tripsis Posted May 9, 2010 Found some Omphalotus nidiformis fruiting today. Went back after dark to see them glowing, but unfortunately couldn't get photos of them as my camera doesn't allow for untimed exposures. Some other shots from today. Not sure of the species. incognito Posted May 9, 2010 are they edible? look like oysters!
tripsis Posted May 9, 2010 No, they are poisonous and will cause severe vomiting if eaten. They are however bioluminescent, meaning they glow in the dark.
thomsonnn Posted May 9, 2010 awesome, um gondwana's pretty broad haha, what kind of environment did u find them in? some nice pics also...
tripsis Posted May 9, 2010 Found growing out of the base of a Eucalyptus, by the side of the road, near dry sclerophyll bush. They fruit around here in Autumn, but this is the first time I've knowingly found them (I found another bioluminescent mushroom cluster at night time on the coast a couple of hours drive from here several years ago, but didn't know what they were at the time. In hind sight, they were almost certainly O. nidiformis).
SunChaser Posted May 9, 2010 Thats cool. We've had that fungi popping up all over the place around here, just outside of ballarat. Never knew they glowed though, I'll have to go check it out tonight. They grow at the base of live manna gums, from what I've seen.
shortly Posted May 10, 2010 Has anyone any experience cultivating them? They are seriously cool beauties

naja naja Posted May 10, 2010 (edited) Sporeworks has them avail. Original Spores supplied by a Westrailian sab member. http://sporeworks.com/store/catalog/Omphalotus-nidiformis--Ghost-Fungus-p-16365.html Edited May 10, 2010 by naja naja
tripsis Posted May 10, 2010 I've just cloned a few of the fruitbodies to agar, so providing I get a clean culture from them, don't bother buying them from Sporeworks. I'll share the culture if anyone wants it.
domeboy Posted May 14, 2010 I've just cloned a few of the fruitbodies to agar, so providing I get a clean culture from them, don't bother buying them from Sporeworks. I'll share the culture if anyone wants it. I would be really keen to share some of this culture with some others (and keep some for myself!). After reading this post I picked up some sterile Nutrient Agar plates and some SAB plates to culture it. How would I go about grabbing some when they are ready? I am happy to trade for some other interesting fungi, such as some of the Phallacaea order if you are keen.
Zen Peddler Posted May 14, 2010 Once tripping balls and walking in a very dark area of bushland in the middle of suburbia I did stop to revere a similar specimen.
tripsis Posted May 20, 2010 How would I go about grabbing some when they are ready? Just PM me. The plates are coming along nicely, but I'll need to do another transfer or two before I can send any off.
