. Seems like a lot of quarantine agents are using the "throw the seeds out first,ask questions later" philosophy

Yeah sent this to a member yesterday. I have no doubt this response in Tas has virtually zero to do with public health concern, and almost everything to do with the fact that they don't want their Norman strain production fields contaminated with rogue papaver pollen.

Migraines. I had them from the age of about 9 until 13 regularly, like every 6 weeks. Completely debilitating. After that age, rarely. I've had maybe a handful in the last 36 years. No, I never had regular access to mushrooms while I was experiencing them, and I haven't had a migraine in probably at least 10 years now.

Interesting to hear you can now get it OTC. About 25 years ago I used to get it prescribed, and my doctor used to have to call to get special permission to even prescribe it. It was bout $50 for two tabs back then. It feels a bit like the come up on mushrooms or acid, not surprising as it's psilocybin analog.

NSW health, after much badgering from Torsten and others, have finally updated the alert advice and issued a product recall for all Hoyts poppy seeds.

The wording of their press release is likely to cause more harm. Because they dont mention Thebaine as the rogue alkaloid, their press release might be interpreted to mean there are batches of seeds that are stronger than usual for other alkaloids and people might seek these out.

The advice from NSW health has been terrible, they stated seeds are safe to consume once cooked, this is definitely not true. Thebaine will not be destroyed by cooking temperature.

Store bought seeds are often viable. Clearly something very wrong has occurred in supplying these seeds for food.

This is becoming a disaster, there are people in ICU and even more in emergency wards, please do not consume anything with poppy seed at the moment, even cakes etc. There are people in ICU and more turning up in emergency all the time. Thebaine poisoning is likely from all poppyseed products right now.

While there is still major stigma and lack of available support for people with opiate/opioid dependencies, it remains one of the options available that is affordable and keeps people away from dealers and possible legal troubles. Generally, high thebaine strains are closely protected due to patents, so it's not expected for them to enter food chains. This is why harm minimisation is so important.

I was more concerned about the potential incrimination of people requesting material that is illegal to procure or possess. Acacias in general are fast growing species, quick to mature. Exceptions are localised endemic populations susceptible to pressures that would not bother widespread species. Always remember the first rule of SAB club: dont fucking incriminate yourself, that includes requests for material that is not legal to possess, even if the cultivation of the same live species is entirely legitimate.
