Juul's Giant x Huarazensis, Variegated(?)

I'm loving what I'm seeing. Over two years old though... talk about a slow grower. Its grafting time.

Yeah it was grown in Bulgaria where the sun isn't very intense and the seasons must be very short.

Hopefully it will pick back up next season now that it's in a more favorable climate.

Someone told me it is not variegated but could be just sun bleached. Time will tell I guess.

It looks exactly like some of the variegation I have in many of my seedlings and I have them growing right next to very dark green specimens so its not the light. At least not with my specimens and I'd bet not with yours either.  There are many shades of variegation as well as many types patterns of variegation. The bright yellow patches, splotches, or specimens clearly halved are some types of variegation. You can also have a bring green layer just under a rich yellow layer so the only way to see the green is to cut horizontally through the specimen. Your cacti has what appears to be a light green and a dark green variegation which I personally love. A sport from the light green area could still grow fine and could simply be 100% light green. A sport/pup from the darker green area could retain that darker green color. And a sport/pup with both light and dark green could have different proportions of darker green to light green.  Time will tell if yours is variegated for sure or not, but I'd be willing to trade a pup from this one for a pup when it yours has one. 

Thanks a lot for the input Inyan, that variegate you posted is gorgeous. I sure hope you're right about mine, and I'm definitely more inclined to believe you than the other guy.

What also makes me think he's wrong is I doubt a tricho could get bleached by the sun in Bulgaria.

i think what he means is that there was a lack of sun on the side that is lighter and thus it appears falsely variegated which is a possibility, but it looks very strongly like some of my other specimens with that type of variegation. What makes me lean away from that is the few patches of darker green interspersed on the same side as the light green. You can also see some light green patches in the darker green side. If I'm wrong I'll still trade you pup for a pup. That is how sure I am that this is variegated, but as pappy always said... never be willing to gamble with something your not willing to lose on. I wish you much luck with this beautiful specimen.

Okay.. let me append some clarity..

The juuls x huaraz seedling you've received is not variegated .. the sun-bleached theory is correct

It was grown along with 30 other seedlings in a tray exposed to a southern sun, which can be intense .

Should grow very well potted on its own.

So what your saying @mysubtleascention is that all 30 seedlings in that tray looked like this? I grow my seedlings in full sun from the moment they sprout onwards. They start out purple red when the sun is very intense and gradually green up within a few days of being grafted. Interesting indeed, thanks for sharing with us.

I'm saying I'm growing trichocereus the way I like it..
