Omphalotus nidiformis - the ghost fungus

Recommended Posts

Found some Omphalotus nidiformis fruiting today. Went back after dark to see them glowing, but unfortunately couldn't get photos of them as my camera doesn't allow for untimed exposures.

No, they are poisonous and will cause severe vomiting if eaten. They are however bioluminescent, meaning they glow in the dark.

Found growing out of the base of a Eucalyptus, by the side of the road, near dry sclerophyll bush. They fruit around here in Autumn, but this is the first time I've knowingly found them (I found another bioluminescent mushroom cluster at night time on the coast a couple of hours drive from here several years ago, but didn't know what they were at the time. In hind sight, they were almost certainly O. nidiformis).

Thats cool. We've had that fungi popping up all over the place around here, just outside of ballarat. Never knew they glowed though, I'll have to go check it out tonight. They grow at the base of live manna gums, from what I've seen.

Has anyone any experience cultivating them?

They are seriously cool beauties B)

I've just cloned a few of the fruitbodies to agar, so providing I get a clean culture from them, don't bother buying them from Sporeworks. I'll share the culture if anyone wants it.

I would be really keen to share some of this culture with some others (and keep some for myself!). After reading this post I picked up some sterile Nutrient Agar plates and some SAB plates to culture it. How would I go about grabbing some when they are ready? I am happy to trade for some other interesting fungi, such as some of the Phallacaea order if you are keen.

Once tripping balls and walking in a very dark area of bushland in the middle of suburbia I did stop to revere a similar specimen.

Just PM me. The plates are coming along nicely, but I'll need to do another transfer or two before I can send any off.

Hey trip, I know this is an old thread but do you still have this mush on culture or as a print maybe?
