I was given a cutting from some sort of monstrose cacti for my Birthday and it has taken root recently so I thought I would find out what it really is??. The mother plant was reported to be almost 2 metres tall. I am assuming it is a type of Cereus. Does anyone have an idea on the correct scientific name though? sorry bout photos was losing light quickly when I took them.

not that I am an expert on grafting but little seedlings like that would probably go best on peres...from my reading not from personal experience.

Unknown cacti from the markets this morning.
Stillman replied to Stillman's question in Cactus & Succulent Identification
Do you think the first one could be a Cleistocactus species? -
the cutting is putting on some good growth
-
So how is it not a peruvianus? What I mean is what should I look for to key these cacti? Does anyone know a good link to IDing Monstrose? I will have to chase down a pic of the adult plant. Its a very vigorous species what ever it is. Its loving the South East QLD Weather at the moment.

KInd of square, its setting the odd seed so I will grow it out and see if it produces a purple flower at least then I will know if its stable cross, Var,.

I am trying out some growlush red and blue LED lights for my peres grafts and bits and peices has anyone much experience with LED? http://www.growlush.com/GROWLUSH%20LED%20INSTRUCTIONS.pdf I'm in QLD so I like the fact they don't put out any heat and they apparently are excellent for all growth?
-
dood didi it say how many lumens it was supposed to put out? I have been doing some reading and most feed back is quite negative on the LED, which makes me worried but I think for my purposes I hope it has enough balls.

EG I certainly don't need any more heat or humidity its been about 28 degs and 80% humitity for the last week.. and only going to get hotter.
-
Thats how I have it set up at present, Once I have a few days off I will set it up differently, I still have the 60 Watt CFL blasting away as now I am a bit Paranoid of what little out put these leds might have. Mick

I new the distance thing was wrong.. So heres one last nooby question. I want to put my grafts in a fish tank with a glass lid. Someone told me that the led lights won't work as well if there is a glass lid between it and the plant is that true or a bunch of BS as well?

I just lost my big post damn it, I hate it when that happens. Thanks for the advice EG I was worried because the Wattage wasn't there. They also say it works best at about 1 to 2 metres above plant?? That doesn't seem to make sense to me. Anyway I was gifted it so I will do some experiments if they are real crappy I will definately post up and tell everyone not to bother trying them out.

keen on a cheap option Eatfoo, Once I set it up I will take some pics, I think it will be great for cacti. I got this through a friend but he got it through Ozponics on Ebay.

So I was fortunate enough to receive some peres cuttings from a forum member and have struck a a few and this morning I decided to have a go grafting. I am not confident enough to use any seedlings of value at this stage so I used some generic Lobivia and echinopsis pups. What amazed me was how well they stuck to the peres, was magic, I did a bit of reading and I think I have followed most advice to the letter, perhaps some of the scions are a bit too big but I figure I have to give it a go at some point so might as well be now... heres some pics of the adult plants that the pups came off. and the grafts I had a few plants with two new shoots each so I had a double graft of both, I think the Lobivia look a little better but time will tell I have put them in a fish tank inside with artificial light but the humidity is pretty evil here already so hopefully I won't see any scion shrinkage. I know the scion species is a bit common but both produce beautiful flowers and I think will produce offsets and look pretty cool if they take.

my first attempt at Pereskiopsis grafting
Stillman replied to Stillman's topic in Cacti & Succulents
The Lobivia failed (found them pushed off, perhaps the peres was too well watered?) but the Echinopsis is still hanging in there. I did a couple more too but will ahve to see. I figure if I keep doing a heap of grafts eventually the will start to taek as my odds get better hahahhah. -
cheers for clearing that up hahahahaha do you have a pic of a specimen I'm having trouble finding one of a monstrose.

my first attempt at Pereskiopsis grafting
Stillman replied to Stillman's topic in Cacti & Succulents
I just hope that the scions take. -
So any ideas? I know its probably very common but I know nothing about them so would like someones opinion. My guess Cereus peruvianus does anyone agree. I repotted it and it already has an excellent root ball and some green in the growing tip I received the cutting in late October..so will look cool in a few years I recon.

Once I collect some seeds I would be interested in trading etc. for sure they are pretty garden plants regardless of wether they are active.
-
Not to beat a dead horse but I am growing some coleus I have a few types but one interests me a plain green variegated type, I also have some sort of Hybrid Salvia most probably a splendens of sort which from my own experience has some active qualities certainly the flowers do. I'm considering making a blend of sorts to smoke from the two with some mexican tarragon thrown in for good measure. My green coleus Purple/blue Salvia unknown

have realised it is illegal to grow in Australia my bad.

it is really course and prickly but tastes like coriander and very pungent, I have seen it at bunnings labelled perennial coriander. Personally I prefer real Coriander but it is good to have if you can't get the real stuff.

Hi again I am not trying to stir up anything but I just read this article http://www.gaia-health.com/articles401/000407-australia-ban-common-garden-plants.shtml it state that it is legal to grow opium poppies as long as it is 100 plants or less and I am assuming you are not actively milking the pods. I'm not sure if this is true but I will look into it out of interest. after doing further research the above link seems full of many misinformations as planthelper stated below please disregard.
