Barnard Posted April 18, 2012 Hello all, just wondering if someone can make it clear on the legal status of growing Papaver somniferum. Ive read a few different reports thats all. I am only talking about growing these in your own backyard, but yes even if the variety does contain opiates. The seeds seem to be easily avaliable with SAB selling lots of varietys. Cheers. Alice Posted April 18, 2012 Illegal to cultivate in Australia (unless authorised, e.g. poppy fields of TAS). However seeds are legal, and common (e.g. poppy seed buns). The police may turn a blind eye to the old granny down the lane growing some poppies in her cottage garden, but they certainly are not obliged to. Enjoy that poppy seed taste, just don't try to sprout them.
phreakah Posted April 18, 2012 I would suggest just not to plant a whole patch of them - scatter them around. That makes it look far more ornamental
