myco Posted October 24, 2011 hey all just wanted to post this up for everybody this is my first ever attempt at grafting anything and geez wat a mission haha after making this whole lil contraption with hooks in wood and a lil pouch to hold the loph on there like the urban tribes guys video on youtube (wich im sure alot of you have seen) it did not work at all the lil guy shot off probly atleast 5 times so in the end i went with just one lacky band straight under the pot and over the loph if anyone has any advice let me know and please everybody pray to the cactus gods for me haha im really worried about this lil guy i hope i dont kill him i'd be devestated heres a couple of pics 2 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
Bongchitis Posted October 24, 2011 (edited) Nothing wrong with that mate! Just pop a plastic bag over the top and tape the base of the bag to seal it up as a humidity chamber of sorts then chuck it in the shade for 2 weeks. I usually use a piece of stocking and hook it onto the spines whilst stretched over the graft. Make sure you update the thread to let us know how it goes. I would mist the inside of the bag then seal and leave for 2 weeks. If you see any funky shit going on remove the bag for a bit. Drying out is the scurge of a graft. myco Posted October 25, 2011 has anyone else got anything to on humidity??? im pretty sure i remember reading a thread not to long ago where someone was saying that thier grafts never work and everyone said humidity is key to getting them to stick at the same time you would think humidity wouldnt be good mould wise so for now i've left the bag on there its still fairly moist and humid in there but i did end up cuting a hole in the side of the bag so it doesnt get to humid in there and has some air exchange Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
myco Posted October 29, 2011 so as i didnt get much help here other than 2 people ttelling me the oposite things hahha no offence guys im sure different things work for different people anyway i thought i'd update the progress DAY - 1 (24 - 10 - 2011) i did the graft late in the afternoon placed a bag over it for humidity DAY - 2 (25 - 10 - 2011) woke up the next day and decided to cut a small hole in the bag for some air exchange and also so i could actually see the graft to be sure it looked ok it looked fine pretty much the same as the day before when i grafted it DAY - 3 (26 - 10 - 2011) i woke up and checked the lil guy out to find some pretty bad browning happening all over the wounds so i immediately took the bag off and began to stress haha late that afternoon i got some sulphur and decided to cover its wounds DAY - 4 (27 - 10 - 2011) it was looking much better the browning seemed to have stopped in its tracks DAY - 5 (28 - 10 - 2011) i left it alone and let the sulphur do its thing it seemed to heal up quite nicely and very quickly to DAY - 6 (29 - 10 - 2011) i have noticed some fresh green in the ribs of the loph wich to me is a good sign that the graft has taken i have also given it a gentle squeeze and it hasnt softened at all so im very hopeful that my first attempt at grafting may be successful :D i will add some pics tommorrow right now its to late and well i just cant be fucked haha Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
Philocacti Posted October 29, 2011 Sorry if I'm late. I live in a very dry climate so usually I put a bag on top of columnar grafts (without misting it). But I only do so so that the surface of the stock doesn't sink that much in the process of drying. Usually I pinch a few small hiolew 4 days after the graft was done and I increase the holes as the days pass. I usually remove the bag before 2 weeks have passed. Hope that helps. BUT put in mind I live in VERY dry climate, so I don't know the trick if you live in a humid climate. 1 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
nitrogen Posted October 29, 2011 Sounds like humidity is good, but so is air flow, to prevent rot and such.. So maybe wrap it in the t-shirt material as described above, but keep the t-shirt material moist with a sprayer/spritzer? That way there will be humidity in the form of water evaporating from the t-shirt, but also good air-flow since the t-shirt is permeable.. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

myco Posted October 30, 2011 so heres the pics guys i think these were from day - 4 the day after i covered its wounds with sulphur you can see how it was starting to brown wich was my reason for covering it with sulphur these are from day 6 you can just see the fresh green growth in between the ribs of the loph wich i figure is a good sign it has taken or atleast the loph is still in good health Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
myco Posted November 4, 2011 so its coming up to 2 weeks now since i did the graft on monday it will have been 2 weeks yesterday i brushed off all the excess sulphur and its wounds have healed very nicely the graft in my opinion has taken the loph hasnt shrunk in size at all if anything it may have gotten slightly larger its still very solid and hasnt softened at all my question is though even if the graft seems to have stuck is there still a chance that over the next few weeks to a month it could reject it somehow or does this just not really happen i was also wondering how long i should wait till i give it some water here's a quick pic i just took today its a little blurry but you can see how its looking at the moment Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

myco Posted December 9, 2011 so its been just over a month now since i grafted this guy and he's going great very happy with how this went its wounds have healed nicely and its showing some great growth it looks kinda bad with the browning but its definately fine at this point and the rot is not getting any worse or spreading its slowly disapearing i also replanted the bottom and it has a small bulge on the side wich has been slowly getting bigger and bigger especially in the last few weeks so im pretty sure its gonna throw a pup out wich is another plus i think the flash made it look worse than it is haha the browning doesnt look this bad when i look at it right here in front of me 1 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
