unknown cacti maybe a Trich ID

it does have some segmentation in the columns so I guess it is a cereus, but uncommon for my area anyway. I'll have to get a photo of the mother.
  2. I have collected some cacti pollen I think I will be using in a couple weeks (just waiting for a flower to open). Should I put it in the fridge till then or will it be right in a cool dark place?
  3. I am putting a few cacti grafts under lights and want to raise a few seedlings while experimenting with canna based hydroponics I have a 60 watt cfl bulb that puts out about 4000 to 5000 lumens and gives off pretty good heat. Is this about ball park for cacti Has anyone got any pics of there own set ups?

unknown cacti maybe a Trich ID

I have no I dea what it is but the mother plant has been there for a very long time. Probably around the mid seventies I was told. Its a bit more unusual than the big cereus you see around Brisbane normally.
  6. cool thanks for the info PH I have noticed two of the scions look like they have bonded well and the other two not so sure, will keep a photo log none the less. thanks again Mick

    Growing cacti under lights

This is my set up its in an IKEa cupboard 60 watt cfl puts out about 5000 lumens roughly. Dosn't get to hot running 18 hours of light. I have another box similiar set up am thinking about putting on shorter light period to see if I can force flowering? should be interesting.

    Growing cacti under lights

I'll give it a go, I am a bit worried about heat and humidity but will give it a run Photos to come in the next few weeks.
  10. I'll keep you posted I also live close to a lot of wild prickly pear was thinking about trying some of that too, but its so nasty to handle.
  11. Do you think I should have shortened the stock a bit? for next time?
  12. I have a few cacti in the collection I'm not sure of hoping someone might know what I have. I never seen these two before? 1 2 Trich species? 3 4 and a possible Gynocalycium denudatum hybrid or strain the flowers look like they may be yellow on this one. 5
  13. Some of my favourite cacti. If anyone has other Gymnocalycium sp for trade or sale pm me please. Not sure if this first one is a hybrid or not

    Some of my favourite specimens

Moses how do the red seedlings go? They must have enough "green" in them to survive without grafting? That is cool as I will have to try that. I'm going to cross my G mihanovichi with something too dunno what or which yet maybe G quinelium or G baldianum.

    Some of my favourite specimens

http://www.gargamel-cactus.com/photos/album81?page=2 found this and thought it was a really useful tool in recognising Gymno sp.

    Some of my favourite specimens

Does anyone have a any idea which Gymnos are self pollinating as I have a few specimens developing flowers, I think I would like to do some experiments with grafting these guys as they are so hardy, I read G gibbosum was self polinating? what about G baldianum or G mihanovichii? or denedatum for that matter? Sorry for so many Qs hahah am a bit curious to mess around with a few crosses as well. I'll look up a few things on pollinating cacti flowers as well.

    Grafting cacti

Have been experimenting with grafting using this cacti does anyone know the species, we have access to a specimen that is about a metre and a half tall and have attempted grafting Gynocalycium , Echinopsis and Lobivia species to it with good results so far. I figure its a bit of a weed really.

    Grafting cacti

I don't think its prickly pear but I think its Opuntia sp the spines aren't as fine and nasty as a prickly pear and the diameter of these guys is about 2cm at top end also they aren't really paddled ie not so flat. I'll take some pics of muy grafts and a few more of the above plant.

    Raised Garden Bed

the bunnings one looks like a treated pine product anyway.
  23. Stillman

    Raised Garden Bed

Well you don't have to use treated pine its just cheaper and convenient to work with as its not too heavy and due to the fact its treated it won't be eaten by white ants.

    Raised Garden Bed

No floor buddy, and just go to a timber yard and buy some heavy treated pine some lighter stuff for strutts and knock it up yourself or some corrogated iron for about a tenth of the price, it will be a much larger deeper, Heavier and longer lasting gig.
