    Turbinicarpus...?

You got it mate....Mammillaria Those ones always have me scratching my head alittle, got 3 or 4 of them, but I think it might be M. magnimamma or M. karwinskiana
  2. Lucky find indeed, especially as I don't think I've ever seen it as picked out as it is right now! Did have one more peru on the bench that I left behind, one is enough for me. Funny though that I have been going out there for ages and never knew they sold diatomite! Here's the "score".
  3. Good tip there trichoshaman! Just went out to Hamiltons and got me a bag of diatomite, should last me months! And couldn't walk past a 30cm T. peru for a measly $15!

What did you do to your cacti today?

I'm going to bite the bullet here and water mine as soon as the sun has set, don't want to do it while it's still blazing away on the new bed. Everything in pots got a soak the other day. Never really watered cacti in after repotting, usually leave them a week or so for any root damage to heal before I water them just to be on the safe side. So I can't really say if it's a good or bad thing, it's just what I've read and been recommended through other forums.

Just "Welcome to my garden", guess the wife couldn't find a "Welcome to the insanity" sign!

I didn't even consult her, my cacti patch my choice ;) Though she knows that if I scorch these to death I'll just have to buy new ones! Lol

What did you do to your cacti today?

Still debating if I should water or not as it's less than a week since I planted them out. Any damage to the roots would still be open and could potentially cause rot. Might turn on the sprinklers for a few minutes after sundown to give the bed a gentle soak.

More shade for the cacti, not as organised or pretty as Getafix's sollution but it should take the bite out of the afternoon sun. Insect screen gives about 30% block. Still worried what the soil temp will do to the roots, recorded 64C when it was clear blue skies the other day. With today's patchy clouds it's a tad less on the surface.

What did you do to your cacti today?

Hit 41 in the shade under the awning here today, had to erect some more temporary little shade huts for cacti outdoors and one Copiapoa that's been in full sun for months still got burnt What grade shadecloth did you use Getafix? Looks like I'll have to put some up to protect plants even on the benches!

What did you do to your cacti today?

Here's what the heat just before christmas did to one of my plants, it was already hardened after more than a year outside but I had to take it out of the ground about 2 months back when I started building the new bed = 2 months unpotted and in shade. Spent the day planting in the lot I arranged up yesterday, to hungover this morning to get up and do it early so stupid me did it under midday sun One of them started showing signs of sunburn so I gave it a little personal sun shelter in the form of insect screen, some wire and a couple of rocks to hold it down.

    nice

I've been thinking about using a square of insectscreen combined with some of those outdoors clip on tablecloth weights you can find in any dollar shop.

What did you do to your cacti today?

I kept the plants I'm putting outside under full sun but also under temporary shade using insect screen for about a month now to harden them off, still going to be keeping a close eye on them in the coming days though.

What did you do to your cacti today?

Positioned all the plants for the outdoors bed in preparation for getting planted in first thing in the morning. And realised I had to many plants picked out for the space so I had to take some out, mainly giant growing species like T. pasacana, T. terscheckii, T. candicans and Parodia schumanniana. Still likely going to be seriously overcrowded in a year or 3 I'd say.

What did you do to your cacti today?

Finally a pup on my TBM that doesn't start at the outset of winter, came with just 2 "segments"...sent 1 pup out in at the start of winter the first year I had it. Then sat without doing a thing over summer. Sent another 2 pups out at the onset of last winter, stunted their growth too. Now finally an offset that might turn into something!

A few cacti, Id help please

Cacti 3 I'd call Mammillaria compressa, got one growing away in an outdoors bed here and it's pupping like mad. With riht conditions it will given time form a large clump of heads.

What did you do to your cacti today?

Wish the neighbours cat that comes in at night and uses my cactus patch for a toilet would end up like that possum! Might teach it a valuable lesson! Transplanted 5foot worth of C. peruvians from old bed into the new one, likely take over the whole thing once it's established some new roots but atleast where it is now it won't grow into the neighbours yard. Rest of the plants will be put in over christmas as I managed to score a 5 day weekend next week

    The Random Thread.

Seen photos of that done with Mammillaria spinosissima, although that was planted out the bottom of a regular terracotta pot.

What did you do to your cacti today?

Not just today but done over the last few days. Finished adding crushed stuff and some regular potting mix to the new bed, built up some "temporary" rock structures and put some of the plants I removed from the temporary bed back in. Holding off on putting any more plants in untill I've transplated a C. peruvians from another bed into this new one. Here's the victim in question. Going to be a fun job as it's wedged into that corner and I really don't want to disturb the plants around it more than what I absolutely have to, plus I'm going to have to attempt it all on my lonesome

I've got away with a similar although not as big one at JB a few years ago. Looking at portable harddrives as I needed a new one I spotted the odd one out on the shelf. 1Tb USB/Firewire drive marked and barcoded the same as the 750Gb USB only drives, instant score at $149 instead of $249 And walked out of, very quickly mind you, Dick Smith with 20% off a new plasma TV during a staff sales day as both the guy down the back and the girl at the checkout scanned my employee discount card

    Cactus ID

I'd call that a Cereus of some sort, naked buds is a dead giveaway.

What did you do to your cacti today?

Shifted 1.5 tonnes of sandy loam by wheelbarrow to fill the new back gardenbed, 3 hours of solid backbreaking work! Going to mix in a dozen or so bags of scoria tomorrow to improve drainage. Bloody better turn out to be a good place for the plants with all this effort put in! Edit: just for shit and giggles I had the timelapse camera up to record the event, here's the result...like watching paint dry! http://youtu.be/QKM4rzOF_oE

    A few ID's needed

Possibly, but I think they might just be different subspecies. 2 would be M. decipiens ssp decipiens 4 would be M decipiens ssp camptotricha

    A few ID's needed

2 and 4: Mammillaria decipiens 3: Tephrocactus articulatus
  24. Snowfella

    Help wih two ID's please.

I'd agree on those 2. Love to get my hands on P. marginatus but haven't been able to find it anywhere here down in Sydney. Well, I've found plants but none that is for sale that is.

    A series of identifications

Think you have an Ocotillo there too in the one that looks Euphorbia but isn't.
