zelly Posted August 14, 2014 Huntington Members at the Upper Levels (Contributor, Affiliate, Supporting, Patron, Benefactor), and Society of Fellows are cordially invited to our final 2014 Members' Summer Evening on Saturday, August 16, from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. Bring a blanket or chairs, family and wine, and picnic in a designated area. Music begins at 6:30 p.m. As a surprise bonus, one of our "Stinky Plants", the Amorphophallus titanum (a.k.a., Titan Arum or Corpse Flower), is preparing to bloom, and is currently on display in the Rose Hills Foundation Conservatory for Botanical Science. It has been relocated just inside the Conservatory entrance for ease of viewing. August 16 (Saturday) Music 6:30 p.m. Silver Mountain Strings Quintet - American fiddle and bluegrass music This Saturday, the Silver Mountain Strings Quintet will offer a lively presentation of Appalachian traditions with popular jazz elements. Its renditions of "new grass," a style that incorporates punk rock, assures a thigh-slapping, toe-tapping experience. Be sure to stop by the Rose Hills Foundation Conservatory for Botanical Science to see the progress of the Stinky Plant (Amorphophallus titanum). Currently a robust 39 inches tall, the Titan Arum can reach six feet in height. As rare in bloom as it is spectactular, it can go years without flowering; the last bloom at The Huntington was in 2010. However, it is most famous for its exceptionally foul odor, which prompted the nicknames "Corpse Flower" and "Stinky Plant." Special evening hours will be available for Members when the Stinky Plant comes into bloom. Check the Huntington website for updates.
zed240 Posted August 15, 2014 The corpse flower in Melbourne flowered for the first time last year. Video link below. Bit of a time lapse in the vid and it shows the flower pretty well.
