mutant Posted June 24, 2012 Hey I thought we put all stuff on gymno calicium in here there is some discussion in the following links http://www.shaman-australis.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=29996&st=300 So How about some photos? G.baldianum I regarded this a hybrid [seed was gifted from a friend, couple years ago] but now I see this really looks like G. gibbosum var. platensis this specimen above is a degrafted and rooted specimen also check a still grafted biggy speciman ... next to a grafted coryphantha elaphadidens.

Stillman Posted June 25, 2012 (edited) From you Zelly, that is indeed a complement. Put some pics up man, and after our season I might be able to trade some seed with you if your keen? Edited June 25, 2012 by Stillman
r2pi Posted June 25, 2012 Lovely pics - I used to love my Gymnos but had to leave them behind when crossing international borders. You've inspired me to get some more!
GoOnThen Posted June 28, 2012 (edited) Nice plants Mutant. Stillman you really do like these dont you no wonder I am having trouble buying any nice plants you have got them all Come on Zelly post your pics I have trouble believing that you have a single cacti that you should be ashamed of. I have been sussing out Gymnos for a little while now and after a bit of hunting around I received my first ones in the mail yesterday. They are only a couple of little Baldianum and a Mihanovichii crest but this is only the beginning I also have a grafted Bruchii on its way and a long list of plants which I am about to order. Should I be planting them in any special mix ? I have just put them in a low organic mix much like I have my loph's in Cheers Got Edited June 28, 2012 by GoOnThen
Stillman Posted June 28, 2012 (edited) i keep them in fast draining soil. As hot as you can and water them with fert regularly they flower and grow pretty quick in my experience. edit. Lots of humidity seems to be the go. And seriously water them when its hot. I read when they found the first G mihanovichii it was in a swamp under a metre of water lol. True story. GoOnThen Posted July 1, 2012 Cool thanks mate Here is the pics of my first couple that I have got so far. Love the flowers on Gymnos cant wait for my first one Cheers Got
zelly Posted July 1, 2012 pics of some of my gymno's Here's one I dont know the name of, maybe somebody else does... (might be an erinaceum) a variegated anistii a baldianum that's trying to go crested a pretty stenopleurum (looks somewhat like a mihanovichii but they have green or yellow flowers) an obductum a quehlianum in a 13 cm pot & some spider mite damage and one that's either a horstii or a buenekeri, depending on how rare you want to make it The main head is kinda wrinkly cuz the plant is in a 15 cm pot that hangs in the rafters of my gh & rarely gets watered. When I remember it gets plump & when I forget it gets wrinkly.
Stillman Posted July 1, 2012 Nice GOT love the crest and those little blokes will grow fast over summer. Zelly that quehlianum is looking great. And A q for you how do you tell horsti and buenekeri apart? ANd did yours produce offsets or did you grow out some seedlings in the one pot? O really like the horsti and buenekeri have a few myself that with out a name tag I struggle to separate lol.
zelly Posted July 1, 2012 Well supposedly there's G. horsti and G. horsti var buenekeri, the var buenekeri supposedly has 3x longer spines & rougher skin. Mine seems to pup like mad, all the plants in the one pot are from the main head.
GoOnThen Posted July 2, 2012 Thanks for posting the pic's Zelly I new your plants wouldn't disappoint. The horstii and the quehlianum are very cool and you yet again produce a variegated plant. Cheers Got

GoOnThen Posted July 2, 2012 Yep he is the man. Most of the recent plants that I have posted have come from him and there are still more to come. He definitely has some nice plants but having to buy of ebay is a bit of a pain in the arse but over here I don't have a lot of choice. Cheers Got

Jox Posted August 16, 2012 This looks like the place to ask , I have just received some Gymno denudatum seeds & was wondering if there any secrets with gymno germ? Cheers jox
Stillman Posted August 16, 2012 (edited) no secret, I use takeaway tech get them going and forget about them. I'm growing a few different Gymnos out they are generally pretty tough, some seem painfully slow in the first 6 months. I just put them out the back and check them every month or so. GoOnThen Posted August 17, 2012 Seem as this thread has made it back to the first page ( thanks Jox ) I thought I would post pics of my first buds. Both are supposed to be Gymnocalycium Bruchii the first one is grafted and the other is on its own roots. Cheers Got
Stillman Posted August 17, 2012 nice man I can't wait for flowers this year.
mutant Posted August 21, 2012 (edited) down right : michanovski or whatever the name is , down left : baldianum up: gibbosum [hybrid?] from seed [degrafted and rooted] I saved this from severe dehydration among various random cacti. I know the name, theoretically, just not now! According to previous reading and experience, its of the species that are sensitive to overwatering. since I got it , it pumped and changed from the initial dehydrated flattened form. say, it looks like zelly's obductum, and I think it might be in the same family of more sensitive gymnos. now what would this be? I got several of them for my cacti / greenhouse / etc project... flower is pinkish the grafted gibbosum hybrid is starting to get seriously 'wrong' shape Edited August 21, 2012 by mutant
Stillman Posted August 21, 2012 That unknown one looks like Gymnocalycium ragonesei beautiful white silky flower.
