Heya,

MAITAKE mushroom pics are supplied below...

I am interested if any Australian mushrooms look like these (ie. is there an Aussie counterpart or related species). I would also like to get a MAITAKE mushroom for home use. Do you know these mushrooms or better yet - have you grown any in Australia - or know of how I can get one (I live in Lismore, Northern NSW)?

Additionally, tell me what you think about these beings - do you like them, know them, have u eaten them, are they attractive to you???

Research has been been done on Maitake (Grifola frondosa) in Tasmania with an aim for commercial production.

No commercial product is available yet to the best of my knowledge, and while i have been keeping my ears to the ground on this one, i have been pre-occupied with other stuff for the last little while.

Im not sure if there are cultures available in the community.

Cheers, Obtuse.

yup cultures are definitely available here in Oz.
grain masters are colonising as we speak!

Also found a native grifola in Victoria this fall, didn't risk eating it tho.

I'm pretty keen to cultivate it for high end restaurants but I don't think the shelf life will be good enough for farmers markets...

I've seen sexier specimens.
But a chooks comb is pretty rad whatever the situation.

They feel uncontrived. Simple.
helpful. I've read that shitake, maitake and reishi are sometimes grouped together because of their awesomeness(es).

If they're even close to least of Reishi, they can still be powerful teachers and healers.

Seem easy to grow on logs this one.
Take to dowels pretty well & the couple of logs I started are just bearing fruit. Been 2 months since innoculated, temps are mid teens day to low at night....
Presently coming up on liquid amber (sweetgum) & native young figs.
Have to check but might still have some dowels about.

The Australian varieties, there are 2 Grifola natives, they are both edible but too bitter to be palatable. So don't bother.
