fuck this shit. their "you must pay tax on all of it" is bad enough, and the thing where the incoming traveller card says "1000ml (or whatever it is) of alcohol", NOT "alcoholic beverages", yet they treat it as such on arrival. fuck australian import laws suck arse. my word.

but don't worry dear sabbers, i know the perfect way to bring in as much alc and tabak as you want. just bring a knife. THE END not really, what you do is have a weapon in your CHECKED (obviously) luggage, which customs automatically focus on as a big deal. you declare this on your incoming passenger card. you also get to skip the queue and go straight to the blueglovesman/woman. s/he then looks at your weapon, hopefully it's a legal one (swords and crossbows are now illegal in victoria unless you jump through very very large hoops), then you're free to go! they don't even xray your bag. it's incredibly dumb on their part, but it works, i have done it four times, every time with excessive amounts of alcohol and tobacco. not saying it's guaranteed, but it works for me. and i'm a dodgy looking dude! i get the bomb test every single time. so yeah.

Yep, I've thought very seriously about this. I've even talked to my girlfriend about this and we have both suggested scandinavian countries as possible new homes, though I would want to do a lot of research before choosing a new home. Australia is definitely the worst western country when it comes to drug prohibition. The most promising at the moment seems to be America, not so much because of their current laws, but because of the rate at which they seem to be moving towards a better position on drug legislation, which is very strange, but there are plenty of reasons why I wouldn't want to move to America.

EDIT: lol, thought I was posting in a different thread, but the point still stands.

what i dont get about the latter, is if all you want is money and a car and a house and expensive booze, why dont the rich people move to shit countries and be ULTRA rich there, without doing any work! it's madness.

You've gotta be joking 7baz. I mean, there's corruption in every country and every system, and rich people definitely have it pretty easy here. But I'm sure it is moreso in many African countries and some places in South America, basically any autocracy.

I think the truth is that they have the best of both worlds in most Western cultures. Much as rich people can be ultra rich by living in a poor country, they also probably don't like to actually live in those countries. Most of them pay very little tax comparatively in countries like Australia, and while people might complain about some of the socialistic policies of these countries, such as good public health care, they also enjoy the benefits, such as living in a country where you don't have to travel through slums to get from A to B, or deal with loads and loads of beggars when in highly populated areas, or have to content with the spread of disease due to poverty. I think if you're rich, you are best off living in a wealthy country where you can really make the most of your wealth while not being impacted by the poverty of the majority.

Duty free smokes. I found out about this the hard way. Doesnt bother me too much because I dont smoke so the decision was simple- declare them and then bin the other 8 packets out of the carton. In Indo its only $10 a carton or so anyway so its still cheaper. The guy I was travelling with decided to pay the duty and he reckoned it still worked out to be around 50% of the price he would pay in Aus. Good point about the declaring as much stuff as you can to avoid searching- I wouldnt want to bet my life or freedom on it though. I have had the same experience a couple of times where they just have enough of looking at all your declared goods and send you through but have also been sent to the xray before too.
