I'm definitely not comfortable with being monitored by these big companies like Google and hotmail, facebook whatever. I need to construct a new, more anonymous online presence. I'm not even on facebook actually but may start a new account for work related things.

I'd like to start with a whole new email account that is not linked to any of the big guys. I know they probably all do a bit of personalised advertising etc. but I just want to wipe the slate a bit and have more control over my personal information and online history.

Maybe just a practice run so I can do it again every couple years and et better at it each time.

So yeah, who could I open a new email account with? Any suggestions?

I've seen this place, http://www.ausi.com havnt got an account with them but they don't seem to be associated with any of the big guys.

You could buy/rent a domain and your own webspace that comes with an email account.
It's an expensive email account... but you'd have complete peace of mind.

From a privacy perspective, consider also whether there is header data embedded in your emails. One god thing about Gmail is that they are stripped when sending (though there are ways & means, through tools created by 419 eaters but that's another story)

The most secure way would be to setup your own (assuming you know what you're doing)
The second most secure would be to use a paid service like https://neomailbox.net/. It comes highly recommended from many of my 'friends'.

If you want to see if the header data is stripped, send me an email form your new hushmail account and I will analyse it (Im also interested to know) to see just how much your privacy is protected

note that hushmail still records the IP address you are logging in from, as is required by law.
