I was going to post about this shortly! Got a few pieces myself I want to do in log style.. Looks good!

Do you have to cover the ends completely or will the roots push straight down? (if you know :) :)

You dont need to cover the ends :) . I have had logs send roots down mid section whilst sitting on a wooden bench, lol.

I was thinking of doing some Cereus like this but wanted to use something other than perlite because that shit blows around in the wind like crazy. I wish pumice was easier to come by here...but maybe I'll just use some coarse sand or something. Or potting mix...wouldn't that be old fashioned lol

I use river sand and potting mix or cactus mix mixed together. Ratio not crucial. I am pretty rough and ready though hey, lol.

I use dirt from my garden, mixed with about 50% volume of seedling mix and some perlite, rough but also works well.

You guys don't find you have any problems with rot laying a log down in organic mediums? Do you water them at all?

I havent had rot problems, and i do water the laying logs. Just need good drainage i guess. I just lay the logs on soil, and dont submerge any of it. Cactus are pretty hardy hey :)
